As part of the Arnheim Mode Fashion Biennale in the Netherlands, Archi-Tectonics worked with renowned fashion designer Siki Im to create an exhibition pavilion envisioned as a translation of fashion into architecture. By disassembling a men’s suit jacket the resulting components are taken into Maya and manipulated into a series of pavilion spaces, a reverse tailoring. A pattern for the right sleeve is joined with a collar element to create a series of three display stands. A jacket breast template is joined with a cuff to create a sitting and viewing pavilion for projection of fashion shows.

The fabrication method also became a reinterpretation of tailoring techniques. Concrete canvas, a material used primarily in the construction of rapidly deployable bomb shelters, is comprised of cement sandwiched between a layer of cloth and a layer of water proof rubber. Coming in rolls, concrete canvas can be worked with and detailed like fabric until wetted when it then becomes a thin concrete shell. Here the fabric was stretched and bolted together over a welded aluminum frame. Visually the pavilion appears to be made of fabric from a distance while maintaining the tactile qualities of concrete when touched.

Ports 1961 SH, a 2750 sqft fashion store located within the heart of the Shanghai Bund district, was commissioned to further the brand identity first developed by Archi-Tectonics for the Harvey Nichols Boutique store in London, Opened Spring 2010. Inspiration for the store interior came from a mix of influences important to both the Ports Brand and the Bund area in general. Natural “organic” materials utilized in a raw form, which can be seen throughout the Ports line, were combined with inspiration taken with the international shipping history and Art Nouveau styling which imbued the city of Shanghai as a whole.

The interior of the space is comprised of two contrasting elements. A rough milled wood wall liner which is reminiscent of both a boat hull and the rough outer shell of an oyster is set against two pearly white display elements. The outer liner is of milled salvaged wood, rough finished with a subtle brushed silver finish. Twisted hanging rods in a nickel chrome finish hang continuously along this liner creating a contrast between the subtle lines of the suspended clothing and the roughness of the back surface and lower display platforms. The pearly white central display elements, milled from fiber reinforced gypsum, contain hanging mannequins and a chandelier suspended from nickel chrome chains. These slowly move and twist accentuating the fluidity of the cloths as the store’s customers move past. Custom designed nickel chrome table organically arranged around illuminated perforations within the display platforms are dispersed throughout the space.

Located on the Upper West Side of Manahattan the 1,320 sqft Eisen Penthouse was envisioned as an intersection between large furniture elements and architecture. Thickened, articulated wall surfaces bend and fold throughout creating functional multipurpose spaces and storage elements. An articulated epoxied central wall divides the master bedroom from the living room space. Glass fronted closets ďŹ ll the thickened wall on the master bedroom side while shelving with integrating lighting and storage are located on the living room side. Within the master bedroom a Chelsea gray epoxied surface ties together a small desk surface with the bed. Separating the kitchen from the living room, a folded wall transitions from a closet to a breakfast bar to the oven cooktop.

The Central Plaza towers anchor the center most site of the newly developed Al Sowwah Island adjacent to Abu Dhabi. Containing offices, a five star hotel, high end condominiums, and several stories of ground floor retail the 4,000,000 sqft mixed use development was to be a landmark and focal point for the new district.

Taking inspiration from Stibnite crystal formations, each tower fragments in response to site conditions, orientation, and program. Skylobbies which fall between the various mix use functions track up both towers and contain ancillary programmatic functions such as swimming pools, restaurants and conference areas. The base of the tower tapers out and fractures to form shaded ground level retail oors in Souk like environment. Skylights and openings up where the fracturing occurs create unexpected oblique views up the sides of the tower from the interior spaces.

The mixed use Holon city center takes its inspiration from the surrounding sand dunes from which Holon takes its name. The sculpted wind worn lines of the dunes are used as inspiration for the intertwining lines of pathways and skylights which make up the retail base and music center. The main theaters of the music center and partially recessed along the northeastern corner of the site in order to allow for a lower street presence. The spherical volumes of the theaters are oated under the perforated outer shell such that their masses can be felt in their entirety

At the bottom portion of the tower the sculpted base fragments and tracks up the tower forming a series of ancillary oors and mezzanine spaces. A wind scoop on the northern facade distributes fresh cool air to the various oors via a series of wind tubes which penetrate the building mass. A double skin facade on the southern facade collects solar radiation and assists in accelerating the ow of cool air. Stair and elevator cores located along the east and west facades protect interior spaces from harsh morning and evening solar gain.

