EDITOR’S LETTER

B

eing craft addicted has never been so popular. We understood that when pictureperfect couple Blake Lively and Ryan R eynolds tied the knot and struck a deal with a magazine like most H ollywood stars about to walk the isle. The difference? It wasn’t Time that scored the exclusive, but Martha Stewart Weddings. That’s right, the glam girl who’s the face of Gucci Premiere fragrance turned to Martha Stewart - the queen of arts & crafts & DIY & everything related to domestic bliss. The magazine styled their nuptials (at which Florence Welch played in a barn - yes, barns can be elegant!) and featured the event in their December 2012 issue - that was 3 years ago! Blake and Ryan’s decision to opt for an understated but hugely popular publication which focuses on food, craft projects and entertainment highlights a

trend that has been gaining momentum ever since the financial crisis came to town. Staying in is the new going out and “abode” is not the name of a new hot club, it’s your - you know - house. That’s why we, having been trying our luck with DIY projects for a while now, decided it was the perfect time to share our knowledge with you guys. Because we believe you can totally make coq au vin at home. Or renovate your terrace with your bare hands and the right tools. With everybody madly pinning interior decorating pictures to their Pinterest boards, or busting out their nanna’s sewing machine to whip up their own designer clothes, it seems that this is a trend that’s here to stay. So yes, if you’re a crafts aficionado and you’re looking for some tips of the trade, you’ve come to the right place. Don’t worry, we won’t confuse you with this-is-too-complicated projects. We’re pretty BASIC, you know.

NEW FACE in fashion 8 OCTOBER 2015

Manuela Pungan, the powerhouse behind cool brand MANURÍ is our favorite person this month and in general. We talked to her about what it’s like starting your own business, her design aesthetic and what keeps her motivated to continue on this path. BASICMAG.NET

INTERVIEW

1. CAN YOU TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT HOW MANURÍ GOT STARTED? HOW DID YOU DECIDE THAT YOU WANTED TO BECOME A DESIGNER? WHAT’S YOUR STORY?

And just like that, one fine day I put an ad up, I hired two seamstresses, took out my sketches and started testing fabrics to figure out where I wanted to go with this.”

I can’t really say that I remember how I started, I knew I wanted to do this two years prior actually doing it. Sure, back when I was a kid I liked to modify mom’s clothes to fit my body, but I didn't wear them, I only did it because I found the activity pleasant. But I couldn’t say I wanted to be a designer ever since I was a child, no way. In my last two years working as a fashion stylist, I was thinking about opening a shoe line, actually. Eventually I focused on clothes though. I wanted to open up shop but I never seemed to have the guts to actually do it. There was always something that kept holding me back. Not about designing per se, but about being an entrepreneur, being responsible for employees and such. I remember one day my best friend told me to stop wasting time because life passes and you risk ending up regretting what you didn’t do. And just like that, one fine day I put an ad up, I hired two seamstresses, took out my sketches and started testing fabrics to figure out where I wanted to go with this. I was pretty confused in the beginning.

2. DESCRIBE THE JOURNEY OF CREATING YOUR FIRST PIECE OF CLOTHING.

The first thing I ever made was pink, which is odd be cause if you look at what MANURÍ means now and my aesthetic pink is nowhere to be found. It was a pink dress with leather accents, which I’m still using now. I think deep down I knew what I wanted to do but I didn’t know that I knew. Then I did the same dress in black and that was closer to my idea of MANURÍ and then little by little I put together my first collection. 9 OCTOBER 2015

3. WHAT’S THE CONCEPT BEHIND MANURÍ? HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR DESIGN AESTHETIC?

Rock chic. A mix of contradictions. Ba sically, I match opposite elements – elements that seem to not belong toge ther. And this comes from my experi ence as a fashion stylist, where I had to come up with unique and creative out fits and combinations. I want women to look and feel great in a MANURÍ item, to be sensual and seduc tive – high heels or not. I’ve used a lot of black and white and gray in my previous collections, but recently I’m thinking about incorporating more color into my work. It’s actually the first year I’ve worn bright yellow and didn’t feel appalled by it, so we’ll see where this takes me.

4. WHAT MAKES MANURÍ CLOTHES DIFFERENT FROM OTHER FASHION DESIGNERS?

I don’t know how to answer this. Maybe you should ask the women who tell me they would recognize my clothes in an instant, maybe they know better. I think they’re different because I’m different. There’s a lot of me in what I’m creating.

