AWARD-WINNING TEAM
The East Midlands Customer Care Team members reveal the secret to their success
Welcome to the summer edition of Foundations magazine. Firstly, I want to thank colleagues for their continued commitment and hard work over the past year. We have seen a challenging market across the financial year, and I am proud of the way we have faced this together to continue delivering exceptional service and the high quality sustainable new homes the country needs.
As we look ahead to the completion of our deal to become Barratt Redrow, we will work together throughout this time of transition to emerge as an even stronger organisation.
In this issue, we recognise the importance of charitable giving, which sits at the heart of our business, and celebrate the range of activities colleagues have taken part in to support charities that matter to them. We also celebrate donating £12 million to incredible causes since the Barratt Foundation was formed in 2021 – a truly incredible achievement. You can hear from Claire Jarvis, MD for North West, about her experience since joining Barratt last year, what success looks like to her, the best piece of advice she’s received and some she’d give to those starting out in the industry.
In addition, we spoke to our Division of the Year award-winning team, East
Midlands, about what this recognition means to them, changes they’ve been making to help the division go from strength to strength and any tips they’d share with other divisions.
As the leading national sustainable housebuilder, we share details of some of the partnerships we have to support us in building the homes the country needs, including with Citra for the private rental market and the RSPB to help nature and communities thrive.
Alongside these highlights, you will find news and stories from our divisions, as well as updates from the HR teams on our employee networks, Spotlight development programme, pulse survey results and refreshed recognition scheme. We also showcase some exceptional sites across the country which are creating thriving communities, and hear from customers about their experiences of buying with us.
I am grateful to all of you for your continued dedication and, as we look ahead to this next chapter in becoming Barratt Redrow, I am proud to be leading such a great team into another exciting year.

Looking to the future What’s new?
In March, Barratt Developments, Saint-Gobain and the University of Salford scooped Energy Project of the Year at the 2024 Edie Awards for its ground-breaking research at Energy House 2.0.
This came three months after the first results from the ground-breaking project. Launched in January 2023, the home indicated that the Future Homes Standard can be delivered at scale by 2025, providing key components and training are readily available.
The results focused on the fabric of two prototype homes (The Future Home from Bellway and eHome2 by Barratt), looking at the overall
performance, as well as walls, roofs and floors, and revealed that the buildings have stood up to the extreme climates we are experiencing now and which are expected to happen more frequently in the future due to climate change. Both homes, which were built using different methods, had a small difference of up to 8% between the anticipated performance when designed compared with the actual performance during testing in climatecontrolled conditions. This makes them among the most efficient homes that have been tested in research conditions.
New homes have a performance gap in the amount of heat they are
expected to lose under design versus what actually happens once built. This gap can be between 5% and 140%, according to data published by Leeds Beckett University. Our eHome2 prototype had a performance gap of just 3.9%, which means it would cost £88 a month to run compared with £250-£300 a month for a Victorian home.
The Times ran a feature focusing on the high performance of the prototype, describing it as “top of the class”, and that research results will help Barratt and other housebuilders to build low-carbon, energy-efficient homes at scale.
Women in Property announces new chair
Women in Property (WiP) announced that Jennifer Winyard, Senior Strategic Land Manager from Yorkshire West, has been appointed National Chair.
Jennifer joined WiP, a networking organisation that uses its platform to influence government, in 2007 and has taken on roles including Yorkshire & North-East branch Chair, Mentoring Ambassador and Student Awards Ambassador. As an experienced mentor, she supports fellow professionals through their RTPI and RICS APCs, as well as on the WiP
cross-discipline mentoring programme.
Jennifer said: “Encouraging girls to consider a career in property and construction has been a major focus for me throughout my professional life. My lived experience of this industry highlights the fantastic scope it offers across all sectors. There is still more to do to encourage more people, particularly girls and young women, to make it their future too. I want to help change mindsets and unlock the potential they offer.”
Jennifer will be in the post until 1 March 2025.

