Welcome to the
Barrington Stoke Classroom Catalogue 2015–2016 Want to improve literacy across your school? Looking for an effective way to use your Pupil Premium funding to help struggling learners? Looking for SEN reading resources? Developing a love of reading can change children’s lives. Young people who make the jump from learning to read to loving to read don’t only become better readers – they become better learners across the board. Their literacy skills are consolidated, their horizons are broadened and they are better able to succeed in school and ultimately in life. Yet many children fail to get the reading bug. Almost every school in the country counts among its student cohort keen readers, struggling readers, and young people who can read but don’t. There are many reasons for reading difficulty and reading reluctance, from specific learning difficulties and disenchantment with beginner books to a lack of family time and increased competition from gaming or online chatting. Barrington Stoke’s first-rate short fiction combats many of the factors that can stop young people getting into books. From Early Years to upper Secondary, the books support struggling students with a range of accessibility features, motivate reluctant readers with clever highlow editing and challenge higher achievers as bitesize speed-reads eminently suitable for broadening reading tastes or in-school analysis. Turn over for more on our accessibility features including our unique dyslexia-friendly approach. We hope you enjoy browsing our titles; please do contact us if we can help with anything.

About Barrington Stoke books Children who read for pleasure enjoy significant advantages in education and in life. But making reading a pleasure for struggling and reluctant students can be a challenge, especially as many face real barriers to accessing print, including learning difficulties specific or otherwise, poor attention span and negative perceptions of reading. Barrington Stoke was established by literacy and SEN experts working in partnership with professional trade publishers to identify and overcome the difficulties experienced by young people with SpLD, language and learning difficulties or reading reluctance with roots in other issues. The design and editing of our books is informed by understanding of the process of reading itself and the obstacles facing these readers:
Reading process
Obstacle(s) for strugglers
Barrington Stoke solution(s)
Visual feature analysis
Poor visual perception
Dyslexia-friendly font with high ‘shape’ and reduced ambiguity
Visual stress
Heavy paper to reduce show-through from other side
Poor eye-muscle control
Tinted paper to reduce glare Carefully calibrated line and letter spacing Lack of right-hand justification and increased leading to support tracking
Searching of visual lexicon
Compromised recall and working memory
Tweaked syntax to reflect natural language structures and support readers in applying language knowledge
Reduced language experience
Reduced frequency of irregular words and ambiguous language Reduced abstract language Illustration to support comprehension
Grapheme-phoneme relation
Poor set of correspondences
Reduced frequency of irregular sounds
Our books are punchy, with accessible word-lengths supplemented by plenty of chapter breaks to provide rest stops for readers who have not yet built reading stamina (while cliff-hangers incentivise them to return!) Most importantly of all, our books are brilliant stories written by some of the best children’s authors in the UK. Our books are available at three broad interest ages (5-9, 7-12 and 11+) and at five reading ages (6, 6.5, 7, 8 and 8+, or NC Levels 1-3). Books are edited to offer particular accessibility in opening chapters as research shows that readers’ confidence increases as they move through a text. You may download free sample pages for all of our titles from www.barringtonstoke.co.uk. As a rough guide, a book is at the right level for a reader if (s)he can read a page of text without struggling over five words or more.

Reading Age Interest Age This subtle legend on the back of the book gives the RA (reading age) and IA (interest age) of the book.
Our Authors At Barrington Stoke, we believe that books should be uplifting, engaging, exciting, intriguing and inspiring. We hate to hear a book described as ‘written for reluctant readers’. Reluctant readers are not a homogenous group and while it’s perfectly possible to reduce barriers to comprehension and help anyone access text more easily, it’s not possible to say who struggling and reluctant readers are, or what they like. Dyslexia, after all, affects 7% of the population and reading reluctance as many as one in two. Our list is based on the core principle that reluctant and struggling readers deserve the best – the best writers, the best illustrators, and the best covers, finishes and design available. We are incredibly fortunate to be joined in this belief by many of the best writers and illustrators in the UK. We publish Carnegie Medallists, Children’s Laureates, international bestsellers, and national treasures. As you read through the catalogue you can find out more about these wonderful storytellers who want all children to discover the magic of books.

