The position of Diagonal ZeroZero Tower is exceptional: it is located at the origin of Diagonal, Barcelona’s main avenue; it is very visible from the city and from the coast; and it lays on the border between the consolidated city and the large expanses of public space in the Forum area. Its immediate surroundings consist of isolated buildings in a diverse context of different scales and uses that generate at the same time a metropolitan center and a local neighborhood still in formation.

BRIEF OF TORRE DIAGONAL ZEROZERO

COMPLETED: 2011 Diagonal Zero Zero (also Torre Diagonal ZeroZero, Diagonal 00) is a skyscraper in Barcelona, Spain. The building is 110 metres (360 ft) tall with 24 floors,[1][2] and it serves as the new headquarters of Telefónica in Catalonia. Diagonal Zero Zero is an example of High-tech architecture in the city. The new Torre Telefónica Diagonal ZeroZero was defined by Jaques Herzog as the "minaret that needed the Forum". It is a tower of 110 meters, adjacent to this building, placed in the number zero of the Avenida Diagonal in Barcelona. The position of the tower is unique to its location at the origin of the Diagonal, to be very visible from the city and the coast and found in large areas of public space in the Forum area and the border of the consolidated city. On the other hand, their immediate environment is composed of buildings isolated in a context of scales and various uses which constitute at the same time a metropolitan hub and a local environment still in training. LEAF Awards Review for 2011 The Emirates Glass LEAF Awards is now in its 9th annual year and celebrates the best architecture globally in the last year. The jury - comprising of Lucy Bullivant, Irving Brauer, Stephen Fisher, Angus Brown - were looking for "strategic excellence, marketplace impact and, above all, innovation and practical developments that challenge and change the way we evaluate the buildings of today". The LEAF Awards are open worldwide to all those that have made an "outstanding contribution to the world of architectural design and build". They recognise those that have not only had exceptional success but also shown leadership within their respective fields. The Emirates Glass LEAF Awards is an annual international architectural prize. It recognises innovative architectural design that sets the benchmark for the international architectural community of the next generation. The LEAF Awards program is operated by the Leading European Architects Forum (LEAF), founded in 2001. LEAF brings together leading international architects and designers operating in Europe and beyond to share knowledge, to network and to develop new partnerships.[1]

BRIEF OF TORRE DIAGONAL ZEROZERO

COMPLETED: 2011

It is a contextual tower that has a double reading, from near and afar, in response to the two scales that such tall buildings must address. Taking the urban directions that form the perimeter of the plot as generators of its form, it is a trapezoidal prism, sharp and stylized, a clean and serene form, whitish and light, which reveals dynamic volumes that respond to the different specificities of the interior program and relate to the various heights of nearby buildings. The exterior responds to the city and the view from afar, and the interior responds to the program and the close-up vision. The corporate program that the tower hosts has a major public part that will connect it to urban flows, situated on the ground floor, which actually comprises three interrelated levels, around an atrium 40 meter high that follows the slope of the adjacent Plaça Fòrum. This direct visual and physical continuity with the city will help the tower benefit from civic activities and will facilitate citizens to participate and enjoy the activities in the building. Inside the tower four singular points make the ensemble dynamic and generate a variety of interior experiences despite being a relatively conventional program of corporate headquarters: the main lobby atrium, facing Diagonal; an atrium on the 17th level that goes all the way up to the top of the building, facing the Maresme coast; the terrace and the double height the Board Room, located on the 23rd floor; and the auditorium, which occupies two floors and is split into an orchestra and two amphitheaters that can operate autonomously for smaller groups.