Going to great lengths
Adam Lopez, a Forklift Driver for Anglia, has defied all odds to become the fastest man to run a mile in a pool.
Adam, who was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes during a work medical, was trying to find ways to make his gym workouts more fun and intense. He loved weight training but had reached a plateau, so one day he started walking up and down the swimming pool.
After discovering there was a Guinness World Record for the fastest one-mile run in a swimming pool, he used it as motivation to improve his fitness. He then decided to apply to break the record when a fellow swimmer
complimented him on how quickly he could walk a length of the pool.
It took Adam 35 minutes and 24 seconds to run the 64 lengths of Nuffield Health’s 25-metre pool in Norwich, Norfolk, on Tuesday 23 April, beating the current record. The footage of his attempt will now be reviewed by Guinness World Records before it is certified.
“The pool is 1.25 metres deep, and the water comes up to around chest height, so it’s more like a trudged running motion than swimming,” says Adam, who was also raising money in aid of five-year-old Grace Howes, who has spinal muscular atrophy.
A mountain to climb
We’ve renewed our sponsorship for Hari Budha Magar, who was awarded an MBE in the 2024 King’s Birthday Honours list for his charitable work. A former corporal in the British Army’s Gurkha regiment, Hari became the first double aboveknee amputee to summit Mount Everest. Now he’s attempting to complete the challenge of climbing some of the tallest and most iconic mountains across the seven continents. He has already ticked off Everest (Asia), Mont Blanc (Europe) and Mount Kilimanjaro (Africa), and this year will attempt Denali (North America) and Puncak Jaya (Oceania). In 2025, he will try to climb remaining peaks Mount Aconcagua (South America) and Vinson Massif (Antarctica).
5 Star for 15 years
Barratt has been awarded the maximum five stars for customer satisfaction from the Home Builders Federation (HBF) for the 15th year in a row – the only national housebuilder to have achieved this.
The number of stars a housebuilder receives is based on whether customers would refer us to a friend – and top marks are achieved if companies receive a rating of at least 90% in HBF’s National New Homes Customer Satisfaction Survey.
This is an outstanding achievement for us and recognises that each of our teams puts the customer at the heart of everything they do.
Site Managers win
big
Congratulations to 89 of our Site Managers who have been named as NHBC Pride in the Job Quality Award winners this year.
Not only is this a fantastic achievement for our teams, it means that we retain our industry-leading position, with more of our Site Managers receiving awards than any other housebuilder for an incredible 20 years.
Pride in the Job is the only UK-wide competition dedicated to recognising Site Managers who achieve the highest standards in housebuilding, with winners selected from more than 8,000 Site Managers working on sites registered with the NHBC.
Congratulations once again to our Site Managers, their teams and partners!
We are the champions BARRATT UPDATES
Our 2022 ASPIRE graduate cohort not only raised a fantastic £120,667 for The Prince’s Trust Million Makers Project but also won two awards at the 2023 National Finals.
The team faced tough competition from Taylor Wimpey and Balfour Beatty but succeeded with its three initiatives – Inside Barratt’s Kitchen, Golden Giveaways and An Evening of Champions – and was rewarded with the Built Environment Sector
Champions Award for the highest total raised. They also picked up the Shoot for the Stars Award, which recognises a team that has grown throughout the competition and demonstrated unwavering passion to support young people.
In total, the 32 teams from companies across the UK raised a staggering £2,001,596 in 2023, which will be used to change the lives of young people through mentorships, career opportunities and business ventures.
Becoming Barra Redrow
Following the successful shareholder votes on the proposed Barratt Redrow combination, we now await the results of the CMA’s Phase 1 review, which will last 40 working days, until 8 August 2024. This is a standard part of the regulatory process for transactions of this nature to ensure that the combination won’t result in a lessening of competition in the market. If at the end of the Phase 1 review the CMA approves the combination, we will be able to take the final steps towards completing the transaction, which we expect to happen in the coming months. We will continue to keep colleagues updated. You can find out more, including the latest timeline and regularly updated FAQs on the dedicated page on Our Place.
Barra still leads the way in sustainable house building
In the 2023 NextGeneration Benchmark results, we received our highest score yet of 85% (10% higher than last year) and secured the top spot for a national housebuilder, coming second overall. We ranked first or second in health and safety, environmental site management, ecology, company strategy and governance, reporting, energy and carbon, and procurement. In addition to our Gold Award for scoring so highly (for the eighth year in a row), we also won the Crystal Award for transparency (for the fourth time) and the Innovation Award (for the third time) for our Energy House 2.0 project.
Earlier this year, Louise Ruppel joined the business as General Counsel and a member of the Executive Committee. Louise will play a key role in developing and executing our overall strategy, as well as managing legal risks and opportunities, with the Group Legal and Compliance Team continuing to provide legal advice and support across the business.

