How to Book Getting Here
hello hello T
he University of Birmingham’s Edgbaston campus looks at its best at this time of year – and we will be making the most of it this year with the first ever Birmingham Proms in Chancellor’s Court presented on 11 June (see page 10). We kick off the season with student lunchtime recitals and a packed BEAST:FEaST (28 – 30 April), whilst the Barber Concerts series continues for the first four weeks of the academic term. We also present the final Barber Evening Concert of the 70th Anniversary year with a performance from Barber favourites, the Academy of Ancient Music, with a celebratory programme directed by Richard Egarr. Once the students' exams and dissertation deadlines are out of the way there is one final blow out – the Summer Festival of Music – with twelve days of concerts and opera performances. In this eclectic student-

led festival you can hear from many of the ensembles that run year-round, plus three performances of Benjamin Britten’s The Beggar’s Opera, and you can join the Symphony Orchestra and guest singers for an evening of Proms favourites and fireworks at the Birmingham Proms performance. So, we are all set for a fantastic term of music at the University, and we hope that you (and the sunshine) can join us. Jo Sweet Head of University Music and Concerts

Electronic sound has the potential to cross over the boundary between the physical and the virtual. Field recordings can confront us with hyper-realistic soundscapes, transporting us to other places and times. Synthesis can draw us into the most abstract and impressionistic realms of the imaginary. Join us as we map this terrain between the Real and Unreal in BEAST:FEaST 2016, our annual festival of music and ideas. Featured artists include World Soundscape project director and granular synthesis pioneer Barry Truax, Mexican composer Sergio Luque, whose extended non-standard synthesis approaches have established him as the heir apparent to Xenakis' stochastic sound generation techniques, and BEAST founder / former director Jonty Harrison, who returns to bring us his latest extended opus based on field recordings from around the world. Also featuring music and performances by Carl Stone, Natasha Barrett, John Young, Hans Tutschku, Fernando Lopez-Lezcano, Leah Reid, Till Bovermann and many others.
