Sensational spring flowering native plants Spring is the main flowering season for all plants, especially Australian natives, and Barossa Nursery is full of fabulous flowering plants. Some of the best Australian natives are Boronia’s and these are covered with tiny bell flowers in yellow, brown, purple, pink and white exuding a strong sweet perfume. New in is Dampiera “Mallee Mauve”, covered with a profusion of small bright blue flowers, a small shrub growing 50cm x 50cm. The Fringed Myrtle Micromytus ciliata prostrate form, growing one metre high and two metres wide is smothered in hundreds of tiny white flowers. Growing in full sun to part shade, it is a glorious addition to any garden. The Philotheca “Cascade of Stars”, growing 50cm x 50cm has masses of pink buds and white starry flowers – a gorgeous small plant. The Limestone Pea, Chorizema varium is full of brilliantly coloured orange red flowers, grows 30cm high and one metre wide in sun or part shade, and thrives on our alkaline soils. It makes a very showy display. Some gorgeous Grevillias in flower now include “New Blood”, a hardy ground cover 25cm high one metre wide with brilliant
red flowers, Grevillia “Fireworks” with hot red and yellow flowers, a small shrub growing one metre high by 75cm wide, and Grevillia “Winter delight” with hot pink flowers contrasting beautifully with the low growing silver foliage. Another fantastic Grevillia is Grevillia candelabroides with spectacular grey needlelike foliage and long clusters of scented white candle-like flowers. A very stunning native is the Isopogon “Candy Cones” with bright purple spiky flowers with spiky foilage. It enjoys full sun growing 1.2 metres high by one metre wide. There is also an Isopogon called “Sparkler” and the foliage looks just like a green form of sparkler. For fabulous contrasting foliage, try Acacia “Lime Magic”, a four metre high pendulous tree with soft fine lime gold foliage. Can be used as a hedge or a magnificent feature specimen. Another fabulous foliage plant is the native foxglove, Pityrodia terminals. This is a highly attractive small shrub to one metre with pink flowers born in profusion throughout spring and summer. A very exotic rare Australian native
plant is Diplolaena angustifolia. This is an outstanding small bushy shrub 1m x 1m with mid green foliage and large pendulous orange flowers from winter to spring and is tolerant of alkaline soil. Another exotic native is Phebalium white; a small shrub with brilliant yellow small star flowers. It makes a wonderful low hedge and is a great cut flower. A very lovely shrub is Thomasia grandiflora, a hardy long-lived, small shrub with soft bright green foliage and large soft frilled lavender starry flowers. Two very showy colourful natives are Lechenualtia formosa prostrate red, a ground cover smothered with brilliant red small flowers, and Epacris “Panpipes”, a 1m x 1m shrub with a profusion of dainty tubular flowers of rose pink with starry white corolla, flowering from Autumn through to spring. Very dramatic is the Banksia “Bronzed Aussie”, a dense medium shrub with huge bronze candle-like flowers, that honeyeaters love. These and many, many more flowering natives are available at the beautiful Barossa Nursery.

