1. INTRODUCTION What are you going to read here is the story of a team. This story started in Romania, with 8 people, from Spain, Italy and Turkey, with a project to develop. This is the story of Action Changes Things. The video represents metaphorically our experience. The boat is our team. It sails with the "sun" or with the "storm" that are our good and bad moments. Sometimes we were disoriented, maybe lost, but anyway united and ready to change direction if necessary.

2. OBJECTIVES OF THE PROJECT SOCIAL INCLUSION Social inclusion is at the basis of our project, we implement it in all our activities. The aim is that all the children of all the centers we work with, feel included in the society. Moreover, we implement this objective by doing activities with different schools. All the schools have different needs and we think that it would be a good idea to do some activities together in order to enrich all of them. We reach this aim through a clear methodology that include the following objectives: • • • •

Creativity Cultural awareness Languages Volunteering promotion

All of them we will explain point by point in the next pages.

5

2.1 CREATIVITY Creativity it’s one of the most important skills to work with the children, sometimes in the schools it’s difficult to develop and promote it. Taking advantage of our project, where we worked in a nonformal way, we have tried to give them spaces for their creativity by different expressions: music, plastic arts, dance, theatre, etc. We did games, experiments, talent shows and a lot of stuff to express themselves by creativity! The music was one of the most important elements in our project because we create a connexion with the children, mostly in the school with special educational needs, difficult to create it with other ways of communication (like the verbal expression). We tried to connect this element with another fields, for example with songs to learn vocabulary in English, to improve also the knowledge. We used to put not only music in Romanian or English, we also have experimented with melodies of other cultures and/or continents. For example, we discovered the African music is a good way to feel the rhythms and involve them in the activities. The dance was also an important point for us, we modify games in order to include the body expression, it’s a good tool to broke with the barrier of the shyness and to let the group connect more between them. For example, we tried to connect the emotional state with the body and the music dancing songs that represent different states (fire, water, wind, land). Theatre was one the most useful methodology to work with teenagers, we try to involve them in different situations that they should resolve by forum theatre. Moreover, was a good tool to use in the gymkhanas and the talent show to improve the imagination and the mutual understanding with the group. Definitely, plastic arts are the main point. We made use of this to create musical instruments, to decorate spaces, to do origamis, etc. We think that it was a good way to learn about how to manage with the emotions, mostly with the frustration when something doesn’t work, or for example the cooperation between the children to create.

6

2.2 CULTURAL AWARENESS Here, in six months, all of us discovered, in his own way, the romanian culture. Sometimes traveling, sometimes speaking with local people, sometimes reading and often just browsing around looking for something we don’t know. All of us had to admit, at least one time during this project, to have been curious, scared, amazed, disgusted and ignorant. And is when you complete that list that you can say to have experienced something new that worth to be seen. Romania makes you curious because is unique, scares you because is different, amazes you because there is always something you don’t expect, disgusts you because is controversial and make you feel ignorant because is not how it appears. And is for these reasons that I’m sure that Romania worth. This project gave us also the opportunity to spread our culture between our colleagues, in the schools, and with the locals. So we opened our minds, discovering the culture of the people we work and live with, enabling us comparing different societies and developing a critic thoughts towards our countries. We made new friends, tested new foods, learned new languages, discovered different lifestyles, new places, new opportunities. We explored losing our self, widening everyday our comfort zone, our limits, our awareness of the world. This project developed a new thought that unifies peoples, finding connections between the cultures and building new bridges that will remain for our entire life.

7

2.3 LANGUAGES Languages are one of the main part of our project and it could not be different since we come from different countries, such as Italy, Spain and Turkey, and we are living in Romania. Thanks to the English, that embraces all the different nationalities, we had the possibility to communicate and develop our activities. Furthermore, start to use the Romanian language had been the most useful support ever. Our project has touched different target groups and for each of them we kept a different approach according to the use of the languages. With the teenegers we improved their communication skill in English through debates on newness topics, as social inclusion, climate exchanges and the rule of the woman. With the younger children, in the first part of the project we used the English with the aim to teach them new vocabulary and to get them used to a foreign language; while, in the second part we decided to focus on other objectives due to their needs and we started to use more the Romanian language as a support in our activities. For a period of time, we had also an English club, in which our aim was teaching English using a nonformal way, such as games, creativity and art.

