DESIGN BRIEF

NEED : A need for a new detached house design for Londoners has been identified. The task is to design a house that solves the problems that we are currently facing today in terms of real estate development. The design theme is modernism, which means the rules of old architecture for example slopped roofs goes out of the window and, the focus is to design a house that has is innovative since we have range of new materials to use for both function and structural strength purposes. Open plan interiors and large windows are essential however, ornament is optional. The design must tackle the issues we have with the houses we currently have. RESPONSE : I am going to carry out research on the materials that are commonly used in modern architecture as this will allow me to design a house that will stand the test of time. Looking at designers that have already made an impact in the industry who focus on the same theme (modernism), is going to give me a direction as to how my design should look like and the requirements of a modern building (house). The specification on the next page is going to guide all my ideas to being fit for purpose.

SPECIFITION For my design to be market fit it must meet the following criteria as this would allow it make its stand and establish itself within the industry,:

PROPOSAL

JUSTIFICATION

Aesthetically pleasing

For a design to be a good design it must be a to attract clients from the outside because this is what they see before they actually go inside to look at the property.

Function

The Design a ditched house that will accommodate a number of clients from different ages. The houses must have at least 4 bedrooms, 3 Bathrooms, 1 fairly large kitchen, 3 recreational rooms that encourage family interaction/ gathering and, 1 living room, 1 dining room, 2 garages and at least 2 floors. The house must have a minimal amount of windows cover a reasonable space to allow natural light to be the main light source.

Theme: Modernism and Minimalism

I chose this theme because it allows me to be creative with my design as there are less restrictions to the way modern houses should look like or the materials that be used to make the building. Minimalism is supported by the modern movement and I am basing my designs partly on this idea because it automatically makes the design environmentally friendly and sustainable which is the direction where we are heading towards.

Fit for purpose

RESEARCH PLAN For my design to be market fit, I must carry out research which will guide my design, consequently making my design fit for purpose. The following points will help do exactly that,:

WHAT

WHY

Drawing Methods

Knowing how to draw my ideas I will grant knowledge on how to visually present designs in a understandable way.

Look at different ways of drawing method, this includes elevation drawings, plan drawings, perspective drawing and tracing.(online research methods)

Designers & Existing spaces

Designers often have unique ways sketching methods and would have designed buildings in the past which will help design something that is not too radical that will end up steering conflict. Their designs will also work as inspiration for my designs.

Research the different designers that base their designs on the same theme or something similar.

INTRODUCTION I am going to design a house based on modernism and minimalism for a theme because I believe that modernism stretches real estate design to an extent where houses are more than just a place where we sleep eat and drink. By definition modernism is “a movement towards modifying traditional beliefs in accordance with modern ideas Modernism in architecture, is without doubt changing the way we live. This is because most of our lives especially people living in Europe spend 90% of our lives indoors, so therefore the interior of the buildings were live has to be economic, user and environmentally friendly. Minimalism goes hand in hand with modernism and I have decided to use minimalism as a moderator, to stop me from going overboard with the idea of modernism.

INITIAL SKETCHES

For my design to be market fit it must meet the following criteria as this would allow it make its stand and establish itself within the industry,:

TIMED DRAWINGS

As a way to get us started we were asked to draw different plans within a short spaces of time, first we were asked to draw plans in 3 minutes (drawing 1-4) and then later we were drawing against 10 minutes (drawing 5-7).

TIMED DRAWINGS LAYOUT From drawing these different interior spaces, I noticed that all these spaces are designed for user convenience and how they are a careful positioned to minimise the distance the user has to travel to get to rooms that they use the most. I’ve learnt that the interior spaces are usually the most difficult spaces to design because there are a combination of that stairs, rooms and corridors that are all connected to the use the building for example, this design of the museum American Folk Art Museum designed by Tod Williams and Billie Tsien and all the stairs are located in the west side to make it easier for all the visitors to get around the museum. RELATION Looking at these interior spaces grants me a broader knowledge of how interior spaces should be designed and the thought that goes behind each designs. Although this is a museum design, I will use these designs in the following four slides to careful places the rooms, corridors and the stairs of my house. My designs will clearly illustrate the principals of these design because the design has a number of things at heart but most importantly the client.

TIMED DRAWINGS LAYOUT Although this was just an exercise, I’ve learnt that there is more to an interior space than just placing rooms into a confined four sided box of walls. I have learnt that there is a number of the strategies used to make the interior space fir for purpose. In this hotel suite design you can see that the rooms are placed in order of complementation in terms of how the rooms will be used at certain times. For example the bathroom was placed next to the bedroom. This is because the bathroom has to be closer to the bedroom as people usually take a bath before they go to bed or early in the morning so it is only logical to place the rooms next to each other to minimise the distance between them.