Located in the Landmarked Chelsea neighborhood of NY, the Chelsea townhouse was a gut renovation of 3400 sqft brownstone with a new 550 sqft rearyard addition. Originally containing two units the townhouse was converted into a single dwelling with an office and nanny’s room on the lower level and a kitchen, dining room, and living room on the ground floor. The second floor contains a master bedroom suite with private terrace. Two additional bedrooms and a media room are located on the third floor. The rear yard addition was conceived as an independent piece of garden furniture creating a light airy transition point between the interior office and kitchen and the outdoor patio. The patio itself is envisioned and detailed as an additional room blurring further the transition from the interior to the exterior of the townhouse.

Naturally finished IPE hardwood, salvaged from ships in Indonesian, is inlayed within a blackened steel frame at the rear façade. The entire structure was fabricated and welded together on site. Full height pivot doors off of the master bedroom suite and office open to create unobstructed connections to the rear yard.

The MCF academy is a school and orphanage developed in conjunction with the Macdella Cooper foundation. Located outside of the capital city of Monrovia the MCF academy was set up to house, feed, and educate over 200 orphans, victims of the recent civil war. Sustainable Village - The academy was envisioned as a sustainable village. Educational buildings, dining facilities and dormitories are sited around green courtyards and outdoor play spaces. Each of these has a separate educational function ranging from gardens to grow food to solar panels and wells. All of this creates a community where daily life is directly linked with healthy living and education.

MCF Academy
Architecture – The academy buildings are constructed of locally sourced materials arranged to maximize architectural impact and create a friendly non-institutional feel. The main floor structures are cast concrete with a perforated wall infill created by embedding clay drainage pipes within concrete grout. Roof structures are butterfly roofs pitched to the center to collect rainwater while maximizing clearstory openings for ventilation. Large overhangs are positioned to minimize the summer sun while allowing for thermal gain during the winter months. Locally sourced IPE wood makes up the paths ways and wood slat screening seen throughout the buildings.

The 32,500 sq ft 33 Vestry Street Condominiums, located in the landmark district of Tribeca, are a reinterpretation of the craftsmanship and materiality of the neighborhood, as well as the apartment building housing type as a whole. The front and rear façade take on different detailing in response to their context. The front façade is made up of a mix of translucent and solid marble panels, which pixelates the street façade taking on major lines from the surrounding buildings, while creating a sense of privacy at the interior of the units. The translucent marble gives off an unexpected luminescence to the interior of the apartment during the day, while supplying a warm glow to the street at night. The rear façade is made up of large panes of clear glass recessed within staggered balconies. The staggering of the balconies creates private, protected gardens on the south end of each unit. The nine story building only contains seven units. The bottom three floors are comprised of two triplexes; floors four through seven each contain one large unit of around 3500 sq ft, the top two floors and roof area are occupied by a generous penthouse. The size of the units and staggering of the rear façade create the impression of each unit is an independently stacked Villa, rather than a traditional unit in an apartment building.

The Ports 1961 Paris Flagship store was the third store design prepared by Archi-Tectonics. Under new management, Ports worked with Archi-tectonics to develop a new store brand and identity which carried over much of the detailing used within both the Shanghai and Harvey Nicoles stores while creating a more adaptable interior space to display the Ports line. A grand sweeping circular stair in a generous double-height space was the first design move introduced. Spaces on the first and second floors unfold around the sweeping movement of the stairs, designed in a solid sand-colored steel set against a golden backdrop in venetian ribbed patterned plaster installed by Signature Murale, Paris. The ground floor has delicate 3D wall patterns in venetian plaster, forming large bands which frame the Ports Collection in a subtle way. The many recessed niches combine glass surfaces with mirror backing with real mirrors, which allows Ports products to “float” in space.