5. WHAT DO YOU HAVE IN STORE FOR US FOR THE FALL COLLECTION?

It’s going to be a bit warmer – I’m introducing natural fur for the first time. There’s also going to be gold – it’s the first time I’m using it. I’m usually more of a silver fan, but I think it looks great. A lot of metal, open back mini dresses that are seventies inspired. It’s a bit more glam, and that’s because I’m feeling more feminine lately. I’m somehow going back to my roots because my first collection has also been quite glam. BASICMAG.NET

6. HOW DOES THE PROCESS OF STARTING A NEW COLLECTION LOOKS LIKE?

10 OCTOBER 2015

MANURÍ mini fishnet dress with lace inserts and fringes, $393,70, www.manuri.ro

I find inspiration in a lot of places. A google search, the line in a movie, a song, an object that speaks to me, a vacation that sets the mood for creativity, you name it. I’ve got a lot of Kurt Cobain and Studio 54 pictures gath ered in a folder on my desktop. Then comes the moment you actually decide where you want to go with it. Then you order fabrics, you do sketches. I modify my sketches as I go. Sometimes what looks great on paper doesn’t look so good on a real body, and the other way around – I’ve had sketches that I didn’t believe in that much but that have turned out to be great ones. I do it little by lit tle, a touch here, a brush there. I could never do 30 sketches, do the clothes and see where they take me; it’s just not my way of working. Actually, all my collections rely on 5 major pieces and everything else derives from them. But I do start working really early. No sooner I finish a collection that I’m already thinking what to do for the next one. But yeah, it’s a process, there’s nothing set in stone. BASICMAG.NET

7. TALKING ABOUT THE CAREER AS A DESIGNER, WHAT DO YOU FIND THE MOST REWARDING?

9. THIS SUMMER YOU’VE SHOWCASED YOUR DESIGNS IN LONDON. HOW IMPORTANT IT IS FOR YOU TO It’s kind of a no-brainer but I love to see people’s EXPOSE YOUR DESIGNS TO AN joy when they’re wearing my clothes, I love re INTERNATIONAL AUDIENCE?

ceiving thank you notes, women telling me the dress had been absolutely fabulous – you can’t not feel awesome when this happens. I have cli ents who don’t live in Romania and who tell me people are stopping them in the street to ask them where they got their clothes from. When you re alize you’re doing a good thing, it’s incredible. In the end, public opinion is paramount and we all need confirmations – especially designers. Any way, on a different note, I do also love being able to sleep for as long as I want, not being forced to put up an alarm. Feels great. It relaxes me a lot, and this is one of the reasons why I can create. I never function well under stress.

8. THE FASHION INDUSTRY IS FIERCELY COMPETITIVE - HOW DIFFICULT IT IS TO SEPARATE YOURSELF FROM OTHER BRANDS?

It was a very important step for me, one I’ve been meaning to take for quite some time. Especial ly since I’ve been getting a ton of international orders on my e-shop. I’ve got a couple of plans for growing internationally, I hope they’ll come through.

10. CAN YOU GIVE ANY WORDS OF ADVICE FOR THOSE WHO ARE JUST STARTING AS DESIGNERS? HOW TO START AND WHERE TO FOCUS IN THE BEGINNING?

It depends on how they want to start. Those who study arts will figure it out sooner. I think many new designers err because they’re too abstract.

I don’t see others as a threat. I don’t really care about what other brands are doing. I’m not scared because, as I’ve told you earlier, my creations are based on myself, and there isn’t anybody quite exactly like me, right? But yeah, it’s going to get tougher because all niches are going to get more crowded as years go by. The international mar ket especially comes with a lot of competition, you’ve got to raise the bar really high to stay valid on these markets. The Romanian market is easier to tackle.

ome of the most delicious foods can make indulgent natural beauty treats. Cacao, cinnamon, coffee, honey, vanilla and mint create luxurious scrubs and powerful moisturizers.

They’re simple to make at home – and almost good enough to eat! Here are three gorgeous recipes for you to try out for yourself!

2. AVOCADO MASK Drop the tortilla chips and use this guacamole lookalike face mask to deeply moisturize your face in winter.

