Join the Barrington Area Library, Barrington 220 and the PTO President’s Council as the third annual One Book One Barrington reading event continues! March and April bring book discussions, community conversations, music, films and plenty of learning and enrichment for all ages. Resilience and relationships are our focus.

OBOB presents the HBO film biography Temple Grandin. Grandin, a woman with autism, overcame the limitations imposed on her by her condition to earn a Ph.D. and become an expert in the field of animal husbandry. Along with the movie, hear a brief presentation about resilience and children with special needs given by members of Barrington Area Special Voices. Register. OBOB teams up with the National Alliance on Mental Illness to welcome speaker Toni Hoy. Hoy shares her family’s experiences in raising two children with mental illness, while looking at the differences between institutional long-term care and the smaller group home setting. Register. Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand tells the true story of Louis Zamperini, a WWII airman and former US Olympic distance runner. Let’s head back to the Swing Era and celebrate the end of One Book One Barrington! DeeDee Gallagher-Johnson from Bataille Academie of the Danse leads a fun swing dancing class and demonstration. After a short break for sweets and coffee, show off your moves on the dance floor while enjoying a live band. The Last Mission of ‘Hog Wild’ Saturday, March 9, 2 PM Adults & young adults

Illinois Humanities Council Road Scholar Terry Rainey discusses the ill-fated last flight of B-29 ‘Hog Wild.’ The plane was shot down on a humanitarian mission to North Korea, leading to the Cold War hostilities between Russia and the United States. This program is made possible in part by an award from the Illinois Humanities Council, the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Illinois General Assembly. Register. The American Road to Victory Film Discussion Series: Part II Sunday, March 17, 1 PM Adults & young adults

We join forces with the VFW to screen The Americans on Hell’s Highway, Part II of this documentary series. Operation Market Garden is one of the most controversial and misunderstood campaigns of World War II. Although U.S. troops met all their objectives, the campaign was a failure. Following the film, we’ll discuss it and hear from local veterans. Register. Note location: The Garlands of Barrington.

In 1943, a British fighter plane crashes in Nazi-occupied France and the survivor tells a tale of friendship, war, espionage, and great courage as she relates what she must to survive while keeping secret all that she can. Unbroken is the story of World War II prisoner-of-war Louis Zamperini and his struggle for survival and recovery. The American Road to Victory Film Discussion Series: Part III Sunday, April 14, 1 PM Adults & young adults

We join forces with the VFW to screen The Americans In The Bulge, Part III of this documentary. Against great odds, American soldiers played a vital role in defeating the German war machine as it made one final, desperate gamble to throw the Allied offensive into strategic disarray. Afterward we’ll discuss the film and hear from local veterans. Register. Note location: The Garlands of Barrington.

Build your skills with a computer class.

The library offers basic computer classes to help you get more comfortable with computers and introductory classes on popular social media sites and technology. These classes are for adult and young adult Barrington Area Library cardholders and are listed in order of difficulty. To meet demand, all unfilled seats will be released five minutes after the class begins, regardless of reservation.

How to Make Memes and Infographics Tuesday, March 19, 7 PM

Not sure what “memes” are? You’ve seen them everywhere: images of cats with funny phrases or spinoffs of the “Keep Calm and Carry On” poster. We’ll cover the best free sites for making memes, and help you create an information graphic, or “infographic,” using the Web site visual.ly. Mouse skills and experience surfing the Web required. Google Hangouts on the iPad Thursday, April 4, 7 PM location TBA

Move over, Skype! Google Hangouts is the new tool for video conferencing. Bring your own iPad with the Google+ app downloaded or use one of ours. Basic knowledge of the iPad required.