Let’s ask Erica ... Have your gardening questions answered by Barossa Nursery, Barossa Valley Way, Nuriootpa. Dear Erica, My standard Lilly Pilly’s always get these unsightly bobbles on the outer leaves. How do I get rid of them? Kate B. Answer: You have psyllids, which are notorious for attacking Lilly Pilly’s, some varieries being more susceptible than others. A clear winged little insect lays its eggs on the new growth and these bobbles form. If you ever see these clear insects, spray with Confidor, but just clip the damaged outer foliage on a regular basis. Lilly Pillies respond well to clipping, producing new bushy growth. Erica. Dear Erica, We love fresh asparagus and would like to grow some. How do I prepare the soil and how deep do you plant the crowns? Jason and Bec. Answer: Dig the bed thoroughly, working in old compost or manure. Plant the crowns in trenches approximately 20cm deep and 30cm wide. Lightly cover the crowns with soil, gradually filling in the trenches as the shoots grow. Regular applications of Seasol or a good fertilizer is beneficial. Erica.
Pauline’s luxury living area Walking into Stray Leaves at Angaston will give anyone a sense of calm and intrigue with its Asian-themed decorations and welcoming feel. The former B&B has been owned by Ms Pauline Hakala for about seven years, but she only began converting it into a home mid last year. The three bedroom B&B was managed by Ms Hakala’s sister and had an old country home styling. The interior has changed dramatically since then, with bold red splashes and intriguing details scattered through the home. Red is heavily featured in the house, with Ms Hakala saying it is a very stimulating colour. A standout of the house is the kitchen, with a red pressed metal splashback. Ms Hakala and her husband, Timo began the renovations in May last year and the inside was finished by December. Ms Hakala said her favourite and the most used part of the house is the spacious, open plan living room, which used to be the backyard. “We have everything right here; a kitchen, lounge and
living area,” she said. “It’s a great room to sit in.” She said the room is perfect for her and her husband because he loves cooking and they both love entertaining. The inspiration for the theme came from Timo’s trips to China for his export business, where he picked up many of the pieces that are now in the home. The entry of the home still incorporates the old style of the house, with a modern touch slowly introduced through to the living area. The house, which dates back to 1890, features leadlighting done by a Williamstown artist. Ms Hakala said the whole renovation was well supported by local tradespeople. “Our builder from Sydney did the demolition work but he was so confident with the local people so he left them to do the rest.” The next step for the couple is to move the renovations to the exterior of the house, with an entertaining area outside the living area. “We want to go further out with the deck to make a bar and barbecue area, it would complete the package.”
Ms Pauline Hakala was inspired by Asian ornaments, prints and decorations.
Dear Erica, What do you recommend for spraying roses, mainly black spot, at this time? Renee’ G. Answer: Thank you Renee’, this is a very timely question, as roses produce young soft growth and the weather produces ideal conditions for fungus i.e. warm days and showers, and suddenly your beautiful rose foliage is riddled with black spot, and all the leaves drop off. There would be a higher than usual fungal spore count as a result of the previous wet Autumn too. It is a good idea to vary your sprays so that fungal spores don’t build up a resistance. In cooler weather, lime sulphur is very effective. In wet weather use copper oxychloride with Pestoil. In windy weather we use Kelp powder, a very effective fundicide (which also kills aphids) which is non poisionous. Other good fungicides include Triforine, Yates Rose shield (which also kills aphids and mites) and Mancozeb. Depending on the weather, spray every ten to fourteen days. As soon as the weather turns hot and dry you will no longer have to spray for fungus (you may still have to keep an eye out for aphids and mites). Erica.
If you have a concern about your garden, please feel free to write to: “Let’s ask Erica”, c/- Barossa Nursery, Barossa Valley Way, P.O. Box 348, Nuriootpa, 5355.
Ms Hakala spends most of her time entertaining in her living area.

Trends in kitchen design - the choice is yours it is even more important to get everything right according to Barossa Cabinetmaker/Joiner, Thomas Lüdi . With more than 20 years experience in the manufacture of custom built kitchens and furniture, the Swiss trained tradesman said if you are thinking of getting a new kitchen there are some points you should consider. Firstly, think of the style of kitchen you would like. “Is it modern or traditional? Always bear in mind what type of house you have and what kind of space you would like to create. Have a look at magazines or the internet to get an idea of all the different styles of kitchens out there,” said Thomas. The next step is to contact a licensed professional who can lead you in the right Free measure and quote direction with planning. Personalised service “Today’s kitchen is all about convenience; drawers and doors are soft close, corner cabinets have easy accessible hardware and pull out pantries are space saving and very handy. All these gadgets you didn’t have ten years ago are getting more and more popular,” said Thomas. “Soft close hinges were a luxury but are E: enquiries@ludi-schutz.com.au now more common so the doors don’t slam. www.ludi-schutz.com.au You can’t take your frustrations out on your kitchen cabinets anymore! laughed Thomas. The look of your kitchen is important and it is often the most confusing part of designing a kitchen. “Not only do people have a selection of
Once purely a work area, these days the kitchen is the hub of the home where entertainment, living and family space are all part of a modern kitchen. It is the one room family use every day, often all at once, so it needs to withstand the most wear and tear. Given that the kitchen is such an integral part of the home,

