THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST

6

Oscar Wilde’s cherished The Importance of Being Earnest returns to the Barn Theatre, after its successful 2019 run.

Rapid quick-changes, tap dancing, fabulous frocks and enough tea to sink a ship, audiences are in for a wildly waggish time.

This hilarious, twoman re-imagining of the classic will delight and entertain in equal measure.

It’s Oscar Wilde’s classic as you’ve never seen it before – Built by Barn style!

Already recognised as one of the UK’s funniest plays, this ingenious, riotous, re-telling of the story has two incredibly talented actors playing every single character.

4 MAR – 18 APR MARCH

BEN HUR Patrick Barlow, the adaptor of The 39 Steps, weaves his compressed style into one of the largest and funniest stories ever told. This comedy farce is based on one of the best-selling books of the nineteenth century and this adaptation condenses the saga so that it can be told by just four actors.

PATRICK BARLOW

BY BASED ON THE NOVEL BY GENERAL ‘LEW’ WALLACE “Ben Hur” is presented by special arrangement with SAMUEL FRENCH LTD, a Concord Theatricals Company

within Jerusalem during the life of Jesus Christ. All may not go to plan as this Built By Barn production follows a theatre troupe struggling to stage one of the most epic tales of all time. Rivalries form, offstage romances blossom and intervene, complete with a chariot race, a sea battle and stage combat.

Ben Hur, as you may know it, charts the story of the fictional Jewish prince and merchant Judah who falls to galley slave and rises to champion charioteer

21 APR – 9 MAY JEEVES & WOOSTER Take your seats with caution! This is the Barn Theatre’s first coproduction. We are partnering with Theatre Chipping Norton to take this Jeeves & Wooster production to over 50 venues across the UK, including the Barn at the end of April.

A NEW PLAY ADAPTED FROM THE WORKS OF PG WODEHOUSE WRITTEN BY THE GOODALE BROTHERS

Aristocratic buffoon Bertie Wooster has hired the theatre for the night to present his one-man show detailing a recent and rather spectacular series of misadventures, including the theft of a novelty cow creamer and a narrow escape from unwanted matrimony. The only trouble is Bertie hasn’t worked out who’s going to play the parts.

Will the show be a disaster? Will the scenery stay upright? Or will his trusty manservant Jeeves step in and save the day? In a joyous reimagining of the classic PG Wodehouse characters, three actors hurl themselves from role to role as they race to tell the story of Bertie’s own farcical adventures. Jeeves and Wooster in Perfect Nonsense was created by the Goodale Brothers, adapted primarily from PG Wodehouse’s ‘The Code of the Woosters.’ After hugely successful runs in the West End, it won the 2014 Olivier Award for Best New Comedy.

THE MOZART QUESTION Following our successful production of The Butterfly Lion, The Barn and Sir Michael Morpurgo have reunited to bring this hugely important story to life. The story has been adapted for the stage by the talented Vicki Berwick. We open with a young reporter sent to interview the great violinist Paolo Levi. There’s just one condition - she must not ask The Mozart Question. However, as the interview unfolds, Paolo begins to tell her his life story, including the answer to the mystery.

BY MICHAEL MORPURGO ADAPTED FOR THE STAGE BY VICKI BERWICK

Catch the show before it goes on a UK wide tour!

He takes us back to his childhood in Venice recounting how he discovered a violin in his home. A violin with a haunting traumatic past set against the backdrop of the Holocaust. “...It is the most important story I have ever written, about the best and most beautiful and most heavenly that is in us, and the worst and most wicked and most hellish too. I have no doubt the Barn are creating a play worthy of the immensity of the tragedy, a play that reflects the power of music to heal, to bring reconciliation and peace in a troubled world.” – Michael Morpurgo

15 JUL – 5 SEP BRIGADOON The Barn Theatre presents a new take on the classic 1943 Broadway musical by Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe, honouring the original production by breathing new life into, and emphasising, the relevance of the story behind the musical.

BOOK AND LYRICS BY

ALAN JAY LERNER

MUSIC BY

FREDERICK LOEWE

ORIGINAL DANCES CREATED BY AGNES DEMILLE

Performed by arrangement with Music Theatre International (Europe) Limited

By marrying the epic score with a traditional Scottish Ceilidh folk band the story is given a vibrant energy through actormusicianship. That small contemporary folk style will infuse and emphasise the Scottish tones of the original score of Brigadoon, merging

AUGUST

it with the Barn’s passion for ensemble storytelling and actormusicianship. The Barn will deliver this magical tale to a modern-day audience.

BARN LEARNING Barn Learning is our approach to empowering young people and engaging them in the arts.

Our philosophy is inspired by Arts Council England’s Seven Quality Principles, which aim to raise the standard of work being produced by, with and for children and young people. The 3 Pillars of the Barn Learning Ethos • Storytelling and Creative Learning for the Community • The Wellbeing of the Performer • Access, Inclusion, Diversity and Participation

22

Sunday Academy Our sessions provide young people aged 4-18 with a fun and safe learning environment, giving them the opportunity to hone skills, to make life-long friends and to become well-rounded individuals. Our tutors apply a 360 degrees approach to learning, applying various learning styles and structuring content to suit our learners’ needs. From full-scale musicals to showcases and group projects, we are invested in empowering our young people to develop both their creative skills and their people skills.

