The future of healthcare in East London It starts here

Be part of our vision to transform healthcare and reduce health inequalities in East London

“Barts has an inspiring tradition of pioneering medical research and giving treatment to those who need it that stretches back 900 years. Our mission today is to build on this tradition and ensure fairer healthcare for all, with a new era of personalised medicine. This has never been more important for our diverse East London communities: we must act now so that all our patients have equal, prompt access to the specific treatments that they need to ensure the best possible care now, and in the future.”

The Barts 900 Campaign

In 2023, St Bartholomew’s Hospital will celebrate its 900th anniversary. To mark this historic event, the Barts family is launching a once-in-ageneration fundraising appeal.

With your help, Barts Charity will raise £30million in the next two years to build two new world-class medical centres in East London that will serve residents and employers in the area, delivering local and global impact:

• a dedicated Breast Cancer Centre at St Bartholomew’s Hospital

• a cutting-edge Clinical Research Facility at The Royal London Hospital.

These hospitals sit on the doorstep of London’s major business and financial centres, while also serving some of the most deprived boroughs in the country. Patients in East London develop long-term and life-limiting illnesses much younger, on average by 15-20 years. This needs to change.

These two new centres will help transform healthcare in East London and the City, building on existing excellence to provide world-class care for our communities. Through increased research capabilities, they will also make a difference for people around the world.

Transforming how we

treat breast cancer in East London

Breast cancer is the most common form of cancer affecting women in the UK today, with one woman diagnosed every ten minutes and 32 people dying every day. Outcomes are poorer for women in East London, and patients tend to be younger, present with symptoms later and with the more aggressive breast cancers, compared to the rest of the UK.

With your support, we will build a new Breast Cancer Centre. This state-ofthe-art facility will bring together surgical services under one roof. Over 80% of patients have surgery as part of their treatment and this new centre will centralise surgery and post-surgery

care, improving every stage of the patient experience.

Behind this proposed centre is a worldclass team of breast cancer specialists whose ambition is to create a new standard of excellence in breast cancer care.

As well as improving breast cancer outcomes for patients today, it will help make a significant contribution to global research, saving lives for generations. Your support will make this centre a reality. Together we can transform how we treat breast cancer in East London.

Clinical trials underpin the future of healthcare. They are vitally important in the development of new treatments, medications or devices, by ensuring they are safe and effective in people.

Lack of diversity in clinical trials means treatments can be less effective, and less suitable, for communities such as those in East London, which can in turn contribute to lower life expectancy and poorer health outcomes.

To address this, we are building a new Clinical Research Facility in Whitechapel. This world-class facility will enable research teams to develop innovative new therapies, putting East London at the forefront of cutting-edge healthcare innovations.

The new centre will significantly expand local clinical participation in trials and will make sure people in East London benefit from the results of clinical studies.

Clinical trials in this area will not only make better, more tailored treatments for the local population, but for millions of underrepresented people around the world. With your support, we can build this centre and develop the life-saving treatments of tomorrow.

Developing the life-saving treatments of tomorrow

Our hospitals rely on the support of donors to fund life-changing health improvements and world-class research, which go above and beyond NHS funding. We are looking for supporters who share our vision, and can make these national centres of excellence a reality.

Whether through a personal gift, or by advocating for us among your networks or place of work, you will be part of a legacy of improving healthcare for the next 900 years.