8

The exchange of cultures and languages has been really deep. From our part, as volunteers, we learnt a lot of Romanian thanks to the children and we had the opportunity to present our countries through dances, songs in the mother tongue and games to the kids.

Thanks to the multiculturality of the group and to the energy of the kids, we had the possibility to exchange our cultures and languages and to underline how is important to know different languages and, in particular, the English for the communication.

9

2.4 VOLUNTEERING PROMOTION For volunteering promotion we used all the posters and flyers we made for our events which we posted in the schools so that everyone could know who we were. We also keep track of an Instagram and Facebook account with which we can reach a huge amount of people interested in our work.

It was our first contact as a group and with the association so we had to do a big introduction to know what was exactly our project about and put together our ideas of things we wanted to do. We made a lot of games to know each other better and to become confident as a group. We started to approach the romanian culture as we visited the city and started our romanian lessons. We had the first experience as volunteers going to the first center: Aripi de Lumina, we knew the children and we had a lot of fun with them.

18

2 week To get more used to the city and the places where we were going to work, we visited Sf Mina, Beethoven, Henri Coanda and Matei Basarab. We started to share our work when we created the instagram, email and facebook account, we made our logo, our presentation poster, etc. We also started to get in touch with the activity descriptions and evaluations files and we learned more and more in our romanian lessons. We became a closer group going on a trip to Bulgaria together.

19

3 week Finally a new volunteer arrived: Marta. She arrived for the busiest week, the one we started going more often to the centers, we had our first contact with the children of Beethoven and Sf Mina so we had our first experience in planning activities for different kids and different ages. As a first experience it was really exciting and we were really involved and looking forward to go to the centers. We also started the english club with two really nice girls, they had a lot of interest in learning.

20

4 week This week the kids didn’t have to go to school because it was holiday, that’s why we only went to Aripi de Lumina and we had english club but we did it every day. We had two more students in the english club and with them we learned a lot of new vocabulary and we had a lot of fun together. Finally on Thursday Edoardo arrived, the last volunteer, we were really happy to be all together. The day after we left Craiova for the capacity building in Baia de Fier. There we met with the Bailesti volunteers, we were all the people of the association together. We learned a lot of things that can help us for the activities, we got stronger as a team and the Bailesti volunteers shared their experience with us. We got more in touch with the romanian gastronomy with the help of two of the members of the association as the meals were typical from Romania.

21

5 week During the fifth week we started to get used to a fixed schedule and we got to know better the pupils of the schools. We taught the children different things in English to introduce them the basic words like the numbers, the colors, etc. We also made a presentation on Matei Basarab to explain the aim of our project to the children.

22

6 week This week we have achieved to know more the kids of the high schools Henri Coanda and Matei Basarab by doing different activities and asking them their motivations and what they want to learn with us. We are really looking forward to begin with the clubs that we will make with them. On the other hand, we have had activities as usual with Beethoven, Sf. Mina and Aripi de Lumina in which we have spend a really good time and we have learned a lot of english vocabulary as the clothes, the animals or the jobs. In the same way we have done the english club, improving the vocabulary with a lot of games. Finally, we have had our rumanian lessons as usual we have learnt a lot of new vocabulary and grammar.

23

7 week This week starts with the meeting of a new group of children in Aripi de Lumina and with them we painted and we had a lot of fun; we went also another time and we spent a really good time. In Sf. Mina we learnt the number and the name of the colours in English and we did handcraft with the emotions. In Beethoven we reviewed the clothes item and we celebrated the carnival making beautiful masks. We went also in Henri Coanda where we had a nice cultural exchange introducing characteristics of Spain and Italy. In Matei Basarab we started the activities with a theatre session, it was really funny; we met also the new group of kids and we collected their preferences; we are looking forward to start the clubs with them.

24

8 week This week started with our second meeting with the Matei Basarab’s teenagers: we made a cultural exchange game concerning Spain and Italy. We also met for the second time the children of Aripi the Lumina and with them we did different activities to become more confident and to teach them new vocabulary about the food. We continued our meeting with Aripi de Lumina, Beethoven and Sf. Mina, where we made different activities to introduce the vocabulary as the food, the colours, the clothes and the perception of the sense. We did a lot of activities outside because of the good weather and we had a lot of fun in these sunny days. On Friday we had the English club and in the occasion of the Woman’s day we faced a new important topic: the gender equality. Finally, as usual, we had our two Romanian lessons where we started to put in practise the language.