many gadgets, there are more materials available now than ever, with a choice of laminate, vinyl wrap, solid wood, painted wood and glass doors,” said Thomas. “Customers have an endless choice of splash-backs with tiles, glass, pressed metal, stainless steel and granite available. “I recommend glass splash-backs for easy cleaning because you don’t have to scrub grout. “For a wow factor, a painted glass splash-back in a striking colour would be perfect with neutral doors. “Down lights underneath overhead cupboards can also create a nice ambiance, and with the use of LED lighting, it is an energy efficient alternative.” There is a large range of ovens and hotplates available, from large free-standing ovens with six burner hot plates and a wok, to the latest induction cook tops for a sleek look. European favourites are integrated fridges and dishwashers, along with built in coffee machines, steam ovens and microwaves. “They are becoming more popular in Australia,” said Thomas. For kitchen bench tops, Thomas said granite is a good natural product and quartz stone is a man-made alternative. He has even made a feature bench top using timber the customers had reclaimed from old wine barrels, which he said is a great talking point in that home. “Both are good choices for durability and are long lasting. “If you are on a budget and still want a granite look, you can get laminated bench tops with a full gloss finish that looks realistic.” “A timber kitchen is never really in the peak of fashion, but it’s never really out either,” said Thomas. “If it’s done properly, it seems to survive the different fashions. A stylish, well planned kitchen is timeless.”

As the weather warms up and the flowers begin to bloom, the garden is the ideal place to be. An important part of gardening is knowing the right tools to use and how to keep them clean and ready for use. Angaston Garden Society President, Mr John Short is no stranger to gardening tools in his role. Mr Short said the best way to ensure your tools anre kept clean and do not pass on any disease to plants is to sterilise them with any common disinfectant a few times a year. He said rust and damage can be prevented by keeping tools under cover when they’re not being used. The Angaston Garden Society’s 13 volunteers meet every Monday and spend a lot of their time in spring mulching hoeing and fertilising. “If we want Angaston looking good, it’s what we’ve got to do,” Mr Short said. Mr Short, who has been president of the society for four years, said his favourite thing to plant was roses and said special care should be taken to clean tools after planting them to avoid disease. “I like roses and since I’ve been president, we’ve put in three to four hundred of them. “They’re less maintenance and more economical with water.”

2011 Spring Home Ideas
Bursting with history Carol and Ken Farley of Angaston were surprised with all of the history they have been able to uncover since buying their Gawler Park Road home in 2008. The 100-acre property had been vacant for two years prior to the Farleys moving in, but there had been many owners since it had been built, dating back to the mid-1800s. Mrs Farley has been intrigued by the history of her house, and has spent a lot of time researching the previous owners. She believes the main house at Gawler Park was built in about 1870 and has had many owners including Mr William Green and Mr Thomas Radford Sage. The Sage family lived up to the grandiose of the house, with the wealthy residents hiring a butler, nanny and gardener. Other people, including the Angas, Collins and Salter families have owned the property, with the Thorn family owning it for the longest from 1935 to 1960. Mrs Farley said there are still people living in Angaston today who remember visiting the residence as children while it was owned by the Thorn family. Originally a fruit growing and winemaking property, small work sheds can be seen from the main house at Gawler Park. The property had also been set up for horses by previous owners. The house underwent a transformation in the late 1970s when a front section was built onto the house. The Farleys have rendered the front of the house to make it look like the rest of the house with a roughcast original finish and resurrected the veranda posts. Mrs Farley has tried to keep with the history of the building, researching colour schemes of the era the house was built and painting it burgundy, fudge and cream. She said the house and garden were quite
run down when they bought the property and took her six weeks to clean. “It was like a haunted house, it was so sadlooking,” she said. Mrs Farley said even though it looked like hard work to renovate, they could see the basic elements for a lovely house were there in the high ceilings and big rooms. Although the house has been completely transformed from the “haunted house” they purchased, Mrs Farley said it is still a work in progress. Gawler Park is the third house the Farleys have renovated, with Mrs Farley saying they both love renovating old houses. “We love seeing the before and after when we renovate,” she said. “My husband is extremely talented and gifted.” There isn’t much of a chance of the couple moving on to another house any time soon, with Mrs Farley saying she loves the house and the view the back veranda offers. “The birdlife here is incredible; we get a lot of native birds. “I feel so privileged to live here because there’s so much history. “I could not live anywhere but here, I just love it.” When they put a new roof on the house, Mr and Mrs Farley found five-and-a-half tonnes of charcoal above the ceiling that had been placed there for insulation. The four-bedroom house features four ensuite bathrooms, seven fireplaces and an open entry, which Mrs Farley said was ahead of its time with the original design. Mrs Farley said she could not estimate how much time they had put into the house over the time they had owned it. “We’ve only been here three years and we’ve done a lot to it. “But there’s still a lot we want to do.”