1. HONEY, YOGURT AND CREAM OF WHEAT MASK If you have sensitive skin, this gently exfoliating mask will clean your pores and nourish your skin. • 3 tbsp. natural yoghurt • 3 tbsp. cream of wheat • 1 tbsp. raw honey Mix together and spread evenly over your face and décolletage. Leave for 20 minutes and gently wash off.

15 OCTOBER 2015

• 1 avocado • 1 egg white • 2 tbsp. oatmeal • 1 tsp. fresh lemon juice Mix all the ingredients together and apply liberally to face. Leave on for approximately 15 to 20 minutes then rinse with warm water. Treat your skin with this truly moisturizing recipe and you’ll have softer, suppler skin in no time.

3. DETOXIFYING MOCHA MASK The caffeine from coffee grounds in this cocoa-licious mask helps to reduce swelling and puffiness, while the antioxidants in the cocoa help to reduce aging, and the yogurt replenishes lost moisture. • 2 tbsp freshly ground coffee • 2 tbsp pure cocoa powder • 1 tbsp honey • 3 tbsp yogurt or sour cream Blend all of the ingredients together, spread evenly over skin, and allow it to sit for about 10 minutes. When you rinse it off, massage your face gently to exfoliate as well. If you didn’t use all of it on your face, use the leftovers – doubled with some water – to scrub the back of your arms and any other body part that could do with some smoothing. BASICMAG.NET

It’s easy to assume nail art is too hard to achieve without a team of trained pro fessionals. While that might have been the case when the trend exploded back in 2012, there are definitely more subdued designs that can be DIY’d at home now. For example, to achieve this color block look, which resembles Matisse’s Snail, all you need is some binder reinforcements and your favorite nail polishes. Sure, it might take a while until you paint all of them in so many shades, but you’ll get there. There’s an easier way out though: use nail wraps! Go over at goscratch.it and choose the Shape Up nail wrap.

If you’re feeling creative and you know your way around the pen and paper, you can transfer this creativity and craftsmanship to your manicure. Draw leaves on your nails (after coating them with your favorite nail polish - preferably in a subtle tone), then finish off with a top coat to make sure the leaves stay in place for as long as possible.

Coat nails with pastel nail polish (hey, who says that just because summer is gone we can’t wear pretty colors?) and wait for it to dry. Then, with a nail pen, draw hearts with the same nail polish, but one or two shades darker. Finish it up by writing your own cool mantras. This has a particularly rainbow-y effect and will, literally, brighten your day just by looking at it.

IT’S A SKIN THING

Now’s the time to find out exactly what has been keeping your complexion far from flawless.

aise your hand if you have been there: your eyes are looking into the mirror, running over every single centimetre of your skin, while your mind struggles to understand what is it that you’re doing wrong. Perhaps your cheek is housing small red pinches from trying to remove yet another pimple. Maybe your chin has a breakout that doesn’t match the rest of your otherwise smooth skin. Or you just don’t look as fresh in the AM as you swore you used to. Our skin’s bad behaviour can generally be linked to something more complex that overactive pores. Here’s how to play your own skin sleuth and find out what’s vexing your visage.

BASICMAG.NET

1.

SENSITIVITY How to spot it There are a lot of environmental factors that cause the skin to become sensitised: the sun, stress, medication, smoking, alcohol, pollution and incorrect product usage, just to name a few. To determine which is affecting your skin, monitor your face, paying attention to when changes occur - for example, if irritation happens after cleansing or after a long night at the office.

How to fix it First and foremost, be gentle. Follow the less rule: less product (keep it simple), less time (don’t spend too much time touching and treating your skin), less friction (avoid scrubs), and less heat (from long showers, baths and saunas). If you find your cleanser is leaving you red-faced, swap it for a milk or creambased product such as Paula’s Choice Skin Recovery Softening Cream Cleanser, $42 (1), or a gentle makeup remover like La Roche-Posay Effaclar Purifying Micellar Water for Oily Sensitive Skin, $25 (2). If your skin loses its cool throughout the day, carry a facial mist such as Jurlique Calendula Redness Rescue Calming Mist, $38 (3), as a temporary calming solution. Always choose products specifically designed for sensitive skin, including masks, which promise to nourish and heat like Avène Antirougeurs Calm Redness Relief Soothing Repair Mask, $42 (4).

