Impact report 2013 In Review Building a better Barberton, now and forever
From the Executive Director As we enter a new year and look back at 2013, I am ever aware that the time nears for me to transition out of Executive Director of the Foundation to a new personal mission for me, Executive Director of Mercy Economic Development International (MEDIC). The change is bittersweet, as I have been blessed with exceptional opportunity in Barberton and the privilege of working with so many wonderful people. I would like to touch on some highlights of the Foundation’s efforts of 2013 and also reach back to the past four years that I have been at the Foundation to highlight some of the things I believe are setting solid groundwork for the future.
Larry Lallo, Executive Director
Foundation Board of Directors The Foundation is governed by a volunteer board of civic and community leaders who possess both a deep knowledge of and commitment to the future of Barberton. The Directors establish and govern all Foundation policy with respect to operations and investments and approve grants made by the Foundation. Directors are appointed to serve a three-year term, and can be reappointed to serve two additional terms. To learn more, visit www.barbertoncf.org/board-of-directors

A turning point for the Foundation occurred three years ago with the Board’s design and approval of a new Strategic Plan 2011-2020, helping the organization and Board Members focus on strategies that envision growth in areas of most need for Barberton, and I believe we are already realizing the fruits of that labor. As a Board, we created our first Development Plan that looks long term at the community’s and Foundation’s ability to leave a legacy for future generations. Additionally, we have pending Nominating Committee and Board Development guidelines, which will help bring more objectivity and recruiting strength to the Board Member selection process. Using the new nominating guidelines, we have recently chosen four new top-notch citizens that add diversity, expertise, breadth and strength to our current Board of Directors. Internally, we have quality staff necessary to go above and beyond in our scholarship and grant making efforts, and to also seek out and build relationships with outside funders that will take an interest in Barberton and work with us as long-term partners to support our non-profits, initiatives, and projects.
On the grant making and community investments side of things, there are also several impactful projects of note: • a $500K grant in the $17 million Summa Hospital ED Expansion project • development of the $2.2 million Stark State Barberton Satellite Campus • the $225K downtown Towpath Connector bridge project • a $250 investment in the $1.3 million Project Impact residential demolition • substantial improvements to the Erie Depot and the Barber Pig barn • a $699K grant and $1 million loan in the Seiberling project • and most recently a grant commitment of $750K to the Magical Theatre Company’s $1.6 million renovation I am also pleased to report that after taking on a major responsibility in the acquisition and management of the 200 acre New Haven housing development, there has been over $1 million of new home construction over the past recent months.
With much attention to detail, staying focused, and our passion to make Barberton a better place to live and work, we have accomplished all these things with clean financial audits and a spending reduction of our budget by approximately 10%. Soon, as a citizen of Barberton, I look forward to the future and exciting things that are currently underway. It’s never easy, but it’s always worth it. Barberton, thank you for you.
Larry Lallo, Executive Director
Foundation Staff Our internal team is made up of a diverse group of professionals with a wide range of expertise in nonprofit management, financial management, fund and donor development, economic development, public relations, and more. Together, we aim to provide leadership and services of the highest quality to serve the citizens of Barberton.
Addressing a issue critical to the Foundation’s relationship with the citizens of Barberton, I undertook a major initative to improve the quality of our communications, emphasizing a transparent relationship with you, the community, and with the media. As one communication tool, we now have a quality website that provides current news, Board decisions and meeting minutes, a communitywide event calendar and other items we feel will be of use to the community. We are continually trying to improve how we tell the story of the Foundation and of Barberton to the region and beyond, all while sharing with you how together, we are making a difference through programs, grants, scholarships and more. We want everyone to know the good things happening in Barberton!

2013 Memorial Award & Outstanding Citizens Awards
Building [a legacy of community giving and service] On November 9th, 2013 the Barberton Community Foundation held the 14th Annual Community Recognition Dinner, highlighting invaluable contributions of individuals made to our city. Recipients of these annual honors are individuals who have given unselfishly to the Barberton community through service and who have greatly improved the quality of life of the citizens of Barberton.
Robert C. Frutchey Posthumously honoring Bob Frutchey
with a Memorial Award, the Foundation honors his lifetime of service to the Barberton community and beyond. Bob’s attitude of trying without the fear of failure permeated his character and served many he came in contact with over the years. Ever passionate about music, education, and Barberton, Frutchey was Principal French Horn of the Akron Symphony for 42 years, served as director of music for various churches, and as an Assistant Scout Master for Troop 100. Bob was a member and past President of the Magic City Kiwanis Club, read regularly to children at Memorial School, and participated in community activities as often as he could. Despite all of his other involvement, Frutchey may be best known in Barberton for always striving to bring out the best in students, during his 32 year dedication to the city’s youth as a teacher and band director for Barberton City Schools. Bob Frutchey passed away on April 27, 2012 at the age of 76, leaving behind a legacy of music making and community building.

Together, their current volunteering efforts include the Lake Anna YMCA reverse raffle, Bridgestone Invitational Golf Tournament, Tour de Barberton, Relay for Life, Sweetheart Ball and Cotillion, Greynolds Classic, and the Mum Festival. The Woods have served with numerous organizations over the years including the Barberton All Sports Boosters, Junior Achievement, Boy Scout Troop 101, PTA, St. Andrew’s Ladies Guild and many more. Individually, Rhonda dedicates her time to Neighborhood Development Services, the YMCA, and the Esther Ryan Shoe Fund. She was recently named the Akron Area YMCA 2012 Volunteer of the Year for her countless hours and tireless service to the Lake Anna Reverse Raffle and Silent Auction event. Don serves on the City of Barberton Planning Commission, Lake Anna YMCA Advisory board, and in the Magic City Kiwanis Club.
Terry & Pat Taylor Terry and Pat Taylor are the
recipients of the Foundation’s 2013 Outstanding Citizen Award. They are respectively CEO and Vice President of the Wright Tool Company in Barberton, Ohio which manufactures heavy-duty hand tools sold throughout the world. Wright Tool provides numerous jobs in the city and has contributed as a corporate citizen in the community for over 80 years. Frequently donating local events, Wright Tool’s sponsorships help make possible the many programs the community has grown to appreciate and enjoy. As individuals, Terry and Pat’s quiet philanthropy provides overwhelming support to local programs, events, and organizations. Both are very involved in the Barberton community, including years of service to the Barberton Rotary, South Summit Chamber of Commerce, American Heart Association, Salvation Army, Barberton Area United Way Board of Director, and Lake Anna YMCA. The Barberton Community Foundation Scholarship was started in 1997, with only $50,000 allocated to award each year. This amount supported about 30-40 students each year. In 2008, the Foundation wanted to expand the reach of the scholarship program to help even more students achieve their dreams of attending college. After meeting with Barberton City Schools to determine the amount needed to award every student who met the eligibility criteria, the Foundation pledged $480,000 of their annual budget to the program, providing both new scholarships to high school seniors, but also allowing past recipients to renew the scholarship for an additional 3 years. Since the program’s inception in 1997, over $2.5 million has been awarded to Barberton students. Looking forward to 2014, the BCF scholarship program was revamped and redesigned to align with the Barberton City School District’s new Cum Laude ranking system. The new scholarship award structure helps focus scholarship dollars in a way that makes the most impact for an individual student trying to forge ahead in higher education, while still providing opportunity to many outstanding students. For more information on the new scholarship awards, contact Debby Rolland, Director of Community Impact at (330)745-5995.
