introduction
B books for 3 to 5s. Our first four Red Squirrel Picture Books pull together the
arrington Stoke sets off on a new adventure in 2014 with our first foray into
cream of UK author and illustrator talent. In February, national treasure Michael Morpurgo pairs with award-winner Ross Collins for a fabulous celebration of the power of books and the imagination and Eleanor Updale and up-and-coming star Sarah Horne ramp up the itch factor with some nasty nits. In June comedy star Charlie Higson and new talent Mark Chambers contribute a cautionary – and laugh-out-loud funny – tale of the dangers of too much Xbox, and former Children’s Laureate Michael Rosen is joined by the wonderful Chris Mould to tickle those funny bones with Wolfman. These gorgeous titles can be enjoyed by anyone but there’s an added bonus in the form of special design features to support dyslexic or less confident parents in reading to their children. Of course we also publish a host of brilliant authors in our teen, 8–12 and 5–8 ‘Little Gems’ list, including Barrington Stoke debuts from Linda Newbery, Caroline Lawrence and Michael Rosen. Lots of old favourites are back, too. As always, we are indebted to the brilliant authors, illustrators, agents, booksellers, librarians and others who share our commitment to reaching out to new readers and breaking down the barriers that continue to exclude too many children from the joy of books. Here’s to 2014: another year of cracking reading!

how we do it
Cr a c k i n g R ea din g Did you know: ➔➔ that black text on white paper can hurt sensitive eyes, while off-white paper helps? ➔➔ that careful spacing between letters and lines can help new and struggling readers? ➔➔ that justified text can mean readers get lost on the page? ➔➔ that many young readers, parents and carers feel more confident about opening a book if it has clear, manageable chapters to give natural ‘rest’ breaks? ➔➔ that research has shown boys prefer books of 100 pages or under?
C lo s e-up. . . Barrington Stoke books help emergent, reluctant and dyslexic readers unlock the love of reading. Our books are crammed with ingenious design and editorial tricks to ensure an accessible read. Best of all, the books are brilliant stories by the best authors in the business, and so also offer a great quick read for more confident kids.
