Annual Report
2019
Welcome
A Year of Change
In this annual report of 2019, we are very proud to share
many examples that exemplify the strength and resilience of our organization, and how we continue to improve the quality of life for Barberton residents.
Greetings from the board and staff of Barberton Community Foundation. 2019 was a year of change – new staff joined Barberton Community Foundation and a number of internal changes occurred, but our mission and vision never wavered. We remain committed to our fundamental purpose – to partner with our community stakeholders, our donors, and local nonprofits to improve the quality of life for Barberton residents by maximizing the strategic impact of charitable contributions. We are dedicated to: • Improving the quality of life for Barberton residents • Focused grantmaking on our community’s greatest needs • Connecting charitably-minded individuals to local needs • Managing and investing a variety of funds that individuals, families and organizations have established • Protecting and growing the giving power of the original endowment
Since 1996, with an initial investment of $86,000,000, your Foundation has made over $100,000,000 in grants to local nonprofits to benefit the residents of Barberton, as well as over $4,400,000 in scholarships. Our Program Related Investment (PRI) Program has disbursed over $11,600,000 million to local businesses through the Barberton Community Development Corporation. In this report, we hope you see that everyone has a role in helping to make Barberton an even better place to live, now and forever. And with your help, we will continue to strengthen the Barberton community for current and future generations by providing leadership, fostering collaboration, and creating a legacy of giving to do good. Thank you for all you do, Dennis Liddle Board Chair

About Us Mission & Vision Strengthening the Barberton Community The mission of Barberton Community Foundation is to strengthen the Barberton community for current and future generations by providing leadership, fostering collaboration, and creating a legacy of giving to do good. We envision an improved quality of life for Barberton residents, now and forever.
History
Barberton Community Foundation was established in 1996 as a 501(c)(3) and further designated as a 509(a)(3) supporting organization public charity to strengthen the community through the perpetual giving power of an endowment. In November of 1996, the citizens of Barberton overwhelmingly supported taking an original gift of $86 million in funds and securities from the sale of Barberton Citizens Hospital and establishing a permanent endowment. Interest earned from the fund would enable grants to be distributed in support of the Barberton community, city and schools over time. Barberton Community Foundation has awarded over 3,400 grants and scholarships totaling more than $104 million since its inception.

Financials
Program Related Investments
Here at the Foundation, we
strive to serve as a catalyst for community investments that contribute to the health and vitality of the Barberton economy and to those living and working in Barberton.
A note from the Director of Finance The Foundation makes Program Related Investments (PRIs) in order to leverage our financial resources, enhance our philanthropic impact, and implement our economic and community development goals.
Since 1996, the Foundation has invested over $11.6 million into economic development projects leading to the creation or retention of jobs in Barberton as well as encouraging investments in property and equipment within the city.
What is a PRI exactly? It’s a loan from the Foundation to organizations such as Barberton Community Development Corporation (BCDC) and Community Development Services (CDS) to support community-focused economic development. These loans are repaid to the Foundation in principal and interest at below market rates. Each investment prioritizes professional due diligence with the goal of balancing risk, return, and mission impact, and requires the prior approval of the Foundation’s Board of Directors.
We are thankful for our long-standing community partnerships with the City of Barberton, Barberton Community Development Corporation and Community Development Services, and look forward to working together on future economic development activity. If you have any questions about our program or would like to discuss an economic development idea, please do not hesitate to give me a call. Go Magics! Brett Fogle, CPA, MT