25

9 week The last weekend we went to Bailesti to met the place where are the others volunteers from our association, for this reason we started the week with a lot of energy! This week the volunteers of the new project (ACT Together) came with us to the different activities to know the children of the differents centers and to observe how it’s our way to work because they want to implement their project with a non formal education methodology like us. We worked a lot of things in the centers! We made activities abouts sports with Aripi de Lumina, Basarab and Henri Coanda; with Sf. Mina and Beethoven we did activities to developed the artistic expression. The last week we contacted with CRES to make a meeting to know how they work in the centers with children with special educative needs, on Thursday we did it and we took advantage to exchange our experiences.

26

10 week This one was the last week before “On Arrival Training”, and we spent all the week working in the event (Volunteering Festival) that we will have after the training with the others associations from Craiova. The event will be the 6th of april in the city center of Craiova (Square Frații Buzeşti). Between all the association, we decided making different activities like: games for children, sport activities, dancing, face painting, smart games and we will have also live music. In our project we will do three different activities called: “Rainbow parachute”, “Handcraft time” and “Spoon and balls (race)”.

27

11 week This week has been the on arrival training week. We learned about the EVS in general and the options that gives the European Solidarity Corps. We learned about stereotypes and cultures, about how to work in team and manage conflicts and emotions. We entered deeper into the way the romanian society works and we knew more about the cigna insurance and the bureaucracy in the EVS. It has been a really tiring week but also one full of learning and having fun.

28

12 week After the On arrival training, that gifted us a lot of inspiration, is time to resume our daily activities. But with a new point of view, focused on long terms objectives studied for each school according with their needs. So we started planning activities based on new strategy that we will keep with us for the following months. We finished the week with a huge event in the city center that gathered all the volunteers in Craiova. This event was successfully giving us visibility in front of the community.

29

13 week This week we’ve kept working with the students of the different centers but on Monday we did something special. We did a common event with the students of Aripi de Lumina and Sf Mina. The aim of the event was the exchanging of toys: the students from Sf Mina gave some toys to the children of Aripi de Lumina. It was great, everyone had so much fun together and the receivers of the toys were sooo thankful.

30

14 week This week has been really intense. On Thursday we begin to work in a new school, Energetic, the students there were so motivated and really involved in everything. It is because of this that we are looking forward to return as soon as possible. As a novelty we also did an event with Henri Coanda with a lot of children which was a little bit difficult but made as stronger as a group, all of us made quick decision in the moment as split the children in two groups in order to be easier to understand the games.

15 and 16 week: Easter holiday.

31

17 week This week was important for us because we had two differents events: the Volunteering Week and the European Day. During this week the activities that we did have a common point: the social inclusion, to promote and explain our project to the children and teenagers that we work with. For the 9th of May, European Day, we did special activities to make the children and teengares aware of the European Union and the importance to be part of a community and its values. We did it in differents centers with variants funny and artistic activities (treasure hunt, paint flags, games about geography, etc.). They children in Romania know a lot of things about Europe, it was a surprise for us!

32

18 week During this week we worked with the different schools and social centers like usually. We played games to promote the healthy competition and create the identity of the group to be more united between them. To achieve this goal we created a board game “The axonxenxinâ€? (the name of the game was decided by the children) that it was used in all the high schools and Aripi de Lumina during this week. In this game the children had to overcome different challenges (cultural questions, drawing, imitations‌) to arrive at the end of the game. They had to work in team. In Beethoven we had the same objective and we tried to achieved it through sport games where they could have fun. In Sf. Mina we reviewed the colors in english and all the things that we did before and we introduced them another topics like the seasons of the year.

33

19 week We started the week with a busy Monday. We started with a new school: Hippy School where we met the children for the first time and we spent good time with them. Then we followed the activities with the children of Aripi de Lumina where we did a gymkhana that they really enjoyed and with the kids of Matei Basarab where we played new games. We continued the activities on Wednesday in Energetic focused on our countries, Italy and Spain, and in Beethoven where we moved a lot and had fun despite the bad weather. We finished the week with the kids of the Traiana School with running games. In the weekend we prepared the luggages for the Midterm in Poiana BraĹ&#x;ov for our last training.

34

20 week This week we went to brasov for midterm training. We met new people are familiar, we met again with people we knew before,we had a very nice 3 days. We evaluated our Evs experience and gained comprehensive information about Youthpass. We discussed our plans after Evs and the contribution of Evs to our lives.

