BASEL 2018 1st International Forum of EYP Switzerland

CMO – CALL BOOKLET BASEL, 9. OCTOBER 2017

CHAIRS TEAM VISION The vision of the Chairs Team offered by the Board covers four essential aspects of the Forum: the Forum itself; the Academic Concept; the role of the Board; and, the hopes of a Chairs Team.

Contextualising the Forum The EYP is fundamentally an opportunity for growth. What makes Basel2018 special is the possibility to capitalise on that growth, both for its individual participants and the organisation at large. With the organisational freedoms offered by an International Forum, the experienced and open-minded Head Organisers, and the wholly constructive methodology of the EYP Switzerland to try new things, there are few obstacles in ensuring that Basel2018 will be something more than a long session with a lot of participants. Only by attending such an event that embraces the principles of collaborative ownership and empowered learning, can one perceive how such ideals can transpose into one’s own thinking. The remarkable aspect of Basel is that it gives freedom to its participants to define their own learning and their interactions with the Forum, providing the possibility to shape your very surroundings is always a challenge worth facing.

Interpreting the Academic Concept The Academic Concept of Basel2018 is primarily about learning, within and beyond EYP. Whilst it may be understood as an expectation of high quality resolutions and expert-like Chairs, these are but the results of such a Concept. For this reality of occur, a pedagogical and empowering methodology need be presented by the Board in order to foster a developmental environment for Chairs to structure their learning and preparations for the Forum - this methodology is the Academic Concept. By allowing Chairs to craft their own topics, thereby fostering a deeper understanding to the complexities of the issues, Chairs can dedicate time otherwise spent on unpacking the root of the given topic to honing their own interaction with their committee and the Forum. The extensive pre-Forum preparations and ICBT will aim to go beyond the standard topic overview writing we use in EYP, to align more with the research methods and rounds of review seen in academic institutions. In its essence, the Academic Concept of Basel2018 hopes to empower participants through facts, in an environment ripe of constructive and iterative learning.

Expectations of the Board In every sense of the term, the Board of Basel2018 should be understood as a support mechanism, a provider of structure, and a facilitator for challenge. The Board as a collective and as individuals, hope to create a sense of comfortability where Chairs will be listened to and can be confident in that what they say will matter, simultaneously ensuring that they have the tools needed to implement their own visions. Whilst the Board does aim at safeguarding some sort of academic quality, this will take the form of coaching Chairs in their academic endeavour. As learning is inherently a personal matter, the Board should reflect the individual needs of the Chairs in their approach, aspiring to being open to all ideas and personalities the Chairs Team will end up representing.

Atmosphere of the Chairs Team Embracing the principle of collective ownership applies not only to the Leadership, but to all participants too. This principle means more than simply working on a project together with other people: it implies a sense of responsibility and commitment to that project, a working environment that only consists of people wanting to be there and to pour their passions into creating something that matters. It is this shared purpose that will untie the Chairs Team of Basel2018, alongside a well-balanced work: play dynamic, and an ability to step back at times to observe and enjoy the experience as a whole. Beyond this, it is the hope of the Board to gather a Chairs Team to inspire and empower all of its individual members to succeed in their own as well as collective aspirations. Anyone interested in investing themselves into a challenge, in being given a full ownership of their position and their projects, and in being part of the decision-making process of the largest event of the EYP spring, is very much encouraged to apply to Basel2018. Having presented the framework that the Board aims to provide for the Chairs Team herein, much of the details and implementations are left purposely ambiguous. It is the hope therefore that applicants will express their own ideas and inspirations to make Basel2018 truly spectacular in their applications. You will also find that there are no word limits to the question, for the purpose of allowing you yourself to determine how to weight each answer. Answer as you feel you should. We very much appreciate honest and genuine responses in applications, so please be true to yourself. Hugo DĂźrr, Irida Karasmanoglou, Waltter Roslin, and Marta Sznajder

CHAIRS TEAM QUESTIONS 1. Without mentioning your education, occupation, or nationality, introduce yourself to the selection panel. (With this question, I want to get to know you beyond the obvious. Beyond the above restrictions, what you decide to mention is up to you.) 2. What is your motivation to be a Chairperson in Basel? What purpose and added value do you bring, and how will this enable you lead and develop your committee? 3. How would you describe your working style? What makes you tick, what annoys you? (Both in relation to EYP and your own education/professional life.)

4

4. Outline a topic you would like to work with during your Basel2018 experience. Consider the session theme, “Innovation Building the Framework of Tomorrow, and also that topics will take a global, rather than an EU, perspective. Clearly present the problematisation of the topic (i.e. why it is relevant) and the relevant actors involved. Note that you do not commit yourself to this topic by including it here. 5. What potential do you see in the Academic Concept? Do you have any ideas you would like to implement, or elements you would like to work on, in Basel, be it in regard to academics, training, or social interaction? Consider the note on the Basel Academic Concept when developing your response.

MEDIA TEAM VISION Innovation for the sake of innovation is a futile attempt in advancement. There is no need to re-invent the wheel, just as there is no one way to use it. Some established parts of EYP Media are well founded and don’t need to be changed. Media Teams don’t always need to be revolutionised for the sake of progress, they don’t need to be stripped down and rebuilt from the ground up. Media Teams just need to be styled with personality. A Media Team offers a valuable opportunity in terms of creative experimentation and freedom. This opportunity should be treated with care and ambition. It has to be handled with passion and determination. We are looking for people who share our passion and determination. Our vision is equal parts practicality and creativity. At the core of it, we will focus on applying our personal styles to a variety of well established aspects of EYP Media. From working in cycles of production that would target different aspects of the session in turn, to tweaking the classic Chair-MTM relationship (spoilers: we won’t be following the usual ‘one MTM per committee’ approach), to grouping the team into clusters with specific focuses as decided by the Media Team themselves (possible examples being photography, delegate interaction, social media, etc). Furthermore, we will place a great emphasis on creating content which has actual meaning and purpose. Practically this means brainstorming on the meaning of the idea, before choosing the best format for presenting it. We are not revolutionising EYP Media, nor are we introducing any groundbreaking new approaches. Rather we want to build upon the advances EYP Media has made in the last few years. Gorgeous photography, immersive projects, delegate interaction, meaningful content.