2. 4.

3. LACK OF SLEEP How to spot it No surprises here: a lack of ZZZs can cause major face break-outs. Sleep is the time of growth, repair and rejuvenation, so if your skin is very dull and lacking lustre, this can be the cause. The best way to tell if sleep deprivation is the main reason for your skin situation is to look out for those dark under-eye circles.

How to fix it Ideally, get more sleep. But if that isn’t as easy as it should be, combat your problem with a new skincare routine. Look for a regenerating night-time oil such as Estée Lauder Advanced Night Repair Syncronized Recovery Complet II, $62 (1). Essential oils, combined with collagen- stimulating peptides, will help stimulate the skin and help the process of repair. Products that increase cell turnover will also help get your face back on track. Creams with hydroxyl acids such as Philosophy Hope in a Jar night, $42 (2), and those which promote skin regeneration such as Chanel Sublimage La Crème Texture Fine, $390 (3), are perfect for your skin. Consider upping your nutrient intake too. If you’re not getting enough sleep, be sure to drink water and have a diet rich in fruits, vegetables and essential fatty acids.

BASICMAG.NET

EXHAUSTION How to spot it While short-term fatigue will show up on your face in the same way as stress, serious exhaustion is a different ball game. Long-term stress - like that caused by a stressful job - may appear as hyperpigmentation. This would be on the sides of the neck and around the perimeter of the face in a blotchy appearance. Been wondering why you’ve got dark patches you never used to? Well, this could be it.

4. EMOTIONAL STRESS

How to fix it

How to spot it Break-ups, breakdowns… the way we feel affects way more than our hearts and tear ducts. Breakouts from stress normally appear on the sides of the neck - just under the jaw, near the ear area. These breakouts can be quite large, raised, painful bumps that take a while to come to a head. But apparently it doesn’t stop there - stress spots can also appear on the temples and upper forehead. Ugh.

How to fix it As you’re dealing with some serious spots, the best thing to do is look for products designed for adult acne. Anti-bacterial products like Dermatologica MediBac Special Clearing Booster, $65 (1), work to keep pores clean, as do cleansers containing salicylic acid such as Neutrogena Oil-Free Acne Stress Control Power-Cream Wash, $15 (2). Carry and use a medicated spot treatment to minimise the severity and length of each breakout. Apply a heavy duty treatment such as Clinique Even Better Clinical Dark Spot Corrector, $40(3). As an alternative to this, try a concealer such as Smashbox Photo Finish More Than Primer Blemish Control, $42(4).

2. 3. 1.

24 OCTOBER 2015

If pigmentation is the issue, avoid products that contain artificial fragrance and don’t spray perfume on your neck, as both are known to cause pigmentation - and who needs more of something they already have and don’t want? Beyond applying SPF daily, look for lightening and brightening products such as Olay Regenerist Luminous Tone Perfecting Daily Treatment, $68 (1), and Clarins Bright Plus Intensive Brightening Serum, $73 (2), which both work to visibly fade dark spots, while improving your skin tone and clarity.

2.

1. YOUR HORMONES How to spot it Sometimes being a girl has its drawbacks, like hormo nal challenges, which can take a toll on your skin. The placing of breakouts can often indicate a hormonal imbalance. For example, spots on either side of the chin relate to ovaries.

How to fix it You can help balance your hormones naturally through diet, with the advice of a naturopath or GP. When it comes to looking for skincare products, look for those formulated to target acne and breakouts, in addition to creams which boast illuminating properties such as Aveeno Positively Radiant Intesive Night Cream, $20. You can’t brave the big smoke without a stylish pair of shades. Thankfully, the unofficial king of city style, Erdem, has teamed up with Linda Farrow to create these fresher than fresh sunglasses.

Man-style brogues are the perfect alternative to wearing ballet flats. Try a metallic pair that can be worn day or night.

DESERT GLAMPING We’ve all been camping, but have you tried glamping yet? Camping in lavish style is next on our bucket list, so we’ve made sure our outfit is as glamourous as it is practical.