The Brewster Carriage House was a 33,000 sqft mixed-use development of a former factory space in the heart of New York’s Little Italy. The program included three ground floor commercial spaces, a large restaurant within the cellar and under-sidewalk vault space, and four floors of high end residential condominiums. Due to past fire damage the existing floor loads were unsuitable for either commercial or residential occupancy resulting in a complete gut renovation the need for a new circulation core. Every effort was made to reuse building materials throughout the project as a whole. The fire damaged wood beams were salvaged and milled to form radiator enclosures, window seats, and wood feature walls within the condominiums. A large Blue stone slab used set within the sidewalk for the original carriage entry was saved and utilized as the floor for the fine dining vestibule within the the cellar. A large conference table was constructed within one of the commercial spaces from the old floor of the freight elevator. A semi-intensive green roof is utilized in conjunction with Ipe decking to create private outdoors space for both penthouses. Shard like glass bulkheads fold out from the interior space creating both visual and spatial connections between the various levels of the penthouses and the roof level.

Developed by the owner of the Brewster Carriage House Condominium building in Conjunction with Frank Roberts, former manager of the Rose Bar, and Craig Hopson, former executive chef of Le Cirque. Inspiration for the restaurant level is taken from the detailing of the original Brewster carriages. A series of arches, reminiscent of carriage interiors, creates a sense of privacy over the main dining area. Constructed of lacquered metal angles with a bent walnut and cast glass infill the arches are a modern interpretation of traditional construction techniques. Salvaged and repurposed materials are used throughout both the market and restaurant levels. Tiles and cast iron windows imported from London complete the kitchen wall. Old blue stone slabs salvaged from the original building renovation create a waiting area outside of the private dining room area. Marble slabs salvaged from a farm yard garden are cleaned and utilized as cladding around the market bar.

Iconic Tower Proposal including Museum and Observation Platform Taiwan, China Competition Designer in conjunction with Thomas Barry of Opera Studio
The tower, while functioning as a landmark and observatory for the city, also serves as an exemplary green building with an educational aspect. A series of sloped urban farms sit at the center of the tower, irrigated by grey water and rainwater collected on site. The design takes advantage of an otherwise wasted resource, a 300 meter tower structure, and utilizes it to grow food for area residents. The farm oors are sloped to replicate the indigenous sloped farms of Taiwan, but also to allow for sunlight to penetrate the tower for plant growth. The sloped farms allow for the creation of a continuous path from the top to the bottom of the building. Visitors will have the option to hike down the building, starting from the observatory at the top of the building, proceeding through the farm levels, and ďŹ nally ending at a lower level museum and cultural center.

The concept for the design of this tower, located on an extremely small site in the South Seaport Area of Manhattan, started with the rethinking of the role of the skyscraper in the city. With a mixed-use program of commercial, residential, and hotel space, the design became an exercise in balancing public and private space. This balancing was achieved through the introduction sky lobbies at regular intervals throughout the tower. These function to compartmentalize the tower system-wise [mechanical and infra-structural] while giving greater transparency at these levels, breaking up the large monolithic shape into a beautifully fragmented volume. The sky lobbies provide functions such as restaurant & park [public space], gym and pool, screening room and meeting rooms, wine cellars and tasting lounges.

Located in Shaanxi Province of Yulin, the Yulin Culture and Arts center was a design proposal requested by the then Governor of Shaanxi to develop a new mixed use culture district. The 124,600 m2 development included office towers, a luxury hotel, shopping center, an arts and film district, artist housing and an art museum. The cultural functions are inter-twinned between the housing, office and mall connecting all elements through programmed cultural boulevards. The hotel is split in two towers: the residential suites’ and the hotel room towers, with luxurious amenities; a grand lobby, restaurant/lounge, dining rooms, gym & spa and shops. The split hotel tower layout ensures great views and light. Inspired by ‘folk houses’, with their elaborate courtyards, this hotel has a great public and semi-public area for guests. It is also directly connected through the winter garden with the mall and the cultural block. The design for the housing area goes back to the intimacy of the traditional Hutong; with its narrow streets and courtyards it creates a more private residential area. We translated the Hutong in public and semi-public areas for modern apartments with generous amenities, such as gardens, small shops, daycare, gym facilities and playgrounds. The traditional Hutong and its relaxed lifestyle, is translated into a modern housing area with the themes “Live, Play, Learn.”