RSPB
This year we celebrate 10 years of partnership with the RSPB. To showcase the brilliance of our collaboration, let’s have a look back at some of our incredible achievements together:
• Every new community we build now has a variety of nature-friendly elements designed in. Using expert advice from the RSPB, we developed the Landscape Handbook that puts biodiversity and landscaping at the centre of our developments.
• Through our ‘Nature on Your Doorstep’ initiative, we’ve given customers and home owners inspiration and practical ways they can help nature whatever their outdoor space. Our customers and RSPB supporters love the top tips, expert advice and the YouTube channel we’ve created.
• We worked together to create an innovative and award-winning swift nesting box. So far, we’ve installed more than 6,000 swift bricks as we work towards our target of 7,000 installations by 2025.
• By installing swift bricks, as well as hedgehog highways, bat boxes and creating wildlife-friendly show home gardens, we are directly helping nature to thrive.
• Our flagship nature-friendly development called Kingsbrook in Aylesbury, developed in partnership with the RSPB and the local council,
Working together
Celebrating a landmark year of one partnership and some new partnerships, including an innovative mortgage product
shows what is possible when you prioritise nature. It’s good for nature, for people and for business. When finished, we will have built 2,500 homes in the most nature-friendly way possible, complete with orchards, sports pitches, 400 acres of public green space and a 250-acre nature reserve.
Asda
We’ve partnered with Asda to build 1,500 new homes, a new town centre and a flagship superstore in Acton on Asda’s Park Royal site in North West London.
A third of the new homes will be affordable, with sustainability at the heart of the site, providing significant biodiversity and ecology net gains if it wins approval. A large number of the apartments will utilise a landscaped podium above the new Asda.
The proposal, which is subject to planning approval, includes creating a new town centre for the local community at the heart of the Old Oak and Park Royal Development Corporation major regeneration area. It will feature a brand-new 60,000 sq. ft flagship Asda Superstore and up to 400 car parking spaces for customers.
This mixed-use redevelopment of an established store site is a first for Asda and represents one of our largest land deals of the last couple of years.
Springfield
We’ve agreed a deal with Scotland’s only listed housebuilder, Springfield, to jointly develop a 3,000-home village on the outskirts of Stirling.
Springfield has already driven the Durieshill village development through the design and planning stages, and will now continue the deal through us. The deal includes an initial sale of land to us, with subsequent sales tied to infrastructure investment as key development milestones are reached. The programme includes upgrades to roads, electrical supply works, and sewage works.

The Durieshill village (site mock-up visuals below), which spans nearly 600 acres, is one of the largest detailed planning applications for housing and community infrastructure to be approved in Scotland to date, with a gross development value of approximately £776 million.
Initial groundworks are expected to start later this year.
Citra
As part of the fantastic new community we’re building at Winnycroft Lane near Gloucester (pictured above), Citra Living have acquired 156 new homes for the rental market in Gloucestershire.
The new, high-quality, energy-efficient homes are a mix of two, three and four bedroom properties, with the first families expected to move in this summer.
The 420 homes are set within 15 acres of open space with nature-rich environments, including an orchard, play areas, sports pitches and allotments.
Our partnership with Citra Living Limited aims to bring forward much-needed new homes to the private rental sector more quickly. Since the partnership started, together we have brought more than 1,500 high-quality homes to the market across projects spanning Bedfordshire, Northumberland, Lancashire and the South West.
Steve Mariner, Sales and Marketing Director, said: “Winnycroft is an excellent development that showcases our ongoing partnership with Citra really well. It brings new sustainable homes to the private rental sector in Gloucestershire where they join a thriving new community ready for people to move in this summer.”
Own New Rate Reducer
We were the first housebuilder in the country to partner with Own New and to offer our customers the new Rate Reducer mortgage product.
Own New Rate Reducer works by giving customers the option to use incentive budgets, with contributions of 3% or 5% of the purchase price, to bring down their mortgage and reduce their monthly payments over a fixed term. This means customers can reduce their mortgage interest rate by up to 3.19%, saving on their monthly mortgage payments in the first two to five years.
Steve Mariner, Sales and Marketing Director, said: “By launching the Own New Rate Reducer scheme, we are helping more people to be able to afford a home. The scheme gives buyers the financial boost they need to get them onto the property ladder. They will be able to compare all the options available to them to make sure they get a mortgage product that is right for them and in their long-term financial interests.”