Thanks to the glam part of this camping experience, your wardrobe doesn’t have to be limited to khaki trousers. If you’re out in the desert or another place where the temperature is ridiculously hot, you’ll want to keep cool and comfortable during the day this flowing maxi will do the trick

ISLAND GETAWAY 1

Sun, sand and total relaxation - that’s about all you will have time for on this kind of sabbatical. The key to nailing the island look is to always keep things chic and simple. Forget the summer dress ( for one second) and add a fun playsuit to your beachwear. It not only possesses the ability to be stylish and casual, but is great for running from your hotel to the pool to the beach, and back to the pool. Oh, and the bar, too. You’re going to be in your bikini pretty much all day, every day, so push your style limits by trying a bolder print. Also, sporty crop tops are set to burn hot this season - so hit the surf in them right now.

thing she would never wear.

42 OCTOBER 2015

BASICMAG.NET

1. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE? My personal style is a basic and simple way of dressing, with a focus on shape or fabric. It closely relates to me being rather introverted. I hate to be the center of attention (yeah, I know: why the hell did I start blogging ;), so I’ll never be the girl dressing in glittery dresses with fringes to top. But I like to create a bit of friction between the items I wear: androgynous trousers with heels, flared jeans with oversized minimal blouses. As long as I can add some unexpected details to my outfit I’m more than happy to wear non-colors in a toned-down way.

2. WHERE DO YOU GO TO FOR FASHION INSPIRATION? Pinterest, other blogs, magazines, the street. Just about everywhere I guess.

3. WHAT’S YOUR GO-TO OUTFIT FOR WHEN YOU HAVE TO GET READY IN A FLASH? At the moment it’s my black high rise flared jeans, birkenstocks and simple grey tee. Too little time to think about getting dressed.

4. WHAT FASHION TRENDS EXCITE YOU AT THE MOMENT? For this winter Joseph, The Row and Céline are my favorites. Love their oversized layering while keeping it classy at the same time. It’s all about the fabric. And quirky details such as the bell cuffs at Céline. A step further than the super long sleeves we saw last winter: almost no need to wear gloves as your hands would barely be visible.

44 OCTOBER 2015

BASICMAG.NET

I also love the use of brown and dark organic tones in the collection of The Row. After such a long time of black, white and grey, I’d like to incorporate warmer tones such as beige and soft brown this autumn.

5. WHAT FASHION TIPS WOULD YOU GIVE A WOMAN WHO WANTS TO IMPROVE HER STYLE? Find a look you feel truly comfortable wearing and try to tweak it a bit. Maybe a different color tone or a slight change in shapes.

6. WHAT’S THE BEST FASHION ADVICE YOU’VE EVER RECEIVED? Seriously can’t think of any. I’m wondering if I ever got any fashion advice, maybe I’m not a good listener.

HELMUT LANG JACKET ZARA KNITTED TOP MIH JEANS KARA X SSENSE BACKPACK BIRKENSTOCK SANDALS

7. WHAT ARE THE 10 GARMENTS EVERY WOMAN SHOULD HAVE IN HER WARDROBE? Gosh, no idea. That’s so different for everybody!

AGATA BIELEN BRACELET MING YU WANG RING LARSSON & JENNINGS WATCH

8. WHAT ABOUT ACCESSORIES? HOW IMPORTANT ARE THEY IN THE ECONOMY OF A LOOK? For me jewelry is a precious thing to wear. It makes a look more ‘you’ and is less sensitive to ever changing trends.

9. STYLE ICONS? So many random people, but also women like Elin Kling, Charlie May and Jayne Min.

10. WHAT FASHION TRENDS YOU DON’T UNDERSTAND/ WOULD NEVER WEAR? Never say never! But too much fringes in one look just isn’t my thing.

CAKE BASICMAG.NET

Rachael McMahon Rachel is the wonder woman behind Made From Scratch and she’s gracefully agreed to let us in on a little yummy secret: apples (though usually r ather bland in taste) are the most delicious fall fruits! This cake stands proof of. We tried it in our BASIC kitchen as well and it tastes just as good as it looks.

K CHECR HE G BLO

This wonderful cake takes no time at all to make, is delicious while served warm and would be perfect for any autumn picnics or dinner parties! I’m already thinking of making it again, but this time swapping the apples with pears and adding a handful, or two, of fresh blueberries.

