By Train Local trains operated by London Midland run from Birmingham New Street to University station, a 10-minute walk from the Barber. Check train times and buy tickets at www.thetrainline.com By Bus Regular services stop at various locations at the edge of the University campus. Buses 61 and 63 from the city centre stop on the Bristol Road at its junction with Edgbaston Park Road. For all services and a current timetable, visit www.nxbus.co.uk/west-midlands. By Car North East Car Park (off Pritchatts Road) is a five minute walk away. Charges apply Monday – Friday, 9.30 am – 4.30pm. FREE parking is available on campus all day on weekends and bank holidays. ACCESS/FACILITIES Level access is available if you cannot manage the stairs at the main entrance, but please phone in advance to make arrangements. Gallery shop, light refreshments, WC, lift and baby-changing facilities are available. Breast-feeding is welcome throughout the building.

Come along to the Barber for a day of family fun, and be inspired to get drawing! This year The Big Draw theme is Every Picture Tells a Story... so join us as we delve into the magical world of Children’s book illustration. Join renowned author & illustrator James Mayhew and internationally acclaimed Russian pianist Alexander Aradov in a Live Paint along to Mussorgsky’s ‘Pictures at an Exhibition’

Turn Jan Steen’s dramatic depiction of King Ahasuerus and Esther into a 3D theatre!

Learn paper folding techniques and create your very diorama, inspired by Jan Steen’s The Wrath of Ahasuerus.

Large Layered Landscapes

Create a large oil pastel picture inspired by Frank Auerbach’s landscape. Learn how to layer and blend oil pastels to create dramatic effects.

Experiment with colour to create an atmospheric and textured oil pastel landscape. Build up layers to show light and shadow.

Extravagant Embossing

Try embossing - drawing raised marks into foil sheets to create pictures.

Use embossing foil and tools to create detailed designs, inspired by our striking Portuguese 16th century dish.

Experiment with pastels, gouache paint and sepia paper to make your own portrait, inspired by our Terms of Engagement exhibition.

Learn how to use pencil, pastels and body colour paint on sepia paper to create a portrait drawing.

Create your own Barber inspired mono-print. Finish it off by adding a mixed-media collage.

Learn about mono-printing techniques. Create a print of a Barber painting, adding collage to create a mixed-media piece.

Using really thick paint and palette knives, create a textured night-time painting inspired by Frank Auerbach.

Learn impasto painting techniques, building up thick layers of paint with palette knives to create texture, atmosphere and contrasting colours.

Explore the dogs in our paintings and make a clay sculpture of your favourite pooch!

Learn why dogs appear in portraits, and model a canine sculpture with porcelain clay.

Create your own magical, colourful self-portrait inspired by Jennifer Mc Rae’s work.

Study Jennifer McRae’s 2013 University portrait. Then create a surreal self-portrait using watercolour techniques.

Make a seasonal ornaments using willow sticks and crafty decorations.

Learn to weave willow sticks into 3D shapes and add crafty decorations for Christmas.

CHRISTMAS CRAFT FAIR SATURDAY 21 NOVEMBER 11-4pm Our popular Christmas Craft fair will be returning for another year. So join us for shopping and a drop-in craft session. Decorate a festive puppet or gift bag using felt, sequins, stickers, and fabric crayons. Keep it for yourself or give it as a gift! Drop in anytime. All ages welcome.
