introduction
N
ew years are traditionally time for taking stock and we’d like to take this chance to invite you to join us in thinking about how best to inspire and nurture a lifelong love of reading in ALL children. Stories have the power to transform lives – it’s that simple. But many children never have that life-changing experience of becoming a book lover, of finding a way into a world that offers not only entertainment, delight, comfort, company and challenge but also educational and social advantage. Some children face barriers such as dyslexia or scotopic sensitivity, and low engagement with reading can be an effect – as well as a cause – of deprivation. What low reading levels never are is ‘someone else’s problem’. In studies, as many as one in two children state that they don’t enjoy reading. That’s far too many to imagine for a moment that dyslexia and social disadvantage are always to blame. Many kids simply have a myriad of entertainment options at their fingertips, and reading loses out. We believe that short, brilliant, accessible fiction can transform reading for these children, and that’s why we publish books with word counts from 2,500 to 20,000. Our authors are the very best children’s writers in the world, because all children DESERVE the best, and children who don’t read NEED it. Here’s to more children, reading more.

About our Series
About our series Picture Squirrel Picture Books
RA At Level IA 3–5
When parents get involved in supporting their children’s learning, attainment and self-esteem are boosted hugely. But some parents struggle with literacy. Our Picture Squirrel books are designed to support less confident parents in sharing books with their children, thanks to our dyslexia-friendly layout and editorial features, and so are ideal for home-school links. But most importantly of all, the books are just great stories by the best authors and illustrators in the business.
Little Gems
RA At Level IA 5–8
The Little Gems are designed to set newly independent readers on a reading-for-pleasure journey. The books are written and illustrated by the top children’s book talent in the UK and are packed with special features to boost confidence and enjoyment. The texts are short (2,500 words approx) and laid out over a substantial page count to promote a sense of achievement. The small, chunky format sits well in little hands, and the hidden jokes and activities in the jacket flaps reinforce reading as fun. Of course, the books have our dyslexia-friendly font and gently tinted paper for sensitive eyes.
Solo
The Solos are first chapter books for children reaching that stage later than their peers. The books have carefully calculated language, character and line spacing and a saturated background tint to give seriously struggling readers the best chance at cracking the reading code. Suitable for ages 10+.
Narrative Non-Fiction
RA 7 IA 7–12
4u2reads are real novels by some of the best children’s authors writing today. Each has a word count of 3,000–4,000 and a reading age of 7. Our special edit process reduces barriers to comprehension such as overly literary structures, abstract vocabulary and complex syntax, and supports children in bringing their own understanding of language to the reading process. The books are heavily illustrated to aid comprehension. These are satisfying stories in a range of genres, packed with action, intrigue and emotion.
8-12 Fiction
RA 8 IA 8–12
Brilliant short novels (5,000 words approx) by some of the best children’s authors today, with all our unique easy read features. Stories are packed with action, intrigue and emotion, and illustrated to support comprehension. Chapter breaks give natural pauses for reflection, and cliff-hangers tempt readers back.
36
RA 7/8 IA 8+
Some children are resistant to fiction because they like to feel their reading has a purpose, typically ‘finding out about stuff’. These readers love our fact-packed titles and, since these are narrative non-fiction or fiction interspersed with fact, kids don’t realise they’re absorbing narrative convention as they go, making the eventual jump into fiction ever easier.
Myths & Legends
RA 8 IA 8+
Our exciting retellings of myths and legends from across the globe are a great way to introduce other cultures and celebrate diversity. And with monsters, ghosts and samurai, the books are tremendously exciting.
Low REading Age Teen 4u2read
RA 6.5 IA 10+
RA 7 IA TEEN
Our punchy, extra-short teen novels are ideal for getting unconfident kids reading with confidence and fluency. Each has a word count of 3,000–4,000 and a reading age of 7. Stories are packed with action, intrigue and emotion and illustrated to support comprehension. Chapter breaks give rest stops and pauses for reflection and discussion – cliff-hangers keep readers coming back for more!
Teen Fiction
RA 8 IA TEEN
Our brilliant short teen novels are punchy and fastpaced. Each has a word count of 10,000 approx and a reading age of 8. These are brilliant short novels in a range of genres, by many of the most important writers for children today. Stories are packed with action, intrigue and emotion. Chapter breaks give ample rest stops and natural pauses for reflection and discussion, and cliff-hangers keep readers wanting to come back for more.
