FRESH WINDOW BUSHWICK BROOKLYN PRESENTS BARTHA CONTEMPORARY LONDON. AN EXHIBITION OF RECENT WORKS BY DOUGLAS ALLSOP ADAM BARKER-MILL ALAN JOHNSTON THREE BRITISH ARTISTS IN THEIR 70’S OPENING EVENT AS PART OF EXCHANGE RATES EXPO THURSDAY OCTOBER 20 UNTIL SUNDAY OCTOBER 23 EXHIBITION CONTINUES UNTIL NOVEMBER 20 2016
DOUGLAS ALLSOP
DOUGLAS ALLSOP’S WORKS PRESENT A SITE SPECIFICITY THAT IS ARCHITECTURAL. THEY ARE NEITHER ABSTRACT NOR ILLUSORY BUT REFLECTIVE. THEY CAPTURE AN INVERTED MIRROR WORLD THAT CHANGES WITH OUR PERCEPTION. THEY QUESTION THE WAY WE LOOK AT THEM AND WHAT WE WANT TO SEE. DOUGLAS ALLSOP DOES NOT CREATE IMAGES BUT HIS WORKS DO. USING REFLECTIVE MATERIALS THEY MIRROR THE ROOMS THEY ARE IN, THE VIEWS THROUGH WINDOWS, AND THE PEOPLE LOOKING AT THEM. BUT THESE ARE ELUSIVE, GHOSTLY IMAGES, CAUGHT ON A SCREEN OF VIDEO-TAPE SPANNING THE ROOM, OR REGISTERING ON A PERFORATED SURFACE SO THAT THE ‘FRAME’ BECOMES A MOVING PICTURE. ALLSOP EXPLORES OUR PROCESSES OF PERCEPTION AND PLAYS WITH OUR QUEST FOR STABILITY AND MEANING.

ADAM BARKER-MILL
THE WORK OF ADAM BARKER MILL EXAMINES THE PHYSICAL AND EXPERIMENTAL PROPERTIES OF LIGHT, AN INTEREST, WHICH ORIGINATED FROM HIS CHILDHOOD FASCINATION WITH THE CAVES LOCATED IN HIS HOMETOWN OF SOMERSET. BARKER MILL’S SCULPTURES REVISIT HIS CONCERNS FOR LIGHT, WHICH HE INITIALLY BEGAN WORKING ON IN THE SIXTIES. HIS WORKS HAVE A DECEPTIVELY SIMPLISTIC APPEARANCE, ALLOWING THE VIEWER TO MAINTAIN AN IDEALISTIC VISUAL, ACUTELY UNAWARE OF THE CAREFULLY STRUCTURED DESIGNS, WHICH GENERATE, MANIPULATE AND MODULATE LIGHT. BARKER MILL’S SCULPTURES ARE HIGHLY ENGAGING, THE VARIOUS LIGHT EFFECTS AND CONSTANTLY CHANGING EXPERIENCE, IS DUE TO THE VIEWERS POSITIONING, NATURAL LIGHT CONDITIONS AND IN SPECIFIC WORKS, THE OPTION TO INTERACT WITH THE WORKS; ACTUALLY ALTERING THE LIGHT INTENSITY AND COLOUR FOR YOURSELF.

ALAN JOHNSTON
JOHNSTON’S WORK EXPLORES SPATIAL CONTEXTS AND RELATIONS THROUGH DRAWING AND ARCHITECTURAL CONSTRUCTION, REFLECTING ON THE SPATIAL AND TACTUAL IMPLICATIONS IN ARCHITECTURE WHERE PERCEPTUAL NOTIONS ARE RENDERED AS COMMON FACTORS IN SIGHT AND TOUCH. THIS FIELD IS CLOSELY RELATED TO THE WORK OF PATRICK GEDDES, ‘PHILOSOPHICAL GENERALISM’, AND ‘GESAMTKUNSTWERK’. THIS IS A COMPARATIVE CONTEXT WHICH HAS ITS ROOTS IN THE PRACTICE OF ART, ARCHITECTURE AND VISUAL THINKING IN THE WEST AND THE EAST, AND RELATES TO CONCEPTS AND PRACTICES SUCH AS WABI SABI. JOHNSTON IS REGULARLY ENGAGED IN COLLABORATIVE INITIATIVES IN ART AND ARCHITECTURE INCLUDING WITH PROFESSOR SHINICHI OGAWA, TOKYO, AND NEIL GILLESPIE, EDINBURGH.
