Making reading a pleasure Tips for Mums and Dads A love of books gives a child lifelong pleasure, broader horizons and great advantages in learning. Mums, dads and other carers are brilliantly placed to help develop this love. Here are some tips to help: 1. Read together as often as you can. Bedtime is a brilliant time. Settle down, cuddle up and enjoy a picture book or a few chapters of a longer book together. 2. Keep learning to read and loving to read separate. As your child learns, you will often find yourself helping them. Don’t let this replace time spent reading to them. Bedtime especially is for rest and relaxation – don’t pressure your child by asking them to do the reading themselves. 3. Let your child choose books they enjoy. Don’t worry if they choose simple books, or the same book over and over again. Children build their confidence in this way. 4. Book tokens make great birthday and Christmas presents and the gift of a library card and regular visits is priceless. Put a bookshelf in your child’s room too. This gives books a central place in their life. 5. Enjoy! You are giving your child a priceless gift.