Simplicity is the best option A bright splash of colour on the walls could be the perfect way to liven up your home this spring. To achieve the best results Nuriootpa Painting Contractor, Mr Frank Varapodio suggests keeping it simple by sticking to a three-colour scheme in each room. “You can’t go wrong if you stick to three colours. Pick a colour, say, out of the curtains and change the room according to that.” Mr Varapodio said the most common mistake people made when re-painting a room was not doing the proper research. “You need to look at what you have already got in your home and work around it. “You can’t just choose a colour out of a magazine that looks good, because it may not match the style of the home.” He said, additionally, any major changes to the furnishings or décor must be made before deciding on the paint, to keep it matching. With many houses more than 50 years old in the Barossa, Mr Varapodio suggests owners restore them back to their original condition.
“There are houses in the Barossa that should be brought back to their traditional looks. It can be a challenge but sticking to the basic three-colour rule can make it work.” Alternatively, he said older homes could be “spruced up” and given a modern look by introducing feature walls. “Introducing colour with a feature wall can liven up a dull house,” Mr Varapodio said. “The colour depends on the furnishings and décor in the house, and you want something that is going to complement them. “Generally, you want to go in the same colour range, so with a neutral bright and light colour, like antique white, you could go a deeper brown for the feature wall.” Mr Varapodio said you could also match the feature wall to a colour already in the room, such as coloured pillows,
or a pattern colour in the curtains. “My wife introduced red bowls to our kitchen and we added a red feature wall, which worked really well.” He said adding a brush or sand finish to a wall could also make the room “pop”. “It is good to introduce these to small areas and putting clocks or photos over these walls can enhance them.” Mr Varapodio said there weren’t any set rules when painting a home, but there were a few simple things people could remember. “With a small room, dark colours tend to close it in, so use neutral colours such as antique white; it will give the room light. “Additionally, light ceilings will lift the room up and make them appear higher.”

Decorating with

Mrs Colleen Cailes has been renovating her Nuriootpa home for the past 11 years and she says she’s not done yet. “It really is never ending, there’s always something to do,” Mrs Cailes said. “Even if you get to the end of it, you’d have to start again.” A chore to a lot of people, Mrs Cailes can’t get enough of painting the interior of her home and started with the guest room. “I love painting, it’s not a chore,” she said. “I’ve done all of the interior painting and it’s very relaxing.” Although Mrs Cailes had done a lot of the painting work, she said she had worked out the colour scheme with her husband, Wayne. She chose boldly with a yellow hue, knowing she wouldn’t have to look at it in the guest room if she didn’t like it. Over the past twelve months, Mr and Mrs Cailes have done a lot of work, including reroofing and painting
Colleen Cailes and the family dog, Oscar. the exterior of the house. “There’s no comparison to when we started,” she said. Mrs Cailes’s favourite area of the house, featuring original fireplaces in most of the b e d r o o m s, i s t h e dining area.
“We spend a lot of our time in this room and all sit in here together.” Another area of the house the whole f a m i l y, i n c l u d i n g their children Narkia and Levi, spend time in is the theatre room. The theatre room,
otherwise known as the quirky room, houses the eccentric eBay finds from the family, such as the old movie posters. A car simulator used to play video games will be added to the room as soon as Mr Cailes is finished building it.

