Terrestrial wildlife across the globe is reducing at an alarming rate and many species that we know and love are at risk of extinction; elephants, tigers, rhinos, lions, pandas, sloths, jaguars and many more. In the last 40 years animal populations have declined by an average of 52%. Why? Loss of habitat is the primary threat, with these areas facing increasing pressure from development of urban areas, unsustainable agriculture and logging and pollution. Wildlife poaching is an increasing problem, with rhino poaching increasing to over 1000 in 2013, that’s three a day. Elephants are faring no better, with 22,000 killed in 2012 alone, that is almost three an hour. Wildlife conservation programmes are vitally important in the effort to protect species and their habitats. Frontier runs several conservation programmes, working in some of the most bio diverse but threatened areas on the planet.
Medical and healthcare projects help those in need gain access to vital, potentially life-saving resources, they can also support initiatives to raise awareness to educate and protect people against HIV and aids, nutritional health or maternal care. Skilled professionals joining projects can provide a vital aid in under resourced communities, whilst medical volunteering can help those starting out to gain experience. There will be a range of tasks for volunteers to take part in depending on their particular interests and previous experience which will vary from day to day and project to project. Whether getting hands on, shadowing professionals or helping with administration, each project offers volunteers to make a valuable contribution and positive impact in the lives of others.
From journalism internships to gaining experience on a medical & healthcare project, an internship abroad is a fantastic way to travel and explore whilst learning. Whether you’re discovering more about conservation and environmental ethics, or helping
progress awareness for human rights, an internship abroad is a chance to gain new skills, travel to new places and meet a huge range of new people along the way.
