Binchois Consort: The Battle of Agincourt

Miki Takahashi baroque violin Nicholas Stringfellow baroque cello Christine Whiffen harpsichord

Andrew Kirkman director James Hall, Tim Travers-Brown alto Will Balkwill, Dominic Bland, Tom Raskin, George Pooley tenor Featuring Birmingham University Singers

The Binchois Consort mark the 600th anniversary of the Battle of Agincourt (25th October, 1415), one of England’s greatest military victories. The programme also focuses on its victor, Henry V. Great warrior though he was, Henry – typically for his time – was also a major patron of the arts, and a contemplative and devout figure seeking the support and patronage of favoured saints. He was even a skilled composer, two of whose works have survived. The programme presents both sides of Henry: the redoubtable military and political figure celebrated in the famous Agincourt carol, in great state motets, and in chants and acclamations composed directly for Lancastrian coronations; and the man of piety revealed in his own music for the Mass, and in the polyphonic Mass and rhymed office chants for St John of Bridlington. Like early fifteenthcentury life itself, the music of Henry’s time is colourful and surprisingly varied: a world of energy, rhythm, drive and brilliance. The inspiration behind quartet-lab is a mutual desire to experience the wealth of string quartet and chamber repertoire through performance. In September 2013, the quartet made its Wigmore Hall debut as part of a unanimously acclaimed tour, eliciting five-star reviews from the national press. Other appearances on the tour included Konzerthaus (Berlin), Beethovenfest (Bonn), Brussels’ KlaraFestival, Philharmonie Haarlem and Muziekgebouw Eindhoven. Combining a shared passion for experimentation, the quartet has moved away from preconceived impressions of the standard repertoire, and programmes are instead created around musical

texture, context and colour. Familiar repertoire is positioned alongside contemporary works and interspersed with unannounced chamber works. Such unusual programming has become the quartet’s trademark, setting the group apart and making it one of today’s most interesting ensembles.
