GEORGE BELL, FOUNDING MEMBER O F B E L L G R O U P, CIRCA 1988

Whilst we are considered a market leader, our Group remains a family owned and operated company; George Bell, our Chairman and Founder, set up his own commercial painting and decorating company in April 1984 – Collins and Bell Ltd – operating throughout the central belt of Scotland. Since that time the Group has grown through acquisitions as well as organically; this has resulted in developing a strong network of services, which have been designed to integrate on a national, regional and local basis. Our key strength as a business is our team which we have developed over the years; this is partly thanks to the comprehensive training programme put in place for all employees and our commitment

to respecting individuals. The Group’s main objective is to provide the optimum quality of workmanship in all aspects of the services that we offer; maintaining these high standards has ensured year on year repeat business from the likes of BT, Barratt Homes, Scotrail, National Trust, Carillion, The Royal Household together with various NHS Trusts, local authorities and housing associations. As an organisation, we pride ourselves on more than just the finished product. We seek out business opportunities to build employee and community skills and are considered one of the largest employers of apprentices within the construction industry.

Our work in collaboration with our Social Housing clients covers internal and external repair, redecoration and refurbishment of many dwelling types in many different settings.

Our experienced and substantial presence within the industry means we are able to offer clients timely proposals of any size, which can be fully resourced at short notice.

The commercial sector is where Bell Group started- carrying out maintenance projects such as high performance coatings to steelwork and floor coatings, cyclical projects to factories, offices.

Based on our excellent performance, dedication to customer care, management, best value, service and evident continuous improvement. Many of our clients have now extended our service offering to include Planned and Capital works programmes.

We understand the difficulties of maintenance in the Healthcare sector and aim to make the procurement and execution of works an easy process from start to finish.

We continue to carry out maintenance works to some of the most iconic buildings and structures in the UK for organisations such as Pirelli, Kellogg’s and GSK.

Bell Group have been working on MoD properties since 1998 and worked in partnership with 4 of the 6 Prime Contract providers from 2006-2014. We completed the redecorating of MoD Whitehall and The Old War Office and have continued to be heavily involved in the sector throughout the country.

The industry has changed significantly in the 25 years we have carried out works, most recently with the continuing trend for the public spending more money on leisure and less on retail.

We regularly work in secure environments such as Police Stations, Royal Households, Houses of Parliament and Banks.

Local Authorities have been key to our growth throughout the UK. We have often used local authority work to improve our visibility within communities and help develop local relationships with suppliers and local people. In many areas, we use government schemes to assist with our recruitment of apprentices.

APPRENTICESHIPS As an organisation, we are committed to recruiting and training apprentices to encourage and develop skills within our industry. We have successfully operated apprenticeship schemes throughout the UK for over 20 years. To this end, we take a prominent role alongside our associate trade bodies and federations to promote apprenticeships in schools and colleges and work with a number of key partners including our clients to support young people into the industry. We currently have over 150 apprentices training in a variety of construction trades as well as a number of office based business administration apprentices. This constitutes around 10% of our workforce and we operate an annual apprentice recruitment process which supports and sustains this business target. All our apprentices are working towards industry training standards including SVQ/ NVQ L2 & L3 qualification frameworks and apprentice development is enhanced through the provision of additional in company training and support. This includes the provision of core skills, working at height standards, mandatory H&S training and industry specific training and accreditation including CSCS.

We see ourselves as innovative in our approach to apprenticeships and as such form part of the collaboration leading on new industry training standards and qualifications alongside our trade association partners and Governments Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy Department (BEIS). More recently we have partnered with a number of colleges to create ‘Bell Decorating Academies’ with the aim of not only supporting our own apprentices on programme but also providing additional support to wider students and teaching staff through the delivery of industry based masterclasses and the practical application of functional skills. This approach is being further developed and it is our aspiration to replicate with apprentice providers across the UK.

T R A I N E E S H I P S Our Traineeships offer candidates the opportunity to combine an education and training programme with valuable work experience. In addition to our construction related traineeship programme we also provide opportunities for young people to join the business in a variety of other business areas including office based roles. In each region we have a number of Trainee Quantity Surveyors. We are committed to their development and have designed a four year technical and professional pathway affiliated to the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) which support the progression of trainees within the business and leads them from student surveyor member through to full membership and MRICS status.

WO R K P L AC E M E N T S Our successful Work Placement Programme involves two weeks work experience with many candidates moving into full time paid work placements, apprenticeships or paid employment. Once a full time opportunity has been provided, candidates are automatically included in the organisation’s annual Training Plan process and receive additional training support and development relevant to their role.