The Stories
Behind the Giving
A legacy of importance.
A legacy of love and a passion for education Marco Burnette
Marco and Karen met while attending The University of Akron. Their love story is something off a movie screen: he was the quarterback; she was a cheerleader. They married in 1963 and became lifetime educators together. Karen taught business and was a career counselor for 28 years at Barberton High School. Marco says he often hears stories about how much Karen meant to her past students. “Everyone knew her and has a story about her,” he said. “She was constantly volunteering, helping, and doing. She had a gift for imagination and originality.” When Karen passed in 2018, Marco knew he needed to open a scholarship at the Foundation in her honor. “Something was needed to honor a person who had given so much to the students and community, so the scholarship was established in her name.” Since 2018, nine scholarships have been given to help students with their future dreams. Marco intends to build the fund so it will continue in perpetuity. He said, “Karen was so big in life that it is important that she live on in memory and the thoughts of the scholarship recipients. This is a legacy of importance to honor a lady who loved her school and students.” Thank you, Marco, for honoring your wife’s legacy of kindness and education with the Karen Lee Burnette Memorial Scholarship.
Giving Now, Giving for the Future
Building Community Pride for Generations
Sue Cianciola
Mary Jo and Wane Goss
Sue Cianciola established the Cianciola/Macko Scholarship Fund in 2014, in memory of her parents Joseph and Josephine Macko and her husband Donato “Danny” Cianciola. This scholarship is for students pursuing a degree in business or food-related majors. Sue said she and her husband talked often of establishing a scholarship. “When he found out he had terminal cancer he contacted his attorney to get everything done,” Sue said. Danny knew the power of education and wanted to support the next generation of entrepreneurs.
Mary Jo and Wane Goss are generally involved with organizations that work to improve the value of the Barberton community, whether it’s through Kiwanis, the Foundation, BACM, the YMCA, faith-based outreach like the Coalition of Concerned Christians’ soup kitchen, or the very special Towpath trail. “We saw that we could live, work, and play here and really thought that was pretty special,” said Mary Jo. “As we advanced in our careers and had other opportunities to get involved, we found joy from the impact that comes from giving back.”
While Sue has chosen to honor her family’s legacy through the scholarship, she is still active in the community and champions causes for the arts, parks, and beautification of the city. Barberton Community Foundation has served as a vehicle for Sue’s philanthropic efforts. “We are fortunate to have the Foundation, with all they provide locally to our students and businesses. I have lived in Barberton all my life and want to give back to the community,” she said. “I’m proud of our Magic City. To some, with the loss of so many of our businesses through the years, it may seem like we have lost our Magic. We as a community can and will make a difference to bring back our Magic, but we need to work together. I feel the Foundation has a major role in accomplishing this goal.”
Mary Jo and Wane are proud of modeling communityfocused interests for their children and grandchildren. They have worked to establish a tradition of community involvement that their children will build on. Mary Jo said, “We want them to see the benefits of why their grandparents share their time, treasure and talents to improve our community for future generations.” She added, “Everyone has a role to play in helping to build our community, making Barberton an even better place to live now and for generations to come.” Thank you, Mary Jo and Wane, for your generosity!
Thank you, Sue, for your vision and bright philanthropic spirit! 7

2019 Game Changers Paula Kallio
Paula Kallio is a woman who inspires us as an exemplary leader and volunteer. She has committed herself to Barberton, serving on several boards in the community including Lake Anna YMCA, the South Summit Chamber, the Summit County Community Health Committee, the City of Barberton Board of Zoning Appeals, and, most notably, serving as chairman of the board of the Barberton Salvation Army. In her capacity at Salvation Army, Paula organized the Back to School event in August, the annual Labor Day Celebration, and the annual Red Kettle Campaign. Paula married Raymond Kallio and lived in Florida for many years, raising a family and traveling back and forth from Barberton to New Port Richie each year. Paula shared that Ray was her number one supporter. He told her, “Keep doing what you’re doing. Enjoy your life.” Paula lives by those words and shares this wisdom with others she meets. Paula is someone who believes her success has come from surrounding herself with people who are invested in making positive changes in Barberton. Many of Paula’s supporters today are lifelong friends with whom she grew up. They say it is not in her nature to let others fend for themselves. Paula brings a unique touch to her work in Barberton, believing that if you can make a difference to one, it is worth the effort to all.
Bill Aulenbach
Bill Aulenbach is known in Barberton as “the man behind the mums”. Bill worked for 60 years with Yoder Brothers (now Aris Horticulture) and is one of the key individuals who planned and organized the Mum Festival’s mum garden for the last 29 years. Bill’s yearly task has been to produce a uniquely-themed flawless carpet effect of 12,000 mums, with each variety at peak bloom at the same time regardless of weather conditions. This seems an impossible challenge, but Bill’s personal motto is “do it right or don’t do it at all.” This year, Bill abdicated his post as mum master. He is quick to point out the efforts of others in Barberton’s Beautification Department including Lisa McLean, Shirley Harris, Brian Coffman, and Bob Humm as they continue the Mum Festival tradition. Bill is not someone who would claim a legacy, but he has undoubtedly left an impression on a generation of festival attendees. Bill recently moved to Fort Myers, Florida to be closer to his son. We celebrate Bill for his years of dedication to the Mum Festival’s signature floral display.
Magical Theatre Company
Founded in 1972 and directed by Holly Barkdoll and Dennis O’Connell since 1992, Magical Theatre Company is a unique, not-for-profit professional theatre for young audiences and families. Magical’s programming is made up of resident performances, touring productions to schools, and educational programs that include workshops, residencies, after-school programs, summer camps, and resource materials. These programs serve to introduce young people to the theatre, provide positive messages through drama, develop creativity, increase communication skills, build teamwork, and offer alternative methods to problem-solving.
In 2014, Magical recommitted to its Barberton home, the Park Theatre. They embarked on a successful $2 million capital campaign to renovate the building. In 2018, a permanent endowment trust dedicated specifically to artistic excellence was created in honor of the reinvention of Magical Theatre Company. We recognize Magical Theatre Company for the value they bring to this community and for the greater impact of the arts on our youth and those young at heart. 13

Youth Philanthropy Youth Philanthropy Program
Barberton Community Foundation established the Youth Philanthropy program in 2000. The program was developed to help Barberton High School students engage in philanthropy and to encourage awareness about nonprofits working to benefit Barberton. Throughout the school year, students discuss areas of interest to them and what area organizations might fit their interests. In December, students met and interviewed representatives from area nonprofits. In the spring of 2019, students spent a day learning about the grantmaking process and selecting their grant recipients. Students awarded grants to Victory Gallop, the International Soap Box Derby, Embrace Care Clinic, and Magical Theatre Company.