INGREDIENTS • 125g butter, room temperature • 1/3 cup brown sugar • 1/3 cup white sugar • 2 whole eggs • 2 eggs separated • juice from 1/2 lemon • 1 2/3 cups plain flour • 1 teaspoon baking powder • 2 apples, peeled and cored • vanila essence • sugar to sprinkle

61 OCTOBER 2015

BASICMAG.NET

RECIPE Preheat oven to 175째C, then butter and flour a 10cm cake pan. In a large bowl, beat together the butter and both sugars until light and fluffy. Add the 2 egg yolks and 2 full eggs to the mixture and beat until well combined, then add the lemon juice. Gradually add the flour and baking powder and mix until smooth and well combined. In another bowl, whisk the 2 egg yolks until stiff peaks form. Using a metal spoon, gently fold the egg whites into the cake mixture until combined. Pour your cake mixture into your prepared cake tin and gently level with the back of a spoon or knife.

62 OCTOBER 2015

For the filling - cut your peeled apples in half and gently cut thin slices into your apple halves, making sure not to go all the way through - you want the halves to stay as one piece. Add a teaspoon of vanilla essence to the cut tops of all apples, before sprinkling with sugar. Then gently push the apple halves into the top of your cake mixture - with the slices facing upwards. Bake for around 35-40 minutes, until a skewer inserted comes out clean. Allow to cool for 10 minutes in the cake tin before serving it with a dollop of freshly whipped cream or yogurt.

I'm currently the food editor at Thoughtfully Magazine and am working on my first cookbook to be published in 2016.

I

wanted something texturally thick, but fluid; slightly sweet, and creamy - almost like a childhood creamsicle, but more nutritionally sound. While I was going for more of a breakfast-y dessert smoothie, than a traditional greens ‘n fruit smoothie, you can surely partake in this drink and still feel light and invigorated. (full of probiotics ---> happy belly!), hydrating coconut water, various citrus fruits for color and flavor, some warming nuggets of fresh ginger, a bit of maple syrup to round out the acidity; some chia seeds, bee pollen, and turmeric for their lovely anti-inflammatory properties and amino acids. Basically a super high-vibe, slurp-able creamiscle!

BASICMAG.NET

COCONUT CITRUS SUNSHINE SMOOTHIE (GF + V) Usually when I make smoothies I add as I go, which is really what I did here - there's no real math to it, so feel free to start with less and add more as you go. The result of the ingredient amounts below is a fairly fluid smoothie that thickens over time as the chia seeds activate, in about 10 minutes.

MAKES 4 SERVINGS • 1 cup coconut water, cold • 1 cup coconut yogurt (or preferred yogurt) • 1 navel orange, peeled, cut, and seeds removed • 1 ruby red grapefruit, peeled, cut, and seeds removed • 1 blood orange, peeled, cut, and seeds removed • 1-inch piece of fresh ginger, peeled and roughly chopped • 1 tablespoon maple syrup • 1/2 teaspoon ground turmeric, extra to top (1 teaspoon fresh turmeric) • 1 teaspoon chia seeds, extra to top • 1 teaspoon bee pollen, extra to top 65 OCTOBER 2015

hat's the case with this fun and incredibly easy bookcase update. While the contents of a bookcase are often interesting, the piece itself can also have personality - you just have to add it yourself! We accomplished that with a very simple project: adding stripes down the back of our bookcase.

To create a modern and playful look we decided to create an asymmetrical stripe pattern. Once we had nailed the design, the next step was picking our color palette. We picked up on the feminine hues that dotted the room that we knew would also pop against white. A touch of metallic paint added a glam moment to the mix. To add a bit of unexpected texture, we also decided to make one stripe out of washi tape. With our DIY tools and color

Trina McNeilly I live in my childhood home, in a big, small-like, town outside of Chicago, with my southern sweetheart of a husband, 4 lively children, and our kit cat, Theodore. I have a habit of always looking for the lovely. Somedays, I find it in perfectly styled spaces, and other days i find it in the broken places.

Here is what you will need: 1) a copper pipe – whatever length you like 2) scissors 3) ceiling hook – for hanging your finished piece 4) a metal loop from the craft store 5) some wooden beads to add interest 6) yarn – in as many or as few colors as you like. I just recommend thicker texture

I did my sides a bit shorter, and when all of the string was attached I trimmed the entire piece to make a pattern and even it out.

hat we love about this is how much light gets in - it’s basically bathed in light, which

makes the crisp white of the walls and table shine even more powerfully. And to think this room was previously used as storage for Rachael’s bathroom and other renovations around the house - “it was a terrifying mess of a room so it was really lovely and so exciting to finally get it back. Because I was getting busier and busier with Made From Scratch and social media consulting I really needed a space that was just mine and one I could close the door on at the end of the day. So after the room was empty, the fun part of decorating begun! It’s absolutely no surprise that I have a massive soft spot for crisp white, pops of colour, gold and soft pastel and that’s exactly how I wanted my office to be.

