introduction
B six months of brilliant books to close out 2013. We have 8–12s and teens
arrington Stoke continues its celebration of 15 years of cracking reading with
from a host of amazing authors, including Cornelia Funke, Anne Fine, Malorie Blackman and Chris Bradford. Illustrators and author/illustrators joining us include the brilliant Cathy Brett, hot new talent Sarah Horne and the muchloved Ian Beck. In 2012 we extended our list to include the Little Gems – early readers published in response to demand from parents, teachers and librarians. There are more Gems to look forward to in September, including two new titles from Michael Morpurgo. Michael Morpurgo also features in a brand new venture we launch in 2014 – our first ever picture books. These gorgeous titles can be enjoyed by anyone but there’s an extra bonus in the special design features that will help parents with dyslexia read to their children. Keep an eye out for advance information on these before the end of the year. As always, we are indebted to the authors, illustrators, agents, booksellers, librarians, reviewers and others who have helped us in our mission to make brilliant fiction accessible to all. Huge thanks to everyone who has supported our list over the last 15 years. Here’s to another six months of cracking reading!

how we do it
Cr a c k i n g R ea din g Did you know: ➔➔ that black text on white paper can hurt sensitive eyes, while off-white paper helps? ➔➔ that careful spacing between letters and lines can help new and struggling readers? ➔➔ that justified text can mean readers get lost on the page? ➔➔ that many young readers, parents and carers feel more confident about opening a book if it has clear, manageable chapters to give natural ‘rest’ breaks? ➔➔ that research has shown boys prefer books of 100 pages or under?
C lo s e-up. . . Barrington Stoke books help emergent, reluctant and dyslexic readers unlock the love of reading. Our books are crammed with ingenious design and editorial tricks to ensure an accessible read. Best of all, the books are brilliant stories by the best authors in the business, and so also offer a great quick read for more confident kids.

‘My son started You Killed Me! last night. He loved it! That in and of itself is amazing. He read about 25% in one sitting. Again AMAZING. He asked that I get more for him to carry in his backpack. Again AMAZING. Thank you so much.’ Parent ‘... my daughter Lucy who is ten and has never been able to complete a book on her own, immediately picked up Living With Vampires and read it from cover to cover without any problems. It was her New Years resolution to read a book on her own and you made it possible for her to do that, I am eternally grateful.’ Parent ‘A friend showed me your books and I wanted to say how thankful I am to you! My 8 year old is dyslexic, and the key problem was the fact that she had to read much younger interest age for her ability and therefore got no pleasure from reading. I read to her every night and we have gone through hundreds of books, so she is book friendly, but we couldn’t stimulate her. Yours are brilliant... superb progress.’ Parent ‘My son, 11, is very concerned about what others think of him and insists on ploughing through reading books that his classmates read. Your books have great titles and covers so his classmates can’t fail to be impressed.’ Parent ‘we sat down and my son read us all the first chapter before he went to bed last night. I was then woken by the alarm this morning and headed downstairs to find my son on the sofa with the book just finishing the last chapter. He was full of the joy that reading and enjoying a book can give you.’ Parent ‘... he stayed in the library and read, walked out to the car with his nose buried in your book and walked straight in doors, laid on the sofa and didn’t move until he’d finished it... promptly looking up and saying “can we go back to the library and get some more”. Thank you for helping a little boy to love books!’ Parent ‘Thought you might like to know that I spoke to my cousin yesterday, who told me that BS books have, almost literally, saved her dyslexic child’s reading life. Having rejected all books, he now seizes on yours and asks for more. Thank you.’ Parent
