Sorry if sounding fan-girly over Barrington Stoke but when kids cry with happiness that they have finally read a book - wow!”

he last year has been good for children’s books. The market held up better than the trade in general and actually saw an increase despite tough economic times. Coverage in the press was also good, boosted by a controversial Carnegie Medal winner. But these positives were not matched by any improvement in the huge numbers of young people who don’t engage with books, and suffer as a result. From our little corner of the world, it seems that awareness of reading reluctance is on the up. There has been a lot of chat about supporting and incentivising kids, via national charity campaigns, digital delivery platforms and ever more tempting books. But we believe this is only half a solution – the other half is design and editorial focused both on quality and accessibility. Today picture book designers seem ever more wedded to the reverse of readability - black text on a navy background, anyone? Young fiction is becoming more and more ‘designed’, with reversed-out text and wrap-around approaches. And in YA the rule seems to be the longer, the better, which might explain why young teen boys – who prefer books of 100 pages or less, studies consistently show – don’t read much for pleasure. For many children, these barriers are insurmountable. At Barrington Stoke, everything we publish is designed
Let’s help more children grow a love of reading to break the barriers down. Turn over for more info on how we achieve this. Of course, a book has to be worth reading for anyone to make the effort. As ever, we are so proud to publish an incredible roster of authors who believe, as we do, that we need to get more children reading more. Our Little Gems list goes from strength to strength, with variously touching, gorgeous and laughout-loud funny outings from Anne Fine, Michelle Magorian, Berlie Doherty and Frank Cottrell Boyce. In our 8-12 and teen fiction we welcome back a host of well-loved names including Jeremy Strong, Karen McCombie and Roger McGough. We publish two stunning picture books from Cornelia Funke with Mónica Armiño, and Michael Rosen with Richard Watson. And we extend our Conkers imprint to include colour 8-12 fiction showcasing the very best writers and illustrators around – Michael Morpurgo is paired with Catherine Rayner and Eoin Colfer with Victor Ambrus. Let’s make these six months all about more children, reading more.