Every mum deserves a treat, from North Midlands
Remarkable Roman Villa complex discovered on site
At our Brookside Meadows site in Grove, Oxfordshire, a remarkable Roman Villa complex has been unearthed during construction.
The artefact-rich site in our Southern division sits on a landscape inhabited since the Bronze Age and includes a villa complex decorated with painted plaster and mosaics and a monumental hall-like aisled building with hints of internal colonnades. To date, four huge potential column or post bases have been uncovered in the aisled building that, at c. 500m2, is one of the larger examples of its type in Britain. This building is adjacent to a ‘winged corridor’ villa, a high-status domestic structure with a central range and flanking wings of rooms accessed by a central corridor. As the excavation is ongoing, the
Here’s what our divisions have been up to since the last issue
For Mother’s Day this year, North Midlands collected gifts such as slippers, socks, notepads and chocolates to donate to Tara’s Angels. The Nottingham-based charity was set up in memory of Tara Newbold – a mother of three who sadly lost her life in 2016 after being a victim of domestic violence. Tara’s family and friends decided to raise awareness and support for vulnerable women and children across the country living in refuges. The gifts were greatly received and made a world of difference to mums.
chronological relationship between the villa and the aisled building is still being determined, but it is almost certain the aisled building is later than the villa.
Beyond the impressive size and scope of the complex and the exceptional volume of finds, the site is also important for its evidence of activity continuing into the late fourth or even fifth century. The best example of this is a horse-headed Type 1B buckle dating to c. AD 350-450, notable for being associated not only with elites who were in – or wished to be associated with the prestige of –the Late Roman army, but also with some early AngloSaxon burials.
East Scotland participate in self-defence classes
East Scotland have now completed two self-defence workshops, with 14 colleagues learning from Fitandhappy. During the two-hour sessions, the instructors taught attendees techniques to handle an attack independently and how to keep responses calm and strategic. Colleagues praised the event as they walked away knowing how to avoid dangerous situations and defend themselves. “I found it very useful and fun as well! It made me more aware of what to pay attention to when I go out on my own, and more confident. It’s quite amazing how much I took out of just one short session; I’d definitely do it again if I have a chance!” said Katarzyna Mysakowska, Accountant. Land Buyer Jilly Davis added: “I really enjoyed the self-defence workshop – it was a great opportunity to use a lunchtime to learn something useful and handy. I was particularly impressed with some of the knacks they showed us, such as how to break someone’s grip!”
Oregon supports Valley CiDS
Local Derbyshire charity Valley CiDS, nominated by Orego’s brilliant cleaner Niki Brown, received a £1,500 donation on a site visit that started at their Saltpot Community Café, which offers a warm space and safe environment to all. They then visited Valley CiDS’s wood workshop, part of their Blend Youth Projects offering a range of youth work activities, support services and education provision for disadvantaged and marginalised young people in their local communities. The Turner Farm Project was the next stop – a cottage, farmhouse and outbuildings together with 48 acres of agricultural land. The merger of The Turner Educational Foundation with Valley CiDS presented a unique and exciting opportunity to develop a project offering a range of qualifications and learning pathways for young people disengaged from or facing barriers to mainstream education. Finally, they visited Men’s Shed, a project aimed at building community and camaraderie for both men and women who want to put their handy skills to use or gain new ones. The group has helped Valley CiDS rejuvenate parts of the farm and recycle old materials, while also working with other community groups in the area.
Help for Treetops Hospice
Oregon also recently supported Treetops Hospice, which was nominated by Phil Slater because his late father was cared for by the charity. Phil said: “The charity and all the wonderful, caring and committed staff helped my father through his terminal cancer and end of life treatment. To the present day, our family engage with the charity and still receive support for our terrible loss. Myself and others could not express our eternal gratitude.” Treetops Hospice provides nursing care and emotional support for adults and their families in Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire. All their services are provided free of charge, and are not means-tested, and it costs £4.3 million each year to run the hospice, of which only 30% is funded by the NHS and other national bodies.
Treetops also educates other hospices throughout the country on how to provide care and support within the patient’s home. You may have watched their episode of DIY SOS on BBC 1 in 2023, which saw the team building a brand-new children’s counselling and therapy centre for the hospice. The entire space is welcoming and helps put young visitors and their parents and carers at ease.

Hayes Village hosts delegates from Women in Property Hayes Village, located on the Former Nestlé Factory site, hosted delegates from Women in Property (WiP), an association promoting diversity within built environments. Hayes Village was specifically chosen for its diverse new community and exceptional links to London. Marta Kuriata, Senior Sales Adviser for West London, said: “Hayes Village is an outstanding development providing heritage, desirable space, greenery and exceptional connectivity to London, the UK and the world. In addition to the world-class transport links, residents are part of an extremely diverse newly formed community which respects differences and allows people to be themselves without fear. Being a woman in a male-dominated environment can be challenging at times. However, seeing and feeling the changes in society reflected within the organisation provides reassurance that equality is a genuine organisational priority. It has been empowering to be hosting WiP on our development and I look forward to more events of this kind in our Hayes Village community.”
The tour included a presentation of the site and the design of Block C in particular, as well as a visit to Truscon House and one of the show homes, followed by a general walk around the site.
Yorkshire West school visit
Yorkshire West paid a visit to a local school as part of their International Women’s Day and British Science Week celebrations. Year Two pupils enjoyed the educational talks from Lindsey Sills, Commercial Director, and Sarah Marsh, Design Manager.
The young students heard stories from Lindsey and Sarah about their careers within the construction industry, before an interactive workshop where the children had the opportunity to design and draw their own houses.
BD Living volunteering day
BD Living, our in-house wardrobe suppliers, recently carried out a volunteering day to construct and open a charity shop for Rainbows. The team spent the day erecting walls, building storage areas and brightening the place, ready for donations.
Rainbows is BD Living’s chosen charity of the year. They care for hundreds of families every year who have a baby, child or young person with a serious or terminal illness that means that their lives will be shorter than most. Their charity shops, open for donations, are one of the ways in which they raise funds to continue supporting children across the East Midlands.