I absolutely love to collect and keep things that mean something to me, and above my ever changing mint pegboard are frames filled with beautiful hand-written recipes from my grandma - they mean the world to me as they’re recipes that we used to make together when I was little. Second to the kitchen, it’s one of my favourite rooms in our home as it’s filled with beautiful natural light and looks into our garden - especially after years of working everywhere from the couch, dining room table and, of course when my office was used as storage, with a bath next to me!”

Just press Usually, by October life slows down a bit. It’s cold, it’s gray, it’s mushy - ain’t nobody got time for that! The way I figure it though, the taste for living the life shouldn’t depend on the bitterness of weather. Just go out there and enjoy it, okay?

Oana Befort is one of the most talented illustrators we’ve seen in quite some time. She has a delicacy to her art that’s quite unique these days. Here are her thoughts on drawing, painting and... loving what you do.

BASICMAG.NET

My name is Oana [pronounced ‘Wanna”, but you won’t offend me if you pronounce it a different way :)] and I am the wife of a wonderful man, Jeremy, and the mother of two beautiful children, Samuel and Emma. I am a freelance graphic designer and illustrator with a huge love for photography, design, crafts, style and everything artsy. I am spending my time taking care of our kindred spirited kiddos, working on projects, painting with my watercolors, listening to music, taking photos and enjoying the little things.

1. When did you start doing this? Did you study it in school or was it a hobby that you started developing in time? I loved art and drawing ever since I can remember. I studied fine arts in high school and then graphic design in college, but I have spent the last few years trying to develop my own style. Having a background where I have explored all kinds of media has helped me a lot in deciding the direction that I want to go with my work.

2. Where do you find your inspiration when mood strikes? I gather inspiration mainly from nature, flora, fauna and old botanical books.

3. How long does it take you to do one? Do you sit at your desk and don't get up until you finish or is it a more lengthy process? I work here and there when time allows me, during one day, a few days or weeks. So, depending on each artwork and its complexity, adding everything up, it can take from 30 minutes up to 7-8 hours.

4. What crayons/pencils/watercolors do you use? I use light pencils (like 9H, 2H or B) for the drawings under my illustrations and I use a few watercolor brands. Some of my favorites are Schmincke and Sennelier.

5. Do you have any tips for a beginner in illustration? Practice a lot, work very hard and set goals. Be yourself, finding your own visual voice and not somebody else’s.

6. Where can I buy your art? You can buy some of my art prints (and some originals) from my Etsy store and also from Society6. If you are interested in a specific art piece that is not currently in my shop or if you would like a custom order, please email me.

LOVE NOTES

PHOTO: OANA BEFORT.

This fun little DIY project is brought to you by Oana Befort of oanabefort.com. If you’re feeling loving and want to show a special someone - hands on - just how much you appreciate them, go for it. I am sure that you don’t say “I love you” to your dear ones just once a year, for Valentine’s Day.

91 OCTOBER 2015

BASICMAG.NET

Here’s what you’ll need and how to do it:

1.

First, measure your paper and cut it into 3 pieces ( I used a 8×5 inches/ 300g watercolor paper). Then fold the paper pieces in 2.

2.

Combine 1-2 cups of water and 1 tsp of gouache or watercolor paint then stir. Insert the folded paper in the colored water. Let it dry.

92 OCTOBER 2015

BASICMAG.NET

3.

You can create stronger layers of color by adding from time to time a little more gouache color in the water. Use the paint brush to create new layers. Let it dry then repeat as desired.

When all the color layers are done and dried, cut the angles of the card and the middle top so that it will form a geometric heart shape. Now the note cards are ready to write on! Come on, don’t be shy, pour your heart out. 93 OCTOBER 2015

MOVIE MARATHON Tell me what TV show you love and I’ll tell you what feature film you should be watching this October.