EYP Media matters. It’s not just a person with a camera. It’s not just a game of Ninja. It’s not just the means to a new profile photo. It’s a medium for thought, for expression. It’s a group of people who tell stories with stories of their own.

What We Are Looking For We are looking for 2 Editorial Assistants and 12 Media Team Members. One EA will focus on and oversee video production for the forum, while the second EA will focus on and oversee photography for the session. We are looking for people to complement our vision of covering and assisting the session experience, helping to manage the Media Team, as well as ensuring comprehensive real-time photo and video coverage of the session. Media Team Members will not be assigned to a specific committee, therefore allowing them to adapt their workload and projects to areas they want to explore and experiment with, as well as focusing on areas they’d like to further develop their skills in. Overall, we are looking for people who can contribute to the session output, work together with the session participants, and with the Officials’ teams. We want dedicated individuals who are willing to work hard and come up with innovative ideas that will interact with the theme of the session and engage all the participants, as well as the broader EYP community. David Corish and Laure Steinville

MEDIA TEAM QUESTIONS General 1. Without mentioning your education, occupation, or nationality, introduce yourself to the selection panel. (With this question, we want to get to know you beyond the obvious. Beyond the above restrictions, what you decide to mention is up to you.) 2. What is your motivation to be a Media Team Member in Basel? What purpose and added value do you bring, and how will this benefit the rest of the team? 3. Describe EYP with one word, using each letter of the alphabet. (26 words)

Editorial Assistants 4. Which Editorial Assistant position are you interested in applying for? (Video or Photography) 5. Why do you think you should be the EA for your specific focus at Basel 2018? What skills can you bring to the Media Team? What’s your vision for the role?

8

6. How would you contribute to the editorial leadership at Basel 2018? 7. If available, please get us acquainted with your previous work in cinematography and/or photography.

Media Team Members 4. We will not be assigning Media Team Members to specific committees, therefore MTMs will have more freedom to choose what they want to focus on; how would you use this freedom? 5. The five cycles of productions cover: pre-session, participants’ arrivals, Teambuilding, Committee Work and General Assembly. Choose one cycle of production and suggest a media project you would like to implement. Please bear in the mind the meaning behind, and the purpose of the project, as well as the intended audience and format of the project. 6. Describe your previous experience with media (newspaper, blogs, photography, video, radio, etc.) and relevant technical skills you may have. Please provide us with a link for some examples of the former, if available.

ORGANISING TEAM VISION “Coming together is a beginning. Keeping together is progress. Working together is success.” – Henri Ford

A team can only be as strong and motivated as the people who are in it. This is why we are looking for you! Having worked on Basel 2018 for over 1.5 years already, it is our greatest pleasure to open one last and final call for organisers. We are now looking for 7 driven organisers to complete our team. The Organising Team currently consists of 16 organisers and two Head-organisers. The team is divided into departments and has settled into their roles. It would thus be of high importance for the new Team Members to be able to integrate themselves into the existing framework. With the team being very independent, we expect applicants to be able to work a lot on their own and communicate freely with other team members. Additionally, you should be able to think outside the box and bring your input into the organising process. The vision for the official´s team is to create strong inter-team exchange and encourage members of different teams to contribute to the overall success of the forum. If you consider yourself a fitting candidate, apply and help us shape the biggest event of EYP in spring 2018! Kate Gurevich and Allegra Margelisch

Explanation of the roles applicants can apply for:

IT & Tech Are you interested in saving the forum day by day by making sure all the technical equipment is functioning as it should? Do you have the skills needed for the job? Then do not hesitate to apply to be part of the IT & Tech support of the forum! A rather unpopular but extremely important job for any event, members of this department are considered absolute heroes. Should you wish to join this department, you will be working together with Fabian Fässler.

Delegate Support Be the favorite person of the 150 delegates present at the session by joining the Delegate support! Your tasks will include helping delegates with their pre-session preparations such as organising a visa as well as answering all their questions and much more. Are you an open and communicative person and are you up for the challenge of communicating with over 20 different nationalities? If you decide to join the department, you will be working together with Nicolas Zazzali.

Teachers’ Support With most delegations being accompanied by a chaperone, this role becomes absolutely indispensable. Are you interested in holding workshops about the European Youth Parliament, showing the teachers around Switzerland and being in constant touch with them? Then this job is perfect for you.

Transportation Should you decide to join and lead this department, you will be responsible for creating a logistics concept, contacting all relevant partners and making sure all transfers meet the safety requirements. Seeing that this department is not occupied yet, joining it would mean truly shaping a big part of the session.

Experts Complementing the high academic quality of the forum, we envision strong cooperation with the University of Basel as well as independent experts. Should you wish to be responsible for finding experts and staying in touch with them and if you have the ability to present EYP to people not familiar with the concept, this job is definitely right for you.

PR&COMM Last but not least, you can still join the PR&COMM department to participate in the creation of the session website, external communication of the session as well as other communications-related tasks. Should you wish to join this team, you will be working together with Jan Ruflin, Jakob Gutschlhofer, Ricarda Pfingstl and Daniela D’Errico.