RELATION Looking at this particular space, I can take the idea of a placing rooms next to each other to reduce the walking distance between the rooms. I will look at the more of these spaces to develop my understanding of what an interior space should be and what it should do for the user.

TIMED DRAWINGS LAYOUT This is an interior space that coherently illustrates my theme. The design has a number of things that I quite for example the simple layout of the floor makes it cheaper to make the as the materials used would straight forward because the walls are just

ELEVATION DRAWING HOUSES

Following the timed drawings. We started looking at different elevation plan drawing as an exercise to stimulate our perspective drawing skills. So I went onto Architizer to find buildings that had pictures that were taken from different view points.

ELEVATION DRAWING TREES After looking at the different interior spaces that for exercises, I went onto drawing trees as this was part of the flip learning. Knowing that site was part of my brief I thought that trees seemed appropriate.

Looking at these designs I can see that they are all connected by the way all the roofs are flat and the big bold windows that cover up most of the house’s walls. These features are what people identify contemporary building design as.

DESIGNER Jean Nouvel Jean Nouvel is a French architect who wet to École des Beaux-Arts which based in the . He has won multiple awards for his designs that are internationally recognised, he has won architectural design awards such as Aga Khan Award for Architecture, Institut du Monde Arabe. His designs have without doubt influenced some of the modern design principals. He has designed a range of different buildings across the globe. His designs are directly related to modernism but at the same time he blends the principals of the movement with his own. Unlike most architects Nouvel starts his designs as words which he then converts into drawings and in some cases they then lead to widely recognised buildings.

TOWER 25 The tower stands at 203ft tall with 17floors and it cost roughly around 25million euros to construct the whole structure. The building is located in Cyprus, in Nicosia facing the Venetian Fortifications of the city next to Zaha Hadid’s Eleftheria Square which is a redesign of the old building, it’s currently under construction. It has full length balconies on each floor that can be used for plantation as illustrated in the photos. It has one elevator that goes vertically across all the floors as a way of faster transportation.

This tower was designed so that it would work as beehive, meaning it was designed to be used for both commercial and real estate purposes. This concept is also seen in the way the greenery makes the rectangular shape look alive and the window layout makes it look like its breathing. The concept takes both natural and synthetic looks and blends together by taking different sides of the building and making them reflect the different personalities that it accommodates by making the north and south look welcoming in the sense that it has the most of the greenery there but when you look at the west and eastern perspective you see the severe personality of the business that are run in the same building.

DESIGNS I like the design for a number of reasons, one the building takes shows how I can design a building that has a to different types of target audiences. The second reason is the fact that the building has a connection to nature but its location is in the very heart of the city. This helps as many people that live in the city actually don’t have that connection to the countryside and if they want to go the countryside you have to make a trip. Finally I like it because it not only brings something new to its surroundings but it also takes a considerable amount of it surroundings’ visual identity with the rectangular windows.

TRIP

The visit was part of primary research and this would help me get an idea o how the contemporary designers get the overall image. The

PRIMARY REASEACH CITY HALL

During my visit to the tower bridge vicinity I took a tour around the city hall, I only got see the first two floors because the floors higher are of limits to the general public. From looking at the floors from the inside, I saw noticed that there was a giant stair case that swirled around the whole building from the ground floor to the top to make getting around the building faster and easier, there are elevators that take you from one floor to another.

DESIGNS

After looking at the structure of the building, I went onto making athis model I understood that wire was a good material for getting the model that looks like the city hall out of wire as a way of experimentingbasic shape of the structure however the making an entire model using with the materials that I can use to make my final model. From makingwire would require a lot of experience and knowledge of its properties.

DESIGNS

Since the brief states that the house must based on modernism, I thought of ways that I could change the stairs from being traditional. For inspiration I went on Pinterest to find stair case ideas that I could incorporate to my design and this example caught my eye. I like this idea because its clean and simple, making it the perfect fit for my design.

DESIGNS As part of developing my idea that was inspired by the city hall, I started designing the interior of the house. To make a good design I had to make start with the room layout. This meant the I was going to design the way each room on each floor would look. Keeping the theme of the project in mind.

DESIGNS Following the interior layout design, I started looking at the exterior and designing it so that it would look like a modern building from the outside as this is what most people look see first. The design covers the structure of the building form the out side as this would help me visualise the design easily. The drawings below are different elevation drawings of the design.
