2020 Season – Barking Gecko Theatre

BARKING GECKO THEATRE 2020

A wise man once said that a person who has no imagination has no wings.

Barking Gecko Theatre acknowledges the traditional owners of country throughout Western Australia and their continuing connection to land and culture. We pay our respects to Elders past, present and emerging. We are honoured to create our work on Whadjuk country, the ancestral lands of the Noongar people.

Barking Gecko Theatre’s 2020 Season is a year of airborne adventures that will set imaginations soaring. Our premiere work, HOUSE, a contemporary fairy-tale about loneliness and belonging, will introduce you to a cast of incredible characters on board a magical flying house. We will also see the return of Bambert’s Book of Lost Stories (my first show for the Company!), the story of a small man who sends his wishes out into the world on little hot air balloons. I am thrilled that two of our classic works are jetting off as well - Fully Sikh on a tour of regional WA and My Robot on our largest national tour in 15 years.

Our Creative Learning Programs continue to grow, with Gecko Ensembles establishing new locations across WA and School Drama kicking off in Karratha, alongside a record number of Perth classrooms. 2020 also sees the introduction of the Gecko Press Club, a new program that will invite young people to join in Perth’s cultural conversation as equals. Barking Gecko Theatre nurtures creativity in children and inspires our audiences to imagine the world anew. We bring exceptional artists together to create productions and programs that give wings to young hearts and minds. Come fly with us. Luke Kerridge Artistic Director

HELLO

WELCOME There is a little bit of magic in every Barking Gecko Theatre production. Sometimes it’s actual magic such as 2019’s A Ghost in My Suitcase and My Robot and other times it’s the joy of connecting with the story unfolding in front of you - such as Fully Sikh where Sukhjit Kaur Khalsa’s personal story was also a shared story of growing up, facing our fears and forming our sense of identity. At Barking Gecko, children are at the heart of everything we do. We exist to tell stories about and for them, support them to express themselves and create opportunities for them to experience and imagine a world and a life beyond their current circumstances. Our works can be raw and honest, sad and funny and at the same time always, always filled with optimism that the future holds joy, opportunity and promise. I’ve come to understand that the magic in a Barking Gecko show is not just experienced by our young audience, but is available to everyone. And I think this is what makes the work of Barking Gecko special - it reminds us all to look for the joy and the positive opportunity in everything. The 2020 season, the first programmed by our Artistic Director Luke Kerridge, has joyful experiences in store for us all. Take my advice and do not miss HOUSE in July! Luke demonstrates yet again that the finest theatre made for the youngest amongst us is actually a gift to us all. Join us and share the magic in 2020. Bev East Chair 2

Barking Gecko Theatre has been a cultural institution for over 30 years in Western Australia. It is not only locally cherished, but is a nationally significant theatre company. In 2020, Barking Gecko is welcoming thousands of outer metropolitan school children into the State Theatre Centre, many for the first time, delivering on its vision to provide access to Barking Gecko’s productions. In 2020, Barking Gecko Theatre is back on the road with its award winning production of My Robot with performances in over 20 Australian towns and cities. It will also continue to connect children and their families through performances, the continuation of Gecko Ensembles and an innovative Creative Learning program. When you lose something, you gain something else Cathelijn is completely and undeniably alone: no friends, no family, no-one to turn to. All by herself in the centre of a dark forest, she tries to be strong, like a Viking. And that’s when she sees it - the house. A higgledy-piggledy mess of a place as tall as the trees. Inside, she finds Piotr, a small boy who never stops talking, and Elka, a grey-haired explorer who insists they keep the curtains closed tight. When they suddenly launch into the air and set off across the sky, Cathelijn learns that this is no ordinary house: it’s a Rescue House,

and it rescues the Loneliest Child in the world. So begins an extraordinary adventure that takes Cathelijn across the world and deep inside herself, on a journey of selfrealisation and self-determination. A new contemporary fairy-tale, HOUSE is a mad-cap adventure story of loneliness, belonging and flying houses. Featuring a cast of memorable characters, and a living breathing house, this fun-filled escapade for the whole family will set imaginations soaring.l set imaginations soaring.

“A perfectly formed masterpiece” – The Australian This is the story of Bambert - an impossibly small man with an enormous love for writing. Tucked away in his quiet attic, his only companions are the characters he has created in his stories. And then one day, Bambert decides to set his stories free, to send them out into the world on little balloons in the hope that they will find a home. The stories contain instructions: whoever finds them should return them to Bambert, postmarked with a stamp from wherever they

landed, so he knows where they should be set. But as each day passes and no stories return, Bambert’s hope begins to fade. Will his stories ever find a home? Since its premiere in 2016, Bambert’s Book of Lost Stories has charmed audiences across the country and around the globe. This special return season of our Helpmann Award winning production brings Bambert home to Perth once more. A reminder of how stories connect us to the world and ultimately, the power of kindness.

