2018 ANNUAL REP ORT

OPPORTUNITY. COMMUNITY.

BARBERTON.

Barberton Community Foundation was established in 1996 as a 501(c)(3) and further designated as a 509(a)(3) supporting organization public charity to strengthen the community through the perpetual giving power of an endowment. In November of 1996, the citizens of Barberton overwhelmingly supported taking an original gift of $86 million in funds and securities from the sale of Barberton Citizens Hospital and establishing a permanent endowment. Interest earned from the fund would enable grants to be distributed in support of the Barberton community, city and schools over time. Since its inception, Barberton Community Foundation has awarded over 3,400 grants and scholarships totaling more than $82 million and invested over $22 million more to promote job creation, neighborhood improvements and educational opportunities within Barberton. The Foundation is a facilitator and leader of collaborative community action – building the capacity of its grantee organizations and the community to strengthen the economy, prepare the future workforce, and enhance quality of life for the residents of Barberton, now and forever.

STRENGTHENING OUR COMMUNITY Thank you for reading the 2018 Annual Report. Enclosed you will see some of our accomplishments throughout the year. In this year’s report you will find many stories of the Foundation’s impact on Barberton. But these stories send a greater message: this is your foundation. From the Game Changers to the school employees’ charitable contribution program, everyone can be a part of the Foundation. When I was introduced as a new board member in 2010, I shared how volunteering with the Foundation gave me a unique opportunity to maximize my technical knowledge and experience to benefit the community. As my term limit expires and I reflect on past years, I find I am proud of our accomplishments and hopeful for the future of the Foundation. As a board, we have made progress on several key items to ensure the constancy of your foundation. Many of these items might appear small or inconsequential today but will provide the amplitude to accomplish the lofty goals our community has defined for itself and Barberton Community Foundation. We have retired all of the debt previously incurred for strategic investment projects into the community, specifically, the debt associated with the Lake Anna YMCA project and the Middle School. Through the vision of previous boards, both projects tangibly enhanced the landscape of our community. In planning now our strategies for forever, we educated our board and communicated to our stakeholders the importance of accurately modeling and prudently managing our spending policy. Additionally, through the 2018 strategic planning process, we have strengthened our alignment with community stakeholders on how the Foundation will engage some of the most challenging objectives facing our community, namely economic development and educational excellence. Lastly, we have been able to add very talented key staff to the organization. Your Foundation is primed to make larger and deeper impacts on the community in the future. Thank you for the opportunity to serve as a board member and board chair. As I depart, it is clear to me the opportunity to build a better Barberton lies in deepening our community partnerships. I wish our organization luck and invite you to meet with our team to learn how you, too, can partner. Best,

Michael A Chisnell Jr

GREETINGS! It is a pleasure and an honor to serve Barberton Community Foundation as its new executive director. With a proud history, the Foundation has been a cornerstone of the community for over 20 years and has strengthened so many aspects of life in Barberton.

Many people in Barberton have shared with me stories of the good work of the Foundation since its inception in 1996, and I’ve learned that Barberton Community Foundation has awarded over 3,400 grants and scholarships totaling more than $82 million and has invested over $22 million more to promoting job creation, neighborhood improvements and educational opportunities within Barberton. Others have told me of the Foundation’s beginnings and of its legacy – solid and lasting – created by people who cared about the future of their children and of their city. So many people in the community have been, and continue to be, involved in making sure the Foundation is a community champion and a leader of collaborative community action. Now Barberton Community Foundation has a new strategic plan and is poised to strengthen its position as a leader, foster collaboration, and create a stronger legacy of philanthropy. With the guidance of the Board of Directors, the Foundation will move strategically towards a more direct and impactful partnership with the City of Barberton and Barberton City Schools. We’ll also champion and support an engaged, vibrant, innovative, and healthy community—and I am delighted to be a part of that. What I found integral to the plan is our vision statement, which reads, “We envision an improved quality of life for Barberton residents now and forever.” To meet this vision, our mission statement reads: “Barberton Community Foundation will strengthen the Barberton community for current and future generations by providing leadership, fostering collaboration, and creating a legacy of giving to do good.” I hope you agree that the legacy of giving is vital as we grow the Foundation so that generations, now and in the future, can thrive and prosper. I look forward to hearing from our many donors about their hopes and wishes for Barberton and I also hope to hear more Barberton stories as I learn more about this wonderfully vibrant and proud community. Warm Regards,

Suzanne Allen, Ph.D Executive Director

GAME CHANGER AWARDS Game changer. We hear the phrase all the time. It means changing the course of events to a new direction. For nineteen years, Barberton Community Foundation has recognized people and organizations who have become game changers by making a difference. Elwood Palmer and the Lake Anna YMCA received the 2018 Game Changer awards. Elwood Palmer was recognized for his dedication as Barberton’s public service director from 1999-2014. He also represented the city’s Third Ward on Barberton City Council. Additionally, Elwood served as lieutenant governor for Ohio District Kiwanis. Magic City Kiwanis service projects include: high school senior luncheons, continuing support of Safety Town, pool maintenance at Camp Manatoc, bell ringing for the Salvation Army, and funding the O.C. Barber statue – among many more. It is people like Elwood Palmer who live the words of Coretta Scott King: “The greatness of a community is most accurately measured by the compassionate actions of its members.” Because of people like Elwood Palmer, Barberton is a great place to live. Lake Anna YMCA was selected because it is more than just a fitness center. Opened in 2007, it serves thousands from Barberton and beyond. The 57,000 square-foot facility features a six-lane competition swimming pool with a kids play area, large wellness center, basketball gym, multiple exercise rooms, the Barberton Community Center (Parks and Rec.), Active Adults Division, and the Anna Dean physical therapy and performance center, operated by Summa Barberton Hospital. The Lake Anna YMCA is a place where people of all ages have access to the programs and facilities that help nourish mind, spirit, and body – as the YMCA mission states. From swimming, weight lifting, and exercise machines to diabetes screenings, prayer breakfasts, and pajama parties, the YMCA is truly a community center...the healthy heartbeat of Barberton.

