COLUMBUS LIBRARY

Columbus, Ohio

Instructor: Justin Diles

PROJECT INFO

The project redefines the traditional library, positioning it as a dynamic communal space deeply integrated into the surrounding community. Rooted in the concept of publicness, the design prioritizes transparency, openly revealing the library’s programmatic intricacies to enhance accessibility and connection.

Externally, the project features a dual-facade design — one with a zig-zag pattern evoking the rugged beauty of a ravine, and another, a street-facing facade with smooth contours. A distinctive skin/shading system enhances both aesthetics and sustainability. Notably, the roof and columns function as a unified system, intelligently collecting rainwater and channeling it through the columns for recycling within the building. This sustainable approach aligns seamlessly with the project’s commitment to environmental responsibility.

Internally, the library is envisioned as a living, breathing space with a dynamic interplay of light adapting to the natural rhythm of the day. Beyond its architectural significance, the project is designed to be an integral part of the community, fostering social interaction and engagement. In essence, this project stands as a harmonious blend of rugged and refined elements, dynamically interacting with its surroundings while incorporating sustainable practices at its core. I anticipate this space will be a positive force, not only for its users but for the broader community it serves.

CULINARY SCHOOL

Columbus, Ohio

Instructor: Erik Herrmann

PROJECT INFO

The project focuses on culture and food recipe exchange. The site has many ethnic restaurants, but they are often located far away from each other. This inspired me to create a communal space that brings these kitchens together, allowing people from different cultures to come together, share their experiences, and learn from one another. One of the key design elements of

the project is the use of courtyards. Courtyards have been common ground in many cultures for centuries, providing an opportunity for people to gather in a public space that is open and accessible. In my design, courtyards serve as a central gathering point, bringing street life into the building and creating a more open and public space. By bringing together different ethnic kitchens in a communal space, my project

PROJECT INFO

The Co-working Tower project emerges as a response to the evolving nature of work culture, particularly in the context of the burgeoning freelance workforce. In contrast to the traditional, neutral office spaces, co-working environments have gained prominence, driven by the desire for community and diverse amenities among freelancers—a demographic anticipated to constitute 50% of the American workforce in the coming decade.

Located in downtown Columbus, Ohio, this purposebuilt co-working tower redefines the conventional office structure. Its distinctive spiral shape not only offers a striking visual presence in the cityscape but also serves a functional purpose. The design incorporates a terrace for each floor, creating green spaces that provide a refreshing break and panoramic views of Columbus city—a deliberate move to enhance the quality of workspaces.

Beyond its functionality, the tower introduces public spaces on the first three floors, fostering a sense of openness and interaction. Notably, a museum on the mid-level of the tower adds a unique dimension, inviting people to engage with the structure. The outdoor atrium ensures ample natural light penetrates the building, creating a dynamic and inviting interior environment. By seamlessly blending aesthetics with functionality, the Co-working Tower becomes not just a workspace but a community hub that redefines the possibilities of co-working lifestyles in downtown Columbus.

HOUSE OF THE NEAR-FUTURE

Greece, Aegean Sea

Instructor: Stephen Turk

PROJECT INFO

Nestled in the idyllic landscapes of the Aegean Sea in Greece, this visionary residential project confronts the impending environmental challenge of depleting global fish stocks projected by 2050. Extensive research underscores the urgency of sustainable fishing practices to preserve our oceans and ensure the livelihoods of fisher families. In response to this imminent collapse of marine ecosystems due to over-fishing and broader threats like pollution, the house is conceived as a sustainable solution.

Crafted as a haven for a fisher family deeply connected to the sea, the residence strategically positions itself around a fish farm, providing a stable and sustainable source of

fish. This innovative approach addresses challenges posed by over-fishing and the decline in marine biodiversity. The architectural design encompasses two distinct sections— an inviting living space and a dedicated fishing facility equipped for processing, cleaning, storing, and packaging fish. This seamless integration not only accommodates the family’s business but also aligns with sustainable living practices. Leveraging cutting-edge technology, the project incorporates drones for efficient retrieval of fish boxes, streamlining the fishing process and optimizing transportation across the city. In essence, this house serves as a sustainable sanctuary, responding to a critical environmental issue while showcasing how thoughtful design can provide solutions for both human livelihoods and ecological well-being.

RECREATION CENTER

Columbus, Ohio

Instructor: Bart Overly

PROJECT INFO

Introducing the Reaction Center, an architectural marvel seamlessly integrated with its site landscape. The building’s curved façade not only softens the street edge but incorporates an innovative shading system reminiscent of tree leaves. This unique feature creates an enchanting play of light, indoors and outdoors, akin to a gentle rain of lights.

The project boasts a vast indoor atrium, fostering transparency and providing panoramic views of sports activities from various vantage points. Connected by bridges for easy circulation, the atrium serves as a central hub. Notably, the rock climbing area intertwines with the atrium, offering climbers and observers a truly distinctive and immersive experience. The Reaction Center stands as a testament to thoughtful design, blending aesthetics with functionality to create a dynamic space for sports and recreation.