Building communities
This issue, we take a look at developments from divisions around the country, including the winner of our 2023 Green Spaces Awards
Kings Chase (Southampton)
We paid a visit to Kings Chase in the market town of Romsey, Hampshire – a dual branded development of 275 new homes completed in 2022. Kings Chase is a diverse community, with a mix of one to five bedroom homes and a host of community facilities right on the doorstep.
The development achieved a Great Places Gold Award in 2023 as well as being selected as the Overall Winner for the Green Spaces Awards, celebrating Barratt’s commitment to the principles of good landscape design, implementation and appropriate management.
Kings Chase is a fantastic example of how we are putting our purpose and values into practice. Building a strong community was at the forefront of the scheme. Julian Jones, Development Director at Southampton, says: “The land had been allocated in various Local Plans for more than 30 years to deliver a sporting hub for Romsey. Over
Facilities at Kings Chase
a period of months, the division held numerous exhibitions and presentations with local sports clubs, groups and other stakeholders to determine the optimum solution for the community. Housing was never the driver (but it would be the enabler) and with it came a long list of community benefits the scheme could deliver.”
The opportunity to walk, relax, play, exercise and grow food at Kings Chase is key to enhancing residents’ health and wellbeing and creating a sense of community, while living in close proximity to nature. There has been sympathetic retention of high value landscape features and some outstanding areas for biodiversity delivered, with great attention to detail. Over 44 acres (64%) of the site is green, including public open space, woodland, sports pitches and allotments.
The division hopes to secure Detailed Planning consent in September 2024 for phase two of the development, comprising up to 309 homes and further allotment provisions.
• New football, rugby and hockey pitches designed with Sport England, including 4G and sand-based astro pitches with floodlighting.
• State-of-the-art sports pavilion with changing facilities, dance studio and gym, bar, catering and function space available for community use.
• A new home for Romsey Rugby Club (so they no longer need to share facilities with the Cricket Club) and Romsey Hockey Club.
• Allotments.
• Nature conservation area accessed via a boardwalk.
• Multiple play areas and fitness trail.
• Parkrun route.
Pocklington (Yorkshire East)
Wolds Way and Stewarts Reach are the marketing names for a dual branded development by our Yorkshire East division, which has recently started construction. Situated on the edge of the popular market town of Pocklington at the foot of the Yorkshire Wolds in the East Riding of Yorkshire, it is within easy commuting distance of the city of York. The scheme includes 380 homes and features community
allotments, a play area and orchard. The site is split in two by an existing water course, to be enhanced as part of the proposed development. A lack of capacity in the local gas network has led the division to investigate alternative heating sources. This has resulted in the use of air source heat pumps, backed up by PV panels and an increased build specification, with 150mm cavities and full fill insulation.
Edinburgh (East Scotland)
East Scotland is constructing a dual branded development of 318 homes: Barratt @ West Craigs, phase two (95 Barratt plots) and West Craigs Quarter (223 David Wilson plots) to the west of Edinburgh city centre. This forms part of the West Craigs Masterplan, an overall development of 1,700 units, which includes a mix of private and affordable homes, a primary school, civic space, retail units and two new parks. The scheme, which
is split into three character areas, incorporates a number of predetermined factors, including the Urban Design Framework, site infrastructure and sustainable drainage requirements. The landscape strategy has a requirement for native plant species, including trees, shrubs and hedging. New active travel routes will link the development to the wider area and viewing corridors have been created towards Castle Gogar.
Whaley Bridge (Manchester)
Manchester is constructing 107 homes at Midshires Meadow in Whaley Bridge, in the High Peak district of Derbyshire. Situated on the River Goyt, the town dates back as early as the 13th century and has evidence of prehistoric activity, including early Bronze Age standing stones and burial sites. The development offers a range of three, four and five bedroom homes with
stunning views of the surrounding countryside. The location is as convenient as it is serene, with links by car and train to Buxton, Macclesfield and Manchester, and the beautiful Peak District National Park on the doorstep. The scheme includes the retention of many existing trees and incorporates habitat features such as bird and bat boxes.
The big interview
Claire Jarvis
Claire Jarvis has had a connection to new-build homes since she was a child and joined us in July 2023 as Managing Director of Barratt and David Wilson Homes North West
Where did you grow up?
I was born in Ayrshire in Scotland. When I was nine years old, we moved to the North East – this is where my relationship with new-build homes began. I grew up on three consecutive Bellway developments in the North East and then the North West, where I moved to aged 21. They even featured our family in a PR release – once, twice, three times a Bellway homeowner! Around the time of my move to the North West, the Sales Advisor recommended I apply for a Sales Advisor role and the rest is history.
You’ve previously held roles at similar iorganisations – how will these experiences contribute to Barratt?
One of Barratt’s strengths is its people and their long service and loyalty, which is not the case with every housebuilder. Having colleagues join from competitors offers a different dynamic and a different way of approaching things. After spending 11 years at Redrow, there are some real similarities with Barratt – they both put the customer at the heart of everything they do. This is something I have focused on since
“My main aim is to ensure we have a happy, motivated team that achieves our targets and moves up the KPI league tables. I’m very competitive!”
becoming Managing Director to ensure we are a consistent five-star division.
What has been the most challenging moment of i your career to date?
I started my first Managing Director role at Redrow on 30 March 2020 just as we went into the Covid-19 lockdown. My main priority was making sure we kept everyone safe and then, when the time came, to remobilise our build, sales and customer teams to ensure we could move our customers into their homes while providing excellent customer service.
And the highlight?
There are so many highlights, but the biggest highlight is when I see colleagues whom I have mentored or helped guide in their careers go on to develop and progress.
What attracted you to this role withiBarratt?
I have always admired Barratt for its strong leadership, consistent five-star status and its sustainability credentials. I can’t think of a better place to continue to develop and further my career. I feel like I have been here for a lot longer than I have and settled into the role and the company quickly. Everyone across the business has made me feel very welcome.
What does success at Barratt look like toiyou?
My main aim is to ensure we have a happy, motivated team that achieves our targets and moves up the KPI league tables. I’m very competitive!
What’s the best piece of advice you ever ireceived?
Make time to have one-to-one meetings with your team. This is something I have always done since becoming Managing Director and the team and I both benefit from having that time in the diary.
What advice would you give to someone starting itheir career in the industry?
There are so many opportunities in the industry – if you want to further your career, you need to drive your own development. Make sure you network and build your brand and, when the time comes, make sure you take the opportunities.
What do you like to do in your spare time?
I enjoy training in CrossFit and became a CrossFit Level 1 Trainer a couple of years ago. I also recently competed in my first HYROX event [where participants run 1km, followed by one functional workout station, repeated eight times].
What are you reading at the moment?
I’ve just finished reading Can’t Hurt Me by David Goggins. It’s an amazing memoir of his life overcoming adversity to become a Navy SEAL and ultra endurance athlete. It’s about mental toughness and pushing past our limits.