35

21 week Is the first week of June and the next week the schools will finish, for this reason we decided to dedicate the last two days of the week at two final events to say goodbye in an entertaining way! The first event “ACT IMPREUNA” involved the students of Matei Basarab, Energetic and Beethoven. The activity consisted of a route with 10 different challenges about Romania. The aim was to complete the 10 challenges using cooperation and helping each others. The second event “ACT IN NATURE” involved the students of Sf. Mina and Aripi de Lumina and was setted in The Romanescu Park. We created a history and did a gymkhana about the importance of the nature to involve the children in the challenges and improve the connection and cooperation between the teams. We had a lot of fun in both the events and we say goodbye to each other in a properly way!

36

22 week The week started playing with the kids in Aripi de lumina on Monday in the Romanescu Park and on Tuesday inside the Center because of the rain. After that we had our last two activities in Sf. Mina where we played and had fun with the children this weekend we took advantage of the warm weather to play outside with the kids. like on Friday, when, with the kids of Aripi de lumina, we made our activities in the city center. Or In Saturday making activities in the countryside with the association of tabara bucuriei that works with children from the Hospitals.

37

5. SPECIAL EVENTS 5.1 VOLUNTEERING FESTIVAL On 6th of April, ACT and all the associations (ANTER, CRES, ANDCTR and Explorator) in Craiova who take in european volunteers participated in a nice event in one of the squares in the center of Craiova (Square Frații Buzeşti). The main objective in this event was to promote volunteering in this city through different activities related with each project (Games for children, sport activities, dance shows, face painting, live music, smart games…) Our project (Action Changes Things) prepared some activities with the aim of giving the possibility to all the children to participate in all of them. The activities we did in the event are shown below: “Rainbow Parachute”: All the participants take the big parachute with their hands and we will make different games with it. For example: put balls on the parachute and they have to try that the balls don’t fall down. Another example is that each person have a color and when we lift up the parachute they have to change the color crawling, running… under the parachute.

38

“Handcraft time”: We taught the children to do little balls with only three balloons, one bottle and rice. After this we tried to teach them to do juggles.

“Spoons and balls”: We made two teams and all the children had to be on a line with a spoon on the mouth (and a ping-pong ball over the spoon). The game consisted in pass a ping-pong ball with the spoon without falling it to the ground. We created a circuit to make more difficult the game.

39

This was our first event and for us it was incredible, we really had fun, all the activities succeed and many children with whom we usually work, came to enjoy with us.

40

5.2 CHILDREN DAY For the children day we prepared a common event with another association that also works in Craiova as is good to work together when our aim is the same: celebrate the children day. We did the event in a square in the middle of the old town of Craiova, there was music, dances, theaters and a lot of different activities that were set up for the occasion. The goal of the activities we prepared was to make the kids and the people who joined our games put themselves in the place of a person with some kind of physical difficulty. We made four stops: one for visual difficulties, one for motor difficulties, one for speaking difficulties and one for cooperation.

The result of the event was good even though we considered that the activities were not suitable for that kind of event as they needed that the same people stayed for all the activity and, in the event, the people was moving from place to place. Anyway it was useful to learn and improve future events

.

41

5.3 FINAL EVENT: ACT IMPREUNA The 6th of June we did our final event with the schools Beethoven, Basarad and Energetic. The first point that we establish was our main objective: to promote the social inclusion. Because of that, we decide to do a gymkhana with a mixed groups in order that all of them had relation with the people of other schools and as a group they could help each other. The second point that we thought about was the topic of the gymkhana. As we have been showing during the project a lot of our cultures and countries. We thought that it could be interesting and motivating for them to a gymkhana about Romania. So in order to complete the gymkhana they had to pass different challenge about their country: questions, sports, traditional dances... So once we had all the challenges we split each of us in a different challenge and we also ask for help to other volunteers in order that each group would have also a supervisor to make the things clearly and to encourage the group to win the gymkhana. So the day 6th we did our event almost everything was as we expected. The unique improvise is that we had to do some different energizers because not all the schools was on time. But anyway we had time enough to finish the gymkhana. After that, we did a final circle in which we says thanks to them for all this months and we did a proper goodbye.