FULLY SIKH Barking Gecko Theatre & Black Swan State Theatre Company’s

By Sukhjit Kaur Khalsa

“Fully Sikh arrives, perfectly formed, at the intersections of culture, faith and humanity and asks that we listen” – Artshub

Sukhjit Kaur Khalsa shot to fame in Australia and around the world with her poetry on Australia’s Got Talent. But before she went viral, Sukhjit was a brown, hairy girl growing up in the suburbs of Perth. Full of heart and hilarity, Fully Sikh is a contemporary coming of age story exploring racism, generational change, forgiveness and identity. Sukhjit celebrates family and culture, in all of its complexity, told with her signature lyrical style and flow, with live music accompaniment from Pavan Kumar Hari. Fully Sikh premiered in 2019 to critical acclaim, standing ovations and a season extension due to audience demand. This year, our co-production with Black Swan State Theatre Company hits the road on a tour of regional WA.

“This is children’s theatre at its best” – Seesaw Magazine

The AWGIE award winning My Robot sets off on a national tour across the country! When Ophelia moves with her family to the seaside, she’s not impressed. She feels like she is missing a piece of herself. As she unpacks, she finds a strange box full of parts with a curious note attached: ‘You. Make. Me’. Ignoring her father’s warnings about the dangers of her ingenious inventions, Ophelia sets to work and builds herself a new robot friend named Olivetti, complete with a typewriter chest and alarm clock heart. Made up of pieces, but more than the sum of her parts. Featuring a real-life robot (chock-full of special robot tricks!), My Robot is a rambunctious family tale that reminds us we are all made of different parts and when we feel less than whole, we can find – or make – a part that fits.

SCHOOL DRAMA

In partnership with Sydney Theatre Company

“THE MOST SIGNIFICANT PROFESSIONAL LEARNING EXPERIENCE OF MY TEACHING CAREER” GRETEL WATSON, CURL CURL NORTH PUBLIC SCHOOL

“Drama engages children in the big questions in life” – Professor Robyn Ewing AM What Does School Drama™ involve?

School Drama™ is a professional learning program for primary school teachers. The program demonstrates the power of using drama strategies with quality literature for improving English and literacy in children.

• One-on-one professional learning in the classroom • Expert instruction from experienced teaching Artists • Full day in-service training with Prof. Robyn Ewing & John Nicholas Saunders (Sydney Theatre Company) before the start of term • Two customised planning sessions • Seven weekly in-class workshops (60 – 90mins) • Practical approaches to teaching the WA English syllabus • A wide range of drama strategies to employ across the curriculum

Barking Gecko Theatre partners participating classroom teachers with one of our Teaching Artists over a school term and together the pair explores how drama strategies can be integrated into any area of English and literacy. For example: creative and imaginative writing, inferential comprehension, confidence in oracy or descriptive language. Now in its tenth year across Australia, School Drama™ increases teacher’s confidence in using the Arts as a teaching tool. Evaluation of School Drama™ shows the program has a direct outcome of improving literacy outcomes in students.

How does School Drama™ benefit children? Longitudinal research and sustainability studies conducted by Professor Robyn Ewing AM and The University of Sydney have shown: • Increased student academic achievements in literacy and English • Improved student confidence • Significant shifts in classroom cohesion How does School Drama™ benefit teachers?

18

Ongoing research and evaluations illustrate that the co-mentoring model between the teacher and the teaching artist is a powerful professional learning experience with teachers continuing to use their knowledge long after the School Drama sessions have concluded.

How Do I Sign Up? For more information, and overview of the program and details about cost contact Hannah Smith at hannah.smith@barkinggecko.com.au or call (08) 6212 9391. School Drama™ is available in metropolitan schools in Term 2, 3 and 4 in 2020. In 2020, Barking Gecko Theatre gratefully acknowledges the support of the Crown Resorts Foundation and Packer Family Foundation to provide access to School Drama™ to schools that require additional financial support. Please contact us for more information.

GECKO PRESS CLUB

ARTIST DEVELOPMENT Supporting WA Artists

Barking Gecko Theatre takes its name from the Underwoodisaurus milii – a small gecko known for its loud voice. Gecko Press Club is the embodiment of this idea. A new voice in the cultural conversation of Perth, Gecko Press Club is a group of outspoken children who will review performances , create pod-casts, conduct interviews and be all-round social and political commentators. Working with a range of mentors, these little raconteurs are ready and waiting to cause a stir. For more information please contact learning@barkinggecko.com.au or call us on (08) 6212 9399.

Fresh Ink

Winter Nights All Ages Development

Barking Gecko Theatre is proud to partner with The Australian Theatre for Young People to deliver Fresh Ink.

Barking Gecko Theatre is committed to broadening the landscape of children’s theatre makers and creating pathways for local independent artists. We are thrilled to partner with the Blue Room Theatre to support WA artists and the development of a new work for young audiences.

The only program of its kind in Australia, Fresh Ink is designed to bridge the gap into professional practice for emerging playwrights. Four emerging WA writers will be mentored by local playwright Will O’Mahony to develop a new work over twelve months. Now in its fourth year, several of our Fresh Ink alumni have gone on to have their completed works staged across Perth.

As part of the Blue Room’s Winter Nights Program, the selected artist is given space, financial resources and guidance from Barking Gecko’s Artistic Director Luke Kerridge to develop their work. The development culminates in a work-inprogress showing in the Blue Room Studio. Contact gecko@barkinggecko.com.au or call us on (08) 6212 9399 for more information and application details.