We caught up with the East Midlands Customer Care Team, who were recently awarded the National Award for Customer Service in recognition of their valuable work
What does your team do?
Our priority is to provide a high level of customer care, and we build a strong rapport with each of our customers by managing our own sites, attending site forecast meetings to gain early knowledge of potential unhappy customers as well as covering general site information. We use NHBC Satisfaction Surveys and the iCare system to track customer feedback; we have also introduced nine-month customer journey calls, which allow us to introduce ourselves and gain an insight into the customer’s journey with
us. There’s also an element of data management, as we are responsible for making sure that site teams supply key documents such as Gas and Electrical Installation Certificates and Energy Performance Certificates.
What does a typical day look like for
the team?
We start by following up on any outof-hours issues and taking care of any emergencies quickly and efficiently, then move on to liaison with contractors and responding to customer emails, calls and requests. We have daily figures which are
Dream team
Claire Ashmore, Customer Care Manager, shares the team’s recipe for success
Although we face daily resourcing challenges, I believe that the team is highly effective and focused. Our commitment to process compliance, coupled with our desire to do well, produced the results needed to win the award. That said, there was a little disbelief when we won, and it was certainly a ‘wow’ moment as we were not aware that there was a national customer care award! My advice for other teams would be to believe in yourself, and always follow processes and structure.

shared with us each morning to keep us updated on our performance, and using those we aim to hit our targets by the end of the day. We feel that we perform well as individuals, but also as a team.
Congratulations on winning the National Award for Customer Service! What does winning mean to you and the team?
It’s a huge achievement and makes us all feel proud on an individual level. We feel that we have been noticed for what we do, and that we are making a difference with our work. We celebrated our win with breakfast cobs all round!
Is there anything you implemented in the last year that you think helped you win?
The nine-month customer journey calls were a new tool for us and have been beneficial. The planner that we use for works to be booked has become more structured and efficient, with timings and locations added, which is thanks to Andy Stirk, Senior Customer Care Technician.
One specific initiative launched in the last year is our customer care clinic, which we first set up at Thorpebury, one of our more challenging sites. We now have plans for another at Market Warsop. These clinics provide an opportunity for us to meet and greet our customers in person and let us build a more personal rapport with them. It also allows us to walk the site, which means we have a greater understanding of it and can better visualise it when dealing with any issues or complaints.
What advice would you give to other teams hoping to be considered for this award?
Always listen to the customer and try to empathise with them. It’s really important to gain a thorough understanding of the customer’s issue and to discuss it with them in as much depth as possible, either on the phone or by email. Try to be as informative and knowledgeable as possible; we do our best to review and fully understand every customer’s journey with us.
Close collaboration
Anna Branco, Customer Care Administrator, describes how working closely with sites has boosted team morale
We recognise that structured work and processes bring positive results and efficiency, but there is always room for improvement. It’s a constant learning curve. Over the past year, communication with site teams has significantly improved and a feeling of true partnership has developed, allowing for strong teamwork. This has led to greater work satisfaction for our team, and we feel motivated to keep progressing and maintain that high level of performance.
My top tip for other teams would be to establish your priorities whilst remaining flexible, so that you can adapt as needed. And listen, both to your customers and your team!

