About Barrington Stoke books Children who read for pleasure enjoy significant advantages in education and in life. But making reading a pleasure for struggling and reluctant students can be a challenge, especially as many face real barriers to accessing print, including learning difficulties specific or otherwise, poor attention span and negative perceptions of reading. Barrington Stoke was established by literacy and SEN experts working in partnership with professional trade publishers to identify and overcome the difficulties experienced by young people with SpLD, language and learning difficulties or reading reluctance with roots in other issues. The design and editing of our books is informed by understanding of the process of reading itself and the obstacles facing these readers: Reading process

Obstacle(s) for strugglers

Barrington Stoke solution(s)

Visual feature analysis

Poor visual perception

Dyslexia-friendly font with high ‘shape’ and reduced ambiguity

Visual stress

Heavy paper to reduce show-through from other side

Poor eye-muscle control

Tinted paper to reduce glare Carefully calibrated line and letter spacing Lack of right-hand justification and increased leading to support tracking

Searching of visual lexicon

Compromised recall and working memory

Tweaked syntax to reflect natural language structures and support readers in applying language knowledge

Reduced language experience

Reduced frequency of irregular words and ambiguous language Reduced abstract language Illustration to support comprehension

Grapheme-phoneme relation

Poor set of correspondences

Reduced frequency of irregular sounds

Our books are punchy, with accessible word-lengths supplemented by plenty of chapter breaks to provide rest stops for readers who have not yet built reading stamina (while cliff-hangers incentivise them to return!) Most importantly of all, our books are brilliant stories written by some of the best children’s authors in the UK. Our books are available at three broad interest ages (5-9, 7-12 and 11+) and at five reading ages (6, 6.5, 7, 8 and 8+, or NC Levels 1-3). Books are edited to offer particular accessibility in opening chapters as research shows that readers’ confidence increases as they move through a text. You may download free sample pages for all of our titles from www.barringtonstoke.co.uk. As a rough guide, a book is at the right level for a reader if (s)he can read a page of text without struggling over five words or more.

Reading Age Interest Age This subtle legend on the back of the book gives the RA (reading age) and IA (interest age) of the book.

Our Authors At Barrington Stoke, we believe that books should be uplifting, engaging, exciting, intriguing and inspiring. We hate to hear a book described as ‘written for reluctant readers’. Reluctant readers are not a homogenous group and while it’s perfectly possible to reduce barriers to comprehension and help anyone access text more easily, it’s not possible to say who struggling and reluctant readers are, or what they like. Dyslexia, after all, affects 7% of the population and reading reluctance as many as one in two. Our list is based on the core principle that reluctant and struggling readers deserve the best – the best writers, the best illustrators, and the best covers, finishes and design available. We are incredibly fortunate to be joined in this belief by many of the best writers and illustrators in the UK. We publish Carnegie Medallists, Children’s Laureates, international bestsellers, and national treasures. As you read through the catalogue you can find out more about these wonderful storytellers who want all children to discover the magic of books. We ask our authors to write a brilliant story without qualification other than length. Even when word-length is very restricted, ‘real’ writers rise to the challenge. Take Pancake Face, one of our ‘Acorn’ SEN readers for secondchance readers. Author Georgia Byng was inspired by an artifact in a London museum to create the story of a Victorian girl stigmatised because she has no nose. A doctor makes her a prosthetic attached to some glasses and she grows up and moves to the Big City. But still Alice hides in the shadows and reveals her true face only to the birds in her garden. But then true love lets Alice see that she can live a joyful and fulfilled life not despite but because of difference. And all in only 300 words! Longer Barrington Stoke texts pack in even more. Anthony McGowan’s The Fall, for example, makes full use of every one of its 10,000 words to tell, sparely and finely, the tale of lives blighted by one event that, on the face of it, seems completely insignificant and another that is as shocking in its banality as its violence. One reviewer commented that The Fall ‘shows how well a really fine writer can work within constraints of language and structure and create a fine work for adults, young and old, just as a poet can create a great poem within the constraints of form, rhyme and metre.’ Reluctant readers have minds and hearts like the rest of us, and Barrington Stoke authors aim to win those hearts and those minds – that’s the territory where reading comes into its own!

REFERENCE

School Spelling Dictionary Support struggling spellers When students lack an extensive range of sound/letter correspondences, dictionaries can be of limited use. A struggling speller may well look for ‘giraffe’ under ‘j’ and ‘photo’ under ‘f’.

Spelling Bee has helpful hints for young spellers

This popular schools’ version of the international bestselling Dictionary of Perfect Spelling allows students to use phonic attack to find both regular and irregular spellings. Students can look up a word as it sounds – if they are correct, they will find it in black and if they are wrong they will find it in red with the correct spelling in black alongside. Designed for use from Key Stages 1 to 3, the School Spelling Dictionary is ideal for improving spelling and writing. It has an accessible, dyslexia-friendly layout with:

★★ an alphabet across the top of the page to aid searching ★★ additional hints from ‘Spelling Bee’ to help find words ★★ short descriptors for homophones and other easily confused words ★★ support with verbal inflections and comparative and superlative adjectives ★★ an introduction with tips for successful spelling.

Incorrect spellings are in red; correct spellings are alongside in black.

Graphic novels often appeal to reluctant readers but can offer particular challenges as sophisticated layouts can require strong sequencing skills and a reliance on block capitals can make text less decodable.
