SUMMER 2012
One of my greatest inspirations, LeRoy Neiman, passed away several weeks ago at the age of 91. I won’t bore any of you with details about Mr. Neiman’s life and work. There are far better sources and writers who can fill in those details. My story is basically about a still wet behind the ears southern art student who saw greatness in the work of an established artist. In the summer of 1978 I was a student at The Art Institute of Atlanta. Pretty much from the time I was a child I knew that I wanted to be an artist. My dreams were starting to be realized when I won a scholarship to attend AIA. I took as many courses geared towards illustration as possible. Nothing else interested me as much as making great pictures with my mind and my hands. During that summer of ‘78 a traveling exhibit entitled ‘The Art of Playboy’ came to AIA. It was installed in the main reception area of the school. There were approximately 20-25 pieces in the exhibit. These were original pieces of art. Some of them were on canvas...others were on illustration board or paper. They were all nice, but there was one piece in particular that I was drawn to over and over again. It was done by LeRoy Neiman. It was a series of relatively small paintings done of boxers in a fight. They were stacked in 2 columns, about 4 on each side. They were magnificent. I had
never seen such an explosion of colors combined with a beautiful flow of movement and action. It all looked so fresh and immediate. For the 2-3 weeks that the Playboy exhibit graced our school I became a semi-permanent resident of the exhibit space. My fellow smoker student pals couldn’t understand why I wasn’t going outside with them like I routinely did for our nicotine fixes. As long as Mr. Neiman’s piece was at the school I was going to be upstairs checking it out, trying to glean some knowledge and understanding from this wonderful piece of art. Several years ago the publisher of this magazine, Ray Foley, related a story to me about LeRoy Neiman. At a social gathering Mr. Neiman asked Ray “Who are all of the artists who do your Bartender covers?” Ray told Mr. Neiman “It’s just one artist down in Atlanta.” I like to think in my own mind that maybe just for an instance LeRoy Neiman might have been impressed that one artist could create so many different covers in a wide variety of styles. Lord knows that I was plenty impressed with him. Rest well Mr. Neiman.

“Booze is the answer. I don’t remember the question.” “Who needs friends when you can sit alone in your room and drink?” “Drink nothing without seeing it; sign nothing without reading it.” After a stop at Union Landing on their way home from work, two men found themselves on a roller coaster. One said, “We’re making great time, but I’m not sure this is the right bus!” Two men wandered into the New York subway by mistake. One said to the other, ‘I don’t know who lives here, but I like his train set!”
Mike strikes up a conversation with the bartender. “I’ve quit my job and taken up writing as a career.” “Sold anything yet?” asks the bartender. “Oh yeah lots of stuff,” says Mike. “Like what?” “My watch, my TV set, my VCR, my stereo….”
Hymie said to Flanigan, “Why does a woman work ten years to change a man’s habits, and then complain that he’s not the man she married?”
“So what’s your handicap?” “I’m a scratch golfer. I write down all my good scores and I scratch out all my bad scores.

LIBAR Y THE JUICE By Jay McInerney Alfred A. Knopf, Publisher www.aaknopf.com $26.95
: Vinous Veritas
For more than a decade, Jay McInerney's vinous essays, now featured in 'The Wall Street Journal,' have been praised by restaurateurs, by esteemed critics, and by the media. Here McInerney provides a master class in the almost infinite varieties of wine and the people and places that produce it all the world over, from the historic past to the often confusing present. From such legendary chateaus as Margaux and Latour and Palmer to Australia and New Zealand and South Africa, to new contenders in Santa Rita Hills and Paso Robles, we learn about terroir and biodynamic viticulture, what Champagnes are affordable (or decidedly not), even what to drink over 37 courses at Ferran Adria's El Bulli - in all an array of grapes and wine styles that is comprehensive and thirst-inducing.