Caring in the community
The latest updates from The Barra Foundation, which is making a difference to worthy causes thanks to your efforts
Making a difference
This year, The Barratt Foundation celebrated donating over £12 million to more than 1,000 charities since its launch in 2021. Of this total, £6.8 million was received by our national partners, including The Outward Bound Trust, Whizz Kidz, Place2Be, Bookmark, Magic Breakfast, Refuge and the Lighthouse Construction Industry Charity. The remaining £5.1 million has benefitted charities at a local level through The Barratt Foundation, local Community Fund and matched funding for employees and divisions raising money for their favourite charities.

Big Barra Cleanup
In April, we launched our first mass litter pick in partnership with CleanupUK. In just two weeks, more than 430 employees collected over 500 bags of litter.
Tina Bains, Company Secretary and Barratt Foundation Trustee, said:
“It has been fantastic to see how Barratt employees across the business have engaged in the Big Barratt Cleanup this spring. Together we have collected over 500 bags of rubbish in our local areas, which will have a positive impact on the environment and where Barratt builds. I really enjoyed volunteering with the team at Bardon to collect 37 bags of rubbish in just an hour. A huge thank you to everyone who got involved.”

Magic Breakfast
Divisions have been busy taking part in activities for Magic Breakfast. Earlier this year, divisions from Aberdeen to Exeter took part in the Great Big Breakfast to raise more than £3,000 to provide healthy and nutritious breakfasts in partner schools.
Colleagues from East London and Southampton headed to the classroom to talk about working at Barratt as part of Career Aspiration sessions at Magic Breakfast partner schools. These events were a fantastic opportunity for students to gain an insight into the world of work and life at Barratt.

Well done to the 20 Barratt colleagues who took part in the London Marathon to raise more than £35,000 for Whizz Kidz (without matched funding). Pete Ballantyne and Lewis Allwood from South Wales raised a whopping £15,742 for Marie Curie – an exceptional effort for a very special cause. Get involved in the Book Drive for Bookmark Reading Charity
As children grow, their reading abilities and tastes naturally change, so books once loved in the past may now be sitting on a shelf. This September, we’re launching Book Drive for Bookmark and encouraging employees to pass on books so they can be enjoyed by more children. Every book donated will be gifted to a child in one of Bookmark’s partner schools, women’s groups, prisons and food banks. Look out for more information on how you can get involved.
Last year, GSC Bardon tempted colleagues with an array of delicious treats to raise money for Magic Breakfast. Following on from their success, the Great Barratt Bake Off for Whizz Kidz is coming this autumn and we’re inviting all employees to take part.
Look out for more information in the coming weeks about how you and your division can get involved.
Matched funding
Don’t forget that The Barra Foundation offers matched funding, with £12,000 available for each division and £1,000 per individual. Employees who have taken advantage of this include Carys Griffiths and Ryan Donovan from South Wales, who trekked to Mount Toubkai in Morocco for Velindre Cancer Care, raising a total of £5,083 (each receiving £1,000 matched funding); Kristina Quinn from GSC raised £825 for The Little Princess Trust with a sponsored haircut; Ken Carey from Yorkshire West jumped out of a plane to raise £680 for Yorkshire Air Ambulance; Ben Allan from Cambridgeshire trekked to Everest Base Camp to raise £2,539 for Little Miracles; and Neil Milburn from North East trekked the Sahara desert to raise £2,200 for the Love Hope Strength Foundation. Each amount was matched by The Foundation (up to £1,000).

In this issue’s HR update, we take a look at our Catalyst Programme, what you told us in the latest pulse survey results, our new HR Hub and our refreshed Employee Recognition Scheme
“If I could sum up the Catalyst Programme in one word, I would say: inspiring”
What is the Catalyst Programme?
The Catalyst Programme is a support programme designed to help our female colleagues navigate a successful career in our business.
After six years of running Catalyst, we know that to create an inclusive culture where everyone can thrive, we need to provide focused support to underrepresented groups, giving us more balanced and diverse teams that allow everyone in our community the freedom to be themselves.
What has happened this year?
We were thrilled to kick-off the 2024 cohort in January with 105 female colleagues, our largest cohort yet!
The delegates are now halfway through their 12-month programme and have recently completed the programme’s focal module, ‘The Art of Seeing Yourself’. Delegates take two days to step out of their day-to-day roles and focus on both their personal and professional development to enable them to be the best they can be.
Here is what Abby Thomas from West London had to say about her experiences so far: “Personally, I feel Catalyst has changed my mindset and given me the tools to start seeing challenges as opportunities to grow. It challenged my thinking and encouraged me to utilise my skills to maximise my potential, both within the workplace and outside of it, while also providing the opportunity to expand my network further afield within the business.”