The house that Don built
Give your home a spring makeover with our range of custom made curtains, blinds and awnings
Most couples moving into retirement are looking to downsize, but not Nancy and Don Williams from Nuriootpa. Their original plan was to live in their twobedroom cottage, which Mr Williams built himself, but they decided to extend the house for more luxurious living. Don built the cottage in 1987, with the intention of renting it out but they decided to extend it to a three-bedroom house with a bigger living area six years ago when Don retired. They had downsized from their previous house, but the renovations then took the cottage to another level. “Don built it and we thought we may as well use it ourselves,” Mrs Williams said. The front of the house was the original cottage with two-bedrooms, which is now a large living area. “It was a bit small for us so we decided to get a bigger living area and we had to put the bedrooms somewhere else,” Mr Williams said. The old back wall is on the inside of the house and adds a rustic charm to the interior of the home. Don put his own hard work into the stonemasonry, having worked in the profession before he retired. He also did the tiling in the house, which adds to his other talents of concreting and bricklaying. He has worked on many projects in the region
for more than 55 years and his work can be found in many homes around the Barossa. The hand split stone in the home was sourced locally from Daveyston and features in several areas of the house. Mrs Williams, a former florist, has also put her own touches on the interior of their home. “I’ve had my hand in it too. Just as I’ve thought of things, away I went,” she said. “I like doing indoor decorations and I like fresh flowers and pot plants.” Mrs Williams said she was very proud of the work her husband had done on the house. Mr Williams said his favourite part of the house was the bedroom, which looks onto the porch, which is Mrs Williams’s favourite area. The couple, who have been married for 55 years, entertain many guests on the decking area, which has become an outdoor room that shades them from the elements. “It’s nice to have something you’ve done yourself,” Mr Williams said. Not only has Mr Williams built their retirement home, he has built six other houses around Nuriootpa from the ground up. Mrs Williams said although they are retired, she and Mr Williams aren’t exactly slowing down too much and enjoy the freedom and individuality they’ve been able to keep in their lives.

Save on bills with an underground house With many land-holders becoming energy conscious, it is common to see solar panels on roofs and the occasional wind turbine on their property. However, Mr Harry Schneider of Cockatoo Valley has gone one step further with a fully self-contained carbon neutral “underground” house. The house, made from thick concrete and heavy steel reinforcement, has been built into a hillside, and is sheltered with earth over the top and sides, while one side faces out into the sun. The house is powered by 14 solar panels and a wind turbine, and water is sourced from the many rainwater tanks on the property. Mr Schneider began building his dream house in 2004, developing the idea from a structure at his previous house. “I had a house on One Tree Hill Road with a pool and didn’t like the idea of running into the house to use the bathroom. “We decided to build a concrete bunker into the side of the hill, that way we could put a toilet, shower, change-room and all the chemicals for the pool in there,” he said. “When we went in there, we realised how cool it was in the summer and in winter it would keep the heat in, so I gradually developed the idea to build a house like that.” There are several underground houses in the Adelaide Hills area, and Mr Schneider contacted the house-owners to research into the building process before choosing the design. Subsequently, he learnt from their mistakes and developed a practical design from a housing catalogue. “I learnt a lot from a couple who had built a very primitive underground house and had a lot of trouble with water coming in – so much so they had to put a gutter on the inside of their house. “I learnt you can’t take shortcuts to save here and there,
or make any big mistakes, because once you’ve got dirt over the top, it’s a big job to dig it all away again.” Although, a few years after completion, Mr Schneider and his wife decided to extend with a second-storey sun-room, and a bulldozer was driven over the top of the building. The thick concrete and steel used throughout the entire house means it will last a lot longer than regular structures, and provides protection against the weather. A previously built underground house in the Adelaide Hills survived a bush fire; whereas a regular house would have burnt down when the bush fire tore through the area many years ago. The outside concrete walls were designed with built-in small bubbles to allow the room to aerate and ventilate. Ventilation pipes were built up through the soil to the top floor of the house to allow the exhaust fan air to be blown outside. Mr Schneider said because they wanted to blend in with nature, they didn’t plant any lawn or flowers outside the property. “We don’t have to water here, because we have creepers and things that grow all the time. “We have no lawn, because we want to blend in with the area, and I don’t want to be a slave to the garden.” Mr Schneider said if people were prepared to pay that extra cost initially, they would benefit from a house like this in the long run. He said if people were prepared to switch off and save power and do things like washing clothes according to the weather, the lifestyle would benefit them. “Even if you are on the grid, you can save from having a few solar panels, and it is so much easier these days with the subsidies available.”
CURTAINS AND PELMETS Not just a statement
Over the years there have been many changes in fashion and trends in the window and soft furnishing industry. Until recently the main concern for clients purchasing curtains has been privacy. As people become more aware of the increasing cost of heating and cooling and the ecological benefits of reduced power consumption, they are now turning to curtains and pelmets for their insulation properties. Recent industry research shows curtains and pelmets have the highest insulation properties of any window treatment. The insulation is more efficient than clear double-glazing and is comparable to a typical uninsulated wall (brick veneer, weatherboard, fibro or cavity brick). With the vast range of stunning fabrics