Some students are resistant to fiction because they like to feel their reading has a purpose, typically ‘finding out about stuff’. These readers love our fact-packed titles and, since these are narrative non-fiction or fiction interspersed with fact, students don’t realise they’re absorbing narrative convention as they go, making the eventual jump into fiction ever easier. Of course, all the books have our unique dyslexia-friendly, easy-read design and editing.

School Spelling Dictionary Support struggling spellers When students lack an extensive range of sound/letter correspondences, dictionaries can be of limited use. A struggling speller may well look for ‘giraffe’ under ‘j’ and ‘photo’ under ‘f’.
Spelling Bee has helpful hints for young spellers
This popular schools’ version of the international bestselling Dictionary of Perfect Spelling allows students to use phonic attack to find both regular and irregular spellings. Students can look up a word as it sounds – if they are correct, they will find it in black and if they are wrong they will find it in red with the correct spelling in black alongside. Designed for use from Key Stages 1 to 3, the School Spelling Dictionary is ideal for improving spelling and writing. It has an accessible, dyslexia-friendly layout with:
★★ an alphabet across the top of the page to aid searching ★★ additional hints from ‘Spelling Bee’ to help find words ★★ short descriptors for homophones and other easily confused words ★★ support with verbal inflections and comparative and superlative adjectives ★★ an introduction with tips for successful spelling.

Graphic novels often appeal to reluctant readers but can offer particular challenges as sophisticated layouts can require strong sequencing skills and a reliance on block capitals can make text less decodable. Kidnapped is specially designed to make sequencing and wordreading easier and is based on Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic novel, with artwork by internationally renowned comic-book artist Cam Kennedy.

Using our books in school to boost all your students’ attainment Barrington Stoke books can help you raise attainment among less confident and strong readers alike. We hope the following suggestions give you some ideas for using the books at the chalk face.
End the excerpts tyranny A complete story is more satisfying than an excerpt and helps students understand style better, but many teachers turn to excerpts due to time constraints. Titles like our moving Fox Friend by Michael Morpurgo are ideal short class novels. There’s plenty of depth, and everyone can read the book in a few sessions, leaving you plenty of time to explore themes and elements of the author’s craft. Visit our website for a range of free Classroom Discussion Guides.
Boost all your students’ reading with paired reading In paired reading, students read aloud to each other. A fluent reader is usually paired with a less fluent reader, often a younger child. Some schools call these pairings ‘reading buddies’. Studies show there is an added benefit to the practice – the confident reader’s reading ability improves as well. Barrington Stoke books are ideal for use by students supporting their peers or younger children due to the short length, clear type and regular chapter breaks.
Support serious strugglers with guided reading Struggling readers may benefit from reading with an adult, which provides opportunities to check and develop comprehension. It also allows the guider to reinforce or introduce strategies from the basic - e.g. re-reading sections if the meaning has not been understood - to the complex, such as using prediction and inference and reading for deeper meaning. We have step-by-step guided reading notes to accompany several of our titles. These are available free of charge from the schools and libraries area on our website.
easily the best HiLo available – Teacher
Studying structure, style and convention The arcs of full-length novels are complex and sub-plots complicate structure. Due to their short word-counts, our novels are more manageable for students tracking structure. Bernadette Shail of Martin Grove Primary, Middlesborough chooses our books to explore the ‘story mountain’ of introduction, build-up, climax, resolution and conclusion ‘because you can see all the bones of the story.’
Up the accessible content in your literacy scheme All our books are quizzed for Accelerated Reader and many are leveled for Catch-Up.
Promote reading for pleasure Completing a book is key to understanding the rewards of reading, but studies show boys in particular are reluctant to even pick up a book of over 100 pages. ‘Hook’ reluctant readers with a Quick Read section in your class or school library, and consider stocking our fun fiction and non-fiction titles on themes like gross-out facts or football.