Each and every trainee within Bell Group is assigned an experienced and knowledgeable Mentor to assist them with their training and also to provide an additional layer of pastoral support. Our Mentors remain with the trainee throughout the duration of their training programme to help them develop the skills and knowledge they need to meet the industry standard they are working towards. Many of our appointed Mentors joined the company as trainees themselves and bring with them a wealth of both sector and business knowledge. Operating this scheme ensures that this knowledge passed down through the generations and is sustained within the business.

COMMUNITY INVESTMENT The George and Annette Bell Foundation seeks to alleviate poverty, promote health, and support education and communities. Our founders, George and Annette, believe we have a moral responsibility to use the company’s success to deliver positive returns for the communities in which it operates. Bell Group UK supports the foundation and covers all operating and running costs as well as encouraging employees, suppliers and friends to raise funds to assist in the foundation’s work.

OUR KEY PRINCIPLES

ARE

TO:

• Maximise our Social, Economic and Environmental impact within the communities we work in. • Work innovatively and in partnership with clients, local organisations and charities to enhance our impact. • Provide added value for money above and beyond our costed works. We aim to leave a positive social legacy and work closely with clients, local authorities, other contractors, our supply chain and third-party organisations to maximise the impact of our efforts. Our Corporate & Social Responsibility Manager and Community Engagement Team have brought huge economic and social value to the communities we work in and have been instrumental in forming remarkable onsite relationships. Our approach focusses on social issues that are a natural fit with our business and we have identified 4 key areas;

• Unemployment – developing strategies to tackle unemployment and improve the prospects of the unemployed. • Inspiring Young People – making opportunities more accessible to young people, particularly those hard to reach, at the risk of social exclusion and from under-represented groups. • Social Exclusion – tackling societal issues that lead to social exclusion. • Community Regeneration – helping communities thrive, prosper and be appealing places to live.

PROVIDING SOCIAL VALUE C O M M U N I T Y

I N I T I AT I V E S

Our Corporate & Social Responsibility Manager and Community Engagement Co-ordinators work extremely hard to provide social dividend to the communities we work in throughout the UK. Their involvement in other collaborative contracts has brought huge value to the communities in which we are working and has been instrumental in forming remarkable relationships between our team and local residents.

Our Work Placement Programme usually involves 2-weeks experience with many leading to full time paid workplacements, apprenticeships or full time employment. All candidates are all included in our CITB training and CSCS registration plan upon award of a full time place.

R E C R U I T M E N T We are very conscious of local employment issues and it has long been our policy to employ local labour to complement our local management teams throughout the UK- our aim for every project is to have a 100% local workforce. Where we have a long-term Collaborative Agreement or Partnership in place, it puts our Company in a position to offer full-time positions to both skilled and unskilled workers from the local areas. We utilise many methods to ensure opportunities within the business are open to everyone, for example:

• Recruitment drives at office openings, community fairs, schools or colleges and open days. • We have a track record for pledging employment opportunities through collaborative agreements awarded and often work with our clients to advertise on local authority websites, Facebook, within newsletters and Client Offices. • We work with local agencies to recruit apprentices from under-represented groups and those who are hard to reach or vulnerable.

EQUALITY AND DIVERSITY Being a family owned and operated Group responsible and fair working practices are ingrained in the culture of our business, and we strive to be a best practice employer. We are committed to promoting equal opportunities within our industry, and continue to work closely with local Councils and Industry Federations and Leadership Groups to formulate guidelines and policies that govern the industry. Recruiting and retaining talented people is an urgent challenge facing the Construction Industry. Our core of professional and technical staff built over 30 years, have honed their expertise in our specialised trade and we are proud of the large proportion of long-term employees who make up the vast majority of our skilled workforce. We are also very proud of our apprenticeship scheme, which allows us to promote a diverse future workforce with equal opportunities for all. Our structure and culture allows our employees to buy in to the success of our business resulting in an excellent record of in-house promotion. We provide structured training at all levels to ensure a responsible and understanding approach to colleagues, clients and customers alike. We are Living Wage and Disability Confident accredited.

FAMILY VALUES Our family morals and beliefs create a stable foundation for the company and having family members at every level of the business provides a built-in support system that nurtures teamwork and solidarity. We work extremely hard to encourage our team to respect, trust and be loyal, as well as encouraging ownership and innovation. It is as important to us today as the day we were incorporated that our family principles are upheld in all that we do.