Spring Home Ideas A well-designed bathroom adds value to the home
Mr Sam Pansini, from Tiles for Life, Kapunda.
For many people, the bathroom is considered one of the most important rooms in the home and the place where most people begin and end their day. In terms of retail value, the design of a bathroom can significantly add to or devalue a house, so it is crucial to research before renovating. Although renovations can be exciting, Mr Sam Pansini, from Tiles for Life, Kapunda said it should not overshadow the research that needs to take place before the renovation begins. “Knowledge is power. You need to look at the renovation as an investment and do a bit of research before jumping in,” Mr Pansini said. He said with bathroom renovations,

communication with the trades-person before beginning the job could prove helpful. “You can get advice on the design concept, colour matching and the type of fixtures available. You want to choose things that not only suit the individual taste, but also the style of your home.” The bathroom is arguably the most utilized room in the house, so it is important to cleverly manage the space so there is enough room to move around. “The main idea is to create space in the bathroom; you don’t want it to be overly crowded,” he said. Mr Pansini said for smaller areas, a corner wall mounted sink could work better than a large bathroom basin. “It is important to utilize corner space. You can put a rack there for towels and minimize clutter by putting bottles and products into a corner caddy.” A spacious bathroom can look very inviting, however if the room is quite small, Mr Pansini said there were ways of creating the illusion of space. “You can create space by using glass or mirrors to create light. Busy borders on the wall can sometimes detract from the area, and the simplest walls are often the most effective at opening the room up,” he said. “Tiles can also be placed in a way that can make the room appear wider or longer.” Mr Pansini said at the end of the day after the research was complete; there were really no specific rules to follow. “There are no rules you have to follow regarding design and your imagination is the only thing that limits you.”
With the cost of electricity rising rapidly each year, home renovators should consider the impact on their heating and cooling bills by installing the correct window treatments within their home. Mrs Anwen Aukland of Gawler Colour World, Evanston, says correct window treatments in a modern home can act like insulation because summer heat and winter coldness are both transferred through glass windows. However, she says with the correct window treatments home owners can reduce these heating and cooling bills by up to 50%. She adds, “The impact of window treatments can be undervalued and often they have a massive impact on the presentation of a room. “It’s essential to spend time to choose the correct colour scheme and design. “Often new homes have more windows and entertainment areas where the window treatments become like a feature wall.” With 12 years experience in the industry, Anwen and Gawler Colour World are well experienced to advise anyone on their curtains, blinds, awnings and upholstery. When it comes to window treatments Anwen and her dedicated team can do virtually anything people ask of them. She added, “We provide all the blinds that are currently on the market. Curtains are certainly something we design and make a lot of and we make a lot of effort to ensure it fits the feeling and decor of the rooms. “The sort of thing we wouldn’t do is put something new in with something traditional. It won’t work in the wrong setting. “It is also important for us to visit the home to measure up and make recommendations for rooms. “Blinds are available in a roller range that block out the sun. There are also sunscreen roller blinds, venetian, timber, aluminium or PVC while vertical blinds are available in timber or fabric. “We have just taken on a new translucent range of vertical blind fabrics. We can also provide Roman blinds plus panel glide, cellular and pleated. “Curtains can come in a basic track with double pinch pleating to reverse pleats which has become very popular. “Ripple fold curtains are popular too and we can also provide a full range of padded pelmuts, valances right through to swags and tails.” Gawler Colour World provide a free in house measure and quote service which Anwen says is critical to the quality of work in providing the appropriate advice. Staff regularly travel within Gawler and to the Barossa, Mid North, Adelaide Plains, Two Wells, Balaklava and Kapunda. They have even done work at Black Springs and are currently doing work in Burra.
