Barrington Stoke and The Bucket List books are all about the love of story. With the The Bucket List – launching in August – our aim is to find new stories, stories that matter, stories that pull us up and make us think again, make us cry or make us laugh. We’ve sought out some incredibly exciting titles, bringing bold new voices, thoughtprovoking perspectives and brilliant books in translation to the UK and beyond. With Barrington Stoke our aim is to find new readers and unlock a love of reading in more kids. Our fantastic short fiction titles are designed with an eye to accessibility – helping break down the barriers that many kids face due to careless design or huge page extents published (whisper it) more with adults than children in mind. These books are absolutely not ‘for’ dyslexic readers – from the Little Gems to the Picture Squirrels, they’re quite simply cracking little stories accessible to more of us.

Alpha Coulibaly is emblematic of the refugee crisis today – just one of millions on the move, at the mercy of people traffickers, frustrated, endangered and exploited as he attempts to find his family, who have already left for Europe. With a visa, Alpha’s journey would take a matter of hours; without one he is adrift for months. Along the way he meets an unforgettable cast of characters, each one giving another human face to the crisis. A timely, important and stunning graphic novel account of one man’s desperate journey from North Africa to Europe. Foreword by Michael Morpurgo.

Aleksandra has issues with her voice. Stress makes her stutter, and she can only speak clearly on stage, freed by the words of the characters she plays. Then, when Aleksandra befriends her new neighbour Megan, and through her, meets charming, handsome Ruben, it seems she has discovered a doorway onto a different world, and a different Alek. But Ruben wants Aleksandra to play a role for him, and it will come close to destroying her. A stunning English-language YA debut from well-established Italian novelist Manuela Salvi, following in the vein of iconoclasts Melvin Burgess and Louise O’ Neill. It is testament to the power of Manuela’s writing that she too was rendered ‘voiceless’ when this novel was withdrawn from sale in Italy.