The Barn Youth Company is an initiative that aims to give our young creatives a voice and a safe space, wherein they can develop their practice, critical artistry and creative entrepreneurship. Our Vision is to establish a community of practice in the Cotswolds that is renowned for inspiring young creatives to be the best they can be. Our Ambition is to nurture future generations of theatre makers, innovators and active citizens. School Workshops Barn Learning’s culture extends beyond its four walls. Our workshops programme seeks to engage young people to explore facets of our Built by Barn shows, focusses on specific areas of theatre, and bespoke workshops tailored to schools’ needs. Internships and Placements The Learning team is invested in the professional development of young people. We provide internships and placements to local and European youth throughout the year. Our team has recently established a relationship with Studio 18, a creative youth organisation in Malta, in order to promote cultural exchange.

23 “Incredible standard. Huge talent. Very professional tuition. They know how to bring the best out of their students!” Barn Academy parent

BARN COMMUNITY The Barn Theatre strives to do its utmost to engage with the local community and to create an environment accessible to all – we aim to be Relevant, Reflective and Responsive. This on-going commitment has risen to the forefront of our vision and paved the way for a number of initiatives: #TheatreForAll Ticket Scheme The Theatre For All free ticket scheme removes financial barriers so that disadvantaged people from all walks of life, from children to older people, can experience live professional theatre in a welcoming environment. Scheme participants enjoy access to a choice of any Built By Barn Productions throughout the year, as part of our mission to engage our community in theatre.

24

Front of House Volunteer Programme This programme regularly recruits members of the community to a team of dedicated volunteers, proud to be a part of life at the Barn Theatre.

Scholarships Scheme The Barn Theatre awards scholarships to young people engaged in the Barn Learning programme who are suffering financial hardship. This process is means tested, by application and a panel review. Community Choirs Our community choirs gather at local venues to learn a song and perform it within three hours – anyone can participate! Workshops Throughout the year, the Barn Theatre holds workshops open to the public, both at the weekend and during holiday periods. This year’s programme aims to introduce participants to the various elements of performance.

25 “It was very inclusive and lovely seeing the children blossom and their confidence grow throughout the day.” Wendy, Primary School Teacher (The Butterfly Lion drama workshop)

BREMNER AT THE BARN AMATEUR THEATRE The Barn Theatre is proud to support amateur theatre.

26

Following Rory Bremner’s three previous sold-out engagements at the Barn, he will be creating a new series of exclusive performances for the theatre under Bremner At The Barn. Rory Bremner is the UK’s leading comedy and satirical impressionist. Over forty years ago, Bremner put on a duffel coat and performed his first public impression – of his French teacher, Derek Swift. Nine years later, he starred in his first BBC series Now – Something Else and starting contributing to Spitting Image. Today, Rory Bremner is widely rated as Britain’s sharpest impressionist – a one-

man opposition party. After the popularity of his previous performances, priority booking will be available for members, Friends and Patrons for each event in the series. Following which, any remaining tickets will be made available to the general public.

“[I] love the Barn and it’ll be great to bring some exciting and talented friends to perform here”.

Theatre Ink and COS Productions have come together to perform shows at the Barn Theatre as TinkCo. The groups have been performing sideby-side for 8 years, constantly evolving and growing closer, and now, within our ‘memberships’, there are many who are involved with both. The next natural step is to bring this relationship even High Society: Chicago: Chess:

closer by forming one theatre group. Theatre Ink has grown into one of the top amateur groups in the area, celebrating 10 successful years, and expands its reach into Swindon. COS is a long-established award-winning group, with a 68-year history, embedded in Cirencester town. Both groups share audiences and cast members. TinkCo will continue to perform at the Barn Theatre in 2020. 25th - 28th March 2020 1st - 4th July 2020 4th - 7th November 2020

Each show has a Saturday matinee.

CASHBACK We understand how difficult it is for charitable groups and various volunteer organisations to raise money.

The Barn Theatre Cashback scheme is a great way to generate funds for your charity or organisation and have a great night out at the same time. The Barn Theatre is looking to help groups like yours to raise much needed funds by incorporating fundraising into a theatre trip. This makes fundraising for your group almost effortless – you’ve just got to come along to the theatre, have a great evening, and your organisation can benefit greatly from it!

42

Bring your colleagues, friends or family to the theatre and for every ticket purchased we will make up to a 20% donation of the total cost into your nominated fund. • Up to 10 tickets = 5% donation • Above 10 tickets = 10% donation • Above 20 tickets = 15% donation • Above 30 tickets = 20% on the total order.

THE MORE PEOPLE YOU BRING THE MORE MONEY YOU CAN RAISE! The Barn Theatre Cashback applies to all matinees and Built by Barn evening performances on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesday only.

HOW DOES CASHBACK WORK?

• You will need to appoint a coordinator who will contact and collate numbers of all those interested in attending one of our Built by Barn professional shows. The coordinator will be entitled to one complimentary ticket. • The coordinator will then place an order for a given number of tickets by contacting the Barn Theatre Box Office for the production you wish to attend. • The Barn Theatre will raise an invoice for the total amount for payment. • Once paid, tickets will be emailed to the coordinators address. • 30 days after your visit, The Barn Theatre will make the specified donation into the charity/funds of your choice.
