1 SPECIAL EDUCATION SCHOOL This project is a special education school designed to specifically cater to students with Autism Spectrum Disorder, Down Syndrome, ADHD, and motor impairment. Common design considerations for each of the disorders addressed are applied to provide special students with peaceful experiences while preparing for mainstreaming or graduation. The project’s objective was to reduce the confusion students feel, represented by puzzle pieces, and turn it into feelings of peace and tranquility, once completing the puzzle. Located in Al Maqtaa area, on the outskirts of Abu Dhabi, the site sits between Al Maqtaa and Mussafah bridges. This site was chosen from the school land use of the 2030 plan as it fills the gap in SPED facilities between Abu Dhabi Island and the mainland. School functions follow the concept of sensory zoning, from low to high-stimulus with transition/escape spaces in between. Services like the admin are separated from student interaction spaces. All functions are connected with a clear circulation path for easy wayfinding. The biophilic design concept is used as doses of nature by providing spaces for appreciating nature and others for interacting with it, e.g. Horticulture. Modularity, views to the outside, supervised outdoor learning, and the use of indirect natural light were guiding aspects of the design.

2 AL BATEEN PUBLIC LIBRARY Since the discovery of oil in the early 1960s, the UAE has been a welcoming destination to individuals from all over the globe. Currently, the UAE is home to over 200 different nationalities. When immigrating from one’s home country to another, a set of beliefs and values that constitute a package called background follows along to the new home. UAE’s residents have diverse background packages that affect how they think and act in the community they are now part of. Borders are not as simple as lines separating countries on the map. The real borders are those invisibly limiting our understanding of the world outside our bubble. This library aims to educate visitors about tolerance and diversity in the UAE. Through providing knowledge and doors to worldwide information, the project hopes to become a space where social, cultural, and interpersonal borders disappear. Passing through the cultural galleries, visitors are expected to appreciate what is meaningful to others in their surrounding community. Just like the iconic Al Bateen Mall was once celebrating transporting multicultural passengers in the UAE, Al Bateen Public Library aspires to celebrate UAE’s tolerance and spirit of coexistence.

3 MIXED-USE TOWER It is fascinating what Abu Dhabi has become over the course of just 50 years since the union in 1971. A world destination rising from the desert has certainly been through significant stages and changes in its urban fabric. This dramatic development can clearly be seen on the hybrid architectural style of the city. Three main styles are quite clear when analyzing Abu Dhabi’s architecture today: old city, modernism, and the contemporary city. Modernism being the link between the old and the contemporary has become the vernacular architecture of today’s Abu Dhabi. Unlike Dubai or Sharjah that have their ‘old city’ zoned, Abu Dhabi’s old city and modernist buildings are integrated within the contemporary high-rise towers. As the city continues on its road to higher levels on the scale of development, the repetitive cycle of demolition and reconstruction of contemporary buildings threatens to leave the city without its precious memories. Many old forts like Qasr AL-Hosn have seen conservation initiatives; yet these initiatives have not reached modernist buildings built in the 70’s and 80’s to identify their significance. Permitting the contemporary style to take over will erase the process of how Abu Dhabi achieved its success. This project aims to shed light on the importance of keeping the integration of the three architectural styles of Abu Dhabi. It also promotes giving a second chance to socially significant buildings. Seeing the inner beauty of these spaces can give us a sense of the intangible past.

4 ENVIRONMENTAL LEARNING CENTRE & DESERT ACCOMMODATION Nature on Earth has always provided a home to humans and species that interact together to form delicate ecosystems. However, these natural ecosystems are under severe threats due to human interventions. If humans do not rethink their daily decisions and actions, it will mark the end of life on “Earth as we know it”. This Natural Environmental Learning Centre aims to raise awareness of UAE’s nature, specifically of four main ecosystems: desert, marine life, wetlands and mountains. The center itself is an ecosystem consisting of living (biotic) functions and non-living (abioti c) functions that are tied together through a preservation bridge. Ecosystems are the combination of living and non-living organisms and their interactions that form the environment. The concept of this center aims to show that natural ecosystems should be kept preserved without human interventions that can collapse the whole environment. The architecture of the center should work with the nature of the site rather than challenging it, hoping it is a way to inspire the city to reconsider its relationship with the environment.

Near capital park, Abu Dhabi The site is located in the middle of the city between rectangular buildings. the design approach was to blend in with the context through following similar geometry to the surroundings. The grid used achieved both conceptual and contextual objectives. This is through showing different functions as different elements of the ecosystem that collaborate to form the overall whole. Responding to the site was considered in screen placements and providing an inviting shaded plaza to gather the city inhabitants. Green roofs and wall plants were used to reduce the urban heat island effect and to blend with the capital park.

5 AL-AIN VEGETABLE MARKET The Six Oases of Al-Ain have always been a vital source of food, water and shelter. Al-Ain Oasis, a UNESCO- recognized cultural site is fed by a traditional irrigation system and is located in the middle of the city. This market project acknowledges the importance of Al-Ain oases and their bountiful resources in the nourishment and development of the UAE. The project is divided into six main regions representing the oases with circulation streams in between representing the ancient falaj irrigation system. It was due to this unique underground system that agriculture could thrive in Al-Ain. Consumers and tourists are invited on a journey to not just discover a variety of food products but also to experience the central open area that ends up framing a clear view of Al-Ain Oasis, “Heart of the City”.This project explores folded slabs as a structural system for longspans needed in a vegetable market. A folded slab unit supported with a v-column is repeated to form the roof.

1. ADU SUSTAINABLE BUS STOP COMPETITION | 1st PLACE WINNER ADU 13060B BUS STOP A sustainable approach for a bus stop that is 100% solar-powered. The design aims to solve the problems of the absence of a bus stop on the opposite side, the long distance (about 180m) that students walk to reach the other stop, and the absence of light in the area after sunset. The design suggests a 90m pathway, lit by LED lights, that connects both stops to encourage the use of public transport and create a social space.
2. INTERNSHIP SHEIKH SHAKHBOUT MEDICAL CITY INTERIOR
Palm trees have always provided the UAE with food, shade, and trunk material for building the early Emirati houses. Sa’f shading is inspired by the palm tree as a symbol of UAE’s heritage. 3R’s – Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. UAE’s growing GDP/Capita means increased waste generation. A resident uses 450 plastic bottles in a year. Sa’f shading is printed using plastic pellets from the country’s plastic waste. Waste is collected, shredded, washed, and additives are added to make a chemical mix used to print. When broken, Sa’f can be shredded and used for other 3D printing options for 7 times.
5. NATURAL INSPIRATION IN BUILT ENVIRONMENT | ON THE RIBS
The pavilion is located in Al Wathba Wetland Reserve which is the only site in the Arabian Gulf where the Greater Flamingo regularly breeds. The pavilion functions as an outdoor seating area where visitors can watch educational videos and presentations about the flamingo and other species in the reserve. They can enjoy the view of the flamingos in the pond while being shaded by local palm tree leaves.
The structure of the pavilion consists of 2 inclined elements representing the flamingo’s legs and a curved element representing its neck. All 3 elements are connected at two major joints, one representing the flamingo’s ankle and the other is functioning as its knee. The pavilion is inspired by the flamingo skeleton, specifically the position of the flamingo while drinking and eating. The flamingo’s neck reaches down to the water while it’s standing.