Community
Response to June Flooding
In June 2019, heavy rain and flash
flooding swept through Barberton, devastating families and businesses. As the water receded, Barberton residents responded with community clean up efforts, free laundry, cook outs, and fundraisers to benefit Barberton Community Foundation’s Disaster Relief Charitable Fund.
Community Support
Thanks to donations from businesses, individuals, and local organizations, the Foundation was able to partner with and provide $15,000 to two area agencies: Barberton Area Community Ministries (BACM) and Neighborhood Conservation Services (NCS). The Foundation granted $5,000 to BACM to help replenish their food supply. “We purchased 30 cases of canned corn, 600 lbs. of meat, peanut butter, soup, canned fruit, and 90 dozen eggs, to get started.” Dorothy Somerville, Executive Director of BACM, reported.
Foundation Hosts Governor DeWine with City to Discuss Flooding
In July, the City of Barberton invited Governor Mike DeWine and public officials from Summit and Stark counties to meet at Barberton Community Foundation to discuss the regional impact of flooding on the communities. The goal of the meeting was to take a first step in creating dialogue toward a regional approach to stormwater and flood mitigation.
The Foundation was able to provide $10,000 to NCS to replace basement utility equipment such as furnaces and hot water tanks. Charles Drubel, Executive Director of NCS said, “This funding helped us to provide emergency repairs to HVAC, hot water tanks, or electrical systems that were affected by flooding.” NCS used some of the funding to replace the furnace of a senior gentleman who had over five feet of water in his basement, and replace the hot water tank for a family living on the South side with two young children.
Barberton Community Foundation would like to thank City of Barberton officials for arranging this meeting. We thank the representatives from surrounding cities, villages, townships; the county and state representatives, as well as representatives from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, the Ohio Department of Transportation, and Ohio EPA for joining us in Barberton.

Two Grants for Safety Services Fund Helps Fire and Police Departments
The City of Barberton Safety Services Fund, held by held by local restaurateur Danny Sanchez, was created to support the police and fire departments. In August, the Foundation utilized the fund to purchase an inflatable boat for the Barberton Fire Department. Lt. Mike Beckman said the fire department desperately needed this boat. “It’s quick, versatile, and deployable. We can fill it up using the air at the station or off the truck,” he said. The boat is made of a heavy durable material and has many straps for places to hold onto. When not in use, it collapses to the size of a duffle bag for easy storage on a truck. Lt. Beckman explained that the boat could be used in many instances, such as ice rescue, in the canal, or during a flood. “We have a larger metal boat, but we can’t use that in knee deep water. With this boat, we can walk beside it, or row it,” he explained. In December, the Foundation received a request from Chief Morber and Officer Brandon Watson of Barberton Police. The Safety Services Fund was able to meet their request by purchasing a new breaching tool kit and 14 phones and cases to replace old digital cameras for recording evidence. “The phones provide better pictures and a smoother documenting system,” explained Chief Vince Morber. “We will be able to outfit each of our vehicles with them.” The breaching kit will be utilized by the SWAT team,
comprised of a joint team of police from Barberton, Norton, and New Franklin. It is an all-in-one backpack that contains pry bars, rams, and other tools that are necessary for gaining entry to fortified locations. The kit is made especially for law enforcement use. Chief Morber and Officer Watson explained the efficiency of the kit was key and that the number of barricade situations had increased. Danny Sanchez said he had the idea to start a fund because he wanted to give back. “Both the Barberton fire and police have been coming to our place, Casa Del Ranchero, for years. We just really wanted to give back and do something for them.” Danny typically hosts a golf tournament every year to support his fund.

Camp Invention
Foundation staff visited Camp Invention at Barberton Elementary East. The camp is organized by the National Inventors Hall of Fame and staffed by Barberton teachers. Camp is two weeks long and kindergarten through fourth grade students can participate. The classes all have a superhero storyline to help kids creatively engage in STEM-based learning. The Foundation was able to fund the cost of attendance for 13 students.
Barberton Community Foundation is a proud partner of Barberton’s Girls on the Run program. Three teams from Barberton participated in the fall 5K race: Barberton Elementary East, Barberton Elementary West, and Barberton Middle School. The program, for girls in grades 3-8, includes a 12-week curriculum which encourages girls to develop self-respect and healthy lifestyles through dynamic lessons and running games. Congratulations, girls!