A SPECIAL KIND OF INFRASTRUCTURE People (Especially The Little Ones) Are the Best Community Investment Another way Barberton Community Foundation invests in the future of Barberton is by supporting the school district’s preschool program. According to the researchers who contributed to Duke University’s “The Current State of Scientific Knowledge on Pre-Kindergarten Effects,” preschool math and literacy skills better prepare Barberton students for the Ohio Kindergarten Readiness Assessment and later, the Third Grade Reading Guarantee mandate. Their research also points to greater gains from disadvantaged households, meaning children who have had early experiences of economic scarcity gain more from preschool programs than their more advantaged peers. The physical, social, and intellectual activities of preschool do more than just keep young children occupied and prepare them for tests. It builds brain power. We believe that brain power is just another kind of infrastructure because preschool benefits the entire community. How? By empowering our young neighbors with the advantages that can position them – and our community – to succeed and excel. During this critical period – ages three and four – children establish some of their most lingering strengths, such as a strong vocabulary, motor skills, physical fitness prowess and the ability to focus, listen, and show teamwork. Studies indicate that preschoolers who develop these critical skills are more likely to graduate from college. For Barberton Community Foundation, that’s a smart investment – not just in children – but in future leaders and good citizens of Barberton and beyond.

6

INVESTMENT IN EXPANSION Barberton Preschool launched in 2017 and is licensed by the Ohio Department of Education. The project was started because school administrators knew there was a need for more affordable preschool programming in the city. They turned to Barberton Community Foundation as an important partner and facilitator. Barberton Preschool is housed in the administration building for efficiency. However, it quickly became apparent the preschool was an added bonus for administration staff. It is common to see Superintendent Jeff Ramnytz and other staff take a break, go down the hall, and interact with the children. This personal engagement helps the young students as well, welcoming them to the school district and making them feel at home. Past Superintendent Patti Cleary said, “As a school employee, there is no better reminder of our mission than taking a break to watch the preschool kids in that program.”

Preschool Program requested the Foundation’s help. In 2018 Barberton Community Foundation was able to fund an additional two classrooms for the 2018-2019 school year. The program is expected to continue expanding to serve about 250 children. This program has proven to be a great success and we are confident that it is just the beginning of great results as more and more Barberton children attend Barberton Preschool. We look forward to their growth, year after year, as they build their character and intellect, preparing to become tomorrow’s leading citizens.

The Foundation granted funds in 2017 for many of the initial classroom amenities needed to engage young students – books, games, puzzles, paints, and toys. The rooms include an indoor playground, tricycles, and water tables. The program opened with two classrooms and serviced 60 typical and special education children. The program is popular and growing. During the first year of operations, 45 families were on a waiting list. Wanting to expand, the Barberton Schools

MISSION

VISION

GOALS

The mission of Barberton Community Foundation is to strengthen the Barberton community for current and future generations by providing leadership, fostering collaboration, and creating a legacy of giving to do good.

We envision an improved quality of life for Barberton residents, now and forever. We strive to fulfill our mission of supporting the City of Barberton, Barberton School District, and public health by serving as a catalyst and resource to effectively respond to community needs.

Barberton Community Foundation aspires to create a synergistic organization that includes government, school, and community stakeholders to advance Barberton’s economic development and education priorities for building a better Barberton. In addition, Barberton Community Foundation intends to leverage its unique position as a community leader to encourage individual donor, corporate, and public investment to fund opportunities for building a better Barberton.

8

LEADERSHIP AN INCREASE IN DISTRIBUTIONS

The 2018 story is all about leadership. Measured community leadership supported by a committed, hardworking board and staff, who managed the mission against the challenges and headwinds that face nonprofits. The Foundation distributed more than $3 million in 2018, an increase of over 5% from the previous year.

PRI INVESTMENTS INCREASE BY $600K

We invested $1.6 million in the PRI program* – increasing the Foundation’s commitment to economic development. This support helps bring new business and residential opportunities to our community, such as helping first time home buyers, and the June, 2019 opening of the Akron Rubber Development Lab’s Robinson Avenue Barberton campus. *Barberton Community Development Corporation Program PRI Loan Fund and the Neighborhood Conservation Services PRI Program (NCS PRI Program).

NEW FOOTBALL FIELD TURF A DONOR AND COMMUNITY INITIATIVE In 2018, the Barberton All-Sports Boosters partnered with Barberton City Schools and the Foundation with a goal of raising $775,000. An auction of sports memorabilia raised more than $72,000, three times more than was expected. The auction included pieces of Barberton sports history, a Tom Brady jersey, and one of LeBron James’ shoes. With a lead gift from the Tuscora Park and Wellness Foundation of $100,000, in addition to essential in-kind services from Barberton Tree Service, the effort has raised over $576,000 of the estimated $775,000 project. This remarkable outpouring of community support resulted in a new, durable football field turf at Barberton High School stadium. The updated sports facility makes Barberton competitive as a world-class facility, including as a playoff host site. Our carefully managed donor-designated funds also made six more community charitable events possible, including the annual Chicken Open, the Greynolds Memorial Classic Basketball Tournament, and the Salvation Army Labor Day Barbecue.