Pulse survey
Sharing how you feel in the pulse engagement survey
Back in April, we made the decision to conduct a Group-wide pulse survey for the first time to see how we’ve progressed on our key Group focus areas since the last full survey in September 2023. We also took this opportunity to include three questions on Barratt Redrow to understand how colleagues feel about this and whether
there’s anything further we can be doing at a Group level to ensure our communications are regular, informative and consistent.
From the pulse survey, we had an engagement index of 78.9% with 67% of colleagues responding and sharing their views. We also received almost 4,000 comments on our Barratt Redrow journey. All comments were read and future communications and business updates will incorporate this valued feedback.

Success stories
Given
that our customers are
at the heart of our business, we thought it would be nice to showcase some recent customer journeys
Everything we do is for our customers, so this issue we’re taking a look at how one West Country woman halved her energy bills by moving to a new build and how a young family was finally able to get on the property ladder.
An affordable dream home Saltash based Jo Deacon, a proud resident of our new Treledan development, is excited to share her experience of moving to an energy efficient new-build home. Jo took advantage of several offers from Barratt Homes when she made her purchase in 2023, including the Key Worker Deposit Contribution Scheme, which she was offered as a Special Educational Needs teaching assistant. The scheme enabled her to purchase her dream home with her dog, Fred, after Barratt contributed towards her deposit. Jo emphasises the invaluable support she received from Barratt Homes’ customer care teams and on-site personnel: “Nothing is too much trouble for them,” she says. When asked the reason for her move, Jo explains: “Downsizing was a big
factor. In my old four-bedroom family home, heating all that space for one person got really expensive.”
Recognising the importance of reducing her carbon footprint and minimising utility costs, Jo was impressed by the modern heating systems and insulation in her new three-bedroom Barratt home. Since moving in, she has seen a massive decrease in her energy bills, with gas and electric expenses more than halving from £250 per month to a mere £100.
Nicki Reid, Sales Director at Exeter, comments: “I’m delighted that Jo is loving her new Barratt home and already making big savings on her energy bills. Every new home we build has been designed with the future in mind, using innovative design and smart technologies to make them more economical and comfortable to live in.”
First-time buyers’ bliss
Jacob Pendlebury, an Electrician, and Eily Pendlebury, a Deputy Manager at a private nursery, have moved into their brand-new three-bedroom Moresby style home at
Lancaster Gardens with their dog, Alfie, and have since welcomed Harry, their first child.
Jacob says: “It feels great to finally have a home we can call our own. We had wanted to make the move onto the property ladder for some time, which Barratt Homes and our hard work saving each month have made a reality.
“From start to finish, Barratt Homes has been fantastic. We were updated regularly during the building process and the move itself ran very smoothly with no hiccups on the way.
“As soon as we saw our house, we knew we were home. It is detached, a corner plot, and the style and layout of the Moresby was really impressive. Knowing that this is now our own home where we are raising our little boy feels amazing.
“Lancaster Gardens is the perfect place for us. It’s in a beautiful, rural area on the outskirts of the village, but with plenty close by. The community is growing by the day and is extremely warm and friendly. Our closest neighbours have become especially close friends.”

Sean O’Regan was named runner-up in the Large Builder Category at the NHBC Pride in the Job Supreme Awards earlier this year. He was one of our 96 successful Site Managers across the business who won a NHBC Pride in the Job Quality Award last year and has once again won an award in 2024. Here, Sean shares his experiences, what it takes to be an award-winning Site Manager and the efforts of the team he works with.
How did you get into the industry and become an award-winning Site Manager?
I started in the industry in 1998 and wanted to go into an apprenticeship, and Barratt Manchester gave me that opportunity. After three years of my apprenticeship with Barratt, I was selfemployed as a Joiner for a year and after that I became an Assistant Site Manager, before becoming a Site Manager in 2006.
The last word
We spoke to Sean O’Regan, Senior Site Manager
at Waldmers Wood in
our Manchester division
When did you win your first NHBC award?
I won my first Pride in the Job Award in 2011 and since then I’ve won 22 awards through the NHBC Pride in the Job Awards programme – 12 Quality Awards, seven Seals of Excellence, two Regionals and this year I was runner-up in the Supreme Awards.
What does winning a Pride in the Job award mean to you?
It means the world to me. I have the drive and I want to win the awards each year. In 2012 I missed out because complacency had set in, so I’ve been driven to win an award every year since then.
What’s the secret to your success?
It’s having a good team around you, and good support of the company, which is massive. I always class it as similar to being a football manager, you need good
“The team have got to be with you all the way through to drive the highest standards of quality”
people in each position, from Forklift Driver and Assistant Site Manager to Bricklayers and Groundworkers – and everyone else who’s involved. They all play a massive role in helping you to win the awards.
How do you ensure high levels of quality on site?
The team have got to be with you all the way through, at each stage, to drive the highest standards of quality. Everything’s got to be right, and everyone’s got to be with you.
What advice would you give to anyone aspiring to win a Pride in the Job Award?
Don’t get complacent and keep going – even if you don’t win your first award, keep going. If you get knocked down, keep going. And keep on top of your trades, as they are so important at all the key stages.
Could you be our next winner?