42

5.6 FINAL EVENT: ACT IN NATURE On 7 June 2019 we dediced to do a big final event in Romanescu Park involving Sf.Mina and Aripi De Lumina’s children to say goodbye in an entertainment way! We started with different games like manzinguer, lama, cell and flag game to start up the mind and the body. The topics of our event were to promote the connection and cooperation inside and between the mixed teams and commemorate the environment day. For this reason we organized a gymkhana focus on the importance of the nature. After the energizing games, one of us appeared with an old letter that said:

4th June of 2019 Dear daily, Today I'm full of anger!!! Because I was flying above the Romanescu Park in my way to the last planet and... suddenly a tornado cames and made my keys fall down of my magic pocket. Buuuuut everyone knows that I'm the worst creature of the universe and I WANT TO DESTROY THE WORLD!!! Fortunatly I have my minions to help me recover the keys. I don't have a lot of time because Pachimami it's also looking for them! I hope to find them before... La revedere!

After the letter, Pachimami (Belen) appeared and explained that she wanted to achieve the keys before Miss Polu to save the world. At this point some of us split the children in four different groups explaining them what they had to do. We created four different planets:

* Planet number 1 music: Furor Leader: Bet The group was split in two, the Musicmaster (Bet) said different words in each round (for example: sun, love, etc.) and they had to sing a song with the word in any language, the first group who didn’t have ideas lose and then started with another word. * Planet number 2 sport : Spider Leader: Ebru They played to the game "spider", the Sportmaster (Ebru) 43

was the animal.

* Planet number 3 theater: History with words Leader: ALE The Theatermaster (Ale) gave them five words and they had 8 minuts to create and represent a little history. The words are: Recycling, Nature, Planet, Plastic, River.

* Planet number 4 team work :Acrosport Leader: Ele The Teamworkmaster (Ele) had three photos of differents figures and they had to choose and represent one.

For every challenge they had 8 minutes and if they passed it they would received a piece of key. But they had to be careful to not be catch by the minions (Marta, Edoardo, Ines and Francesc). If they were catched they had to do a mini-challange like invent/sing a song, riddles or shapes on the floor. Did the mini-challenge they had back the piece of key.

When all the teams had 4 different parts of key, we met all together to compose the four big keys! Finally, we gave them the certificate to help us saving the word , we had a photo all together and we said goodbye!!!

44

5.7 SUMMER CAMP 5.7.1. First day: GAMES The first day in our Summer Camp, just the children from Aripi de Lumina came to enjoy with us in the different water games that we prepared for them. At the beginning we did some energizers to meet each other because there were some kids that we didn’t know from Aripi and they didn’t know some members of our association. Our first objective was to enjoy making activities with water for the summer and improve the cooperation between them.

45

5.7.2. Second day: MUSIC AND THEATER The second day we splitted the session in two parts. In the first one, we made dancing activities where we taught them dances from different places in the world that we learnt during this project. We also made another little games where they had to work the improvisation and corporal expression. We based the second part on theater and work in team. At the end of the session they relaxed doing massages to their colleagues.

5.7.3. Third day: SPORTS The third day was the day of sports, such as volleyball, football and baseball. The first sport that we played was volleyball. To become familiar with this sport we started from the base movements and then we splitted the children in 2 teams for a real match. After that, we learnt how to deal with the penalty kicks of football and we made a challenge. In the end, we played a variety of baseball which was really funny. For each sport the children were divided in different teams. In this way, we tried to promote the healthy competition among the children playing in a cooperative way.

5.7.4. Fourth day: EXPERIMENTS This day, the session took place in Aripi de Lumina because for us it was easier make all the experiments inside and not in Romanescu Park. We prepared four different experiments where we used simple materials like balloons, plastic bottles, oil, vinegar, sodium bicarbonate, etc. The children were splitted in 4 groups and they had to pass from one experiment to the next one each 15 minutes more or less. We never did one session like this so they enjoyed and had fun during that morning.

5.7.5. Fifth day: TALENT SHOW This was the last day of the summer camp. It took place in Aripi the Lumina instead of Romanescu Park due to logistical aspects. To activate the body we played one song from each of our countries: Turkey, Spain and Italy and we danced all together. After this, we divided the children in two teams and the talent show started. Time by time one child threw the dice on which there were 6 challenges: dance, sing, theatre, mime, draw and building. The two team had to call out on the dare. When the challenge finished the umpire gave the point (from 1 to 5). It was really good. The children had a lot of energy and they used their creativity to succeed in the competition. It was a nice way to say goodbye to them. We are grateful to the staff of Aripi de Lumina to allow us to use their spaces and to commit to bring everyday the children in the summer camp.