U

sually, fall means two things: it’s sweater season and television is back in full swing. But this doesn’t mean you should turn a blind eye to all the feature films that are to be released this month. Because time is short and TV series (at least some of them) take a whole lot of your time, I’m just gonna go ahead and recommend that you watch only those movies that are in agreement with your favorite TV show. Because honestly, time is limited and Game of Thrones is so much better than… actually, anything.

If you like Penny Dreadful, go and see… Crimson Peak

1.

If you like Big Bang Theory, go and see… Steve Jobs

Who’s more annoyingly brilliant than Sheldon Cooper? Steve Jobs, of course. With his innocent turtlenecks and tiny eyeglasses and big brain, he sure is impossibly cute. Ok, Michael Fassbender, who’s playing the American visionary, might have something to do with the cuteness but still, it’s a brilliant, infuriating and richly unconventional movie. Plus, the script is written by the almighty Aaron Sorkin (who also wrote the Social Network), so the conversations won’t by all means be bland. People called this movie the Birdman of the tech sector and some are strongly convinced that Fassbender’s role is Oscar-worthy, so yeah, take a break from the funny Big Bang Theory crew and go watch this.

95 OCTOBER 2015

I’m a fan of Eva Green and all things supernatural with a touch of horror and macabre. I’m also a big fan of Jessica Chastain and when I heard that the great Guillermo Del Toro had casted her in his latest fantasy horror, Crimson Peak, I almost shrieked. This is a modern day Carrie (at least the poster might lead you in that direction) and it’s a great option for when you’re feeling in the mood for some blood spilling, skin crawling and bone chilling type of cinema. It’s a gothic romance at its best – though it gets weirdly and deeply sexual at some point, if you’re interested in this kind of thing. You won’t regret the hours spent without Eva. Just this once, ok?

3.

If you like House of Cards, go and see… Bridge of Spies

Tom Hanks might not be as ruthless as Kevin Spacey, but Bridge of Spies tackles the same political aspects (and all the fake diplomacy) that House of Cards puts forward with the help of, quite possible, the most masterfully ironic voiceover in TV history. The script is written by the Coen brothers and the direction belongs to Steven Spielberg, so I guess you won’t be that disappointed when the credits start rolling. Plus, who ever in this life refuses to see a movie starring Tom Hanks? I mean, come on, people!

4.

If you like The Affair, go and see… I smile back

The Affair is great, we’re in complete agreement here. I smile back might not be that great – it’s actually a pretty prosaic and trivial drama about addiction, infidelity and the destruction of a family. But you guys, it’s with Sarah Silverman, the great Sarah Silverman! Even though she doesn’t have a great script to work on – the scenes and even the dialogues are quite repetitive – she does a great job and portraying the suburban wife and mother who self-medicated her depression. Please don’t let the overall narrative of the movie put you off. This is the best one-woman-show we’ve ever seen.

5.

If you like True Detective, go and see… Legend

The most impressive thing about True Detective – in both season 1 and 2 – are the characters and their acting. In Legend, we’ve basically got the same thing. If it weren’t for Tom Hardy’s very coherent and powerful differentiation of the twins, this would be just another film celebrating the notoriety of gangsters. Maybe the problem is that the director stupidly chooses to focus on the blah love story, giving the movie the feel of a standard biopic. I don’t know. What I do know is that Tom Hardy as his own psychotic twin is epic. I’d watch that again, no regrets!

6.

If you like Game of Thrones, go and see… The Last Witch Hunter

I’ve never understood what the catch is with Vin Diesel – why is he casted in movies? Any movies? Fortunately, I have no decision power whatsoever in Hollywood, because after seeing The Last Witch Hunter, I can’t possibly picture the movie without him. He does a (literally) magical role here – he is action movie dynamite! I’m not going to tell you any details about the plot other than what you can already understand from the title – witches live among us and one particularly evil witch – The Queen Witch – causes an epic battle that will determine the survival of the human race. Grab that popcorn, it’s gonna be awesome!

LIFESTYLE SOUND CHECK

NEW RELEASES The hottest tunes to add to playlist this October.

DARKSTAR – Foam Island What’s particularly cool about this album is that it contains short interludes of young people talking about what they want from life and what the future holds for them. “I wanted to make it explicit that this was at the heart of the record”, explain James Young and Aiden Whalley, the guys behind Darkstar. As for the album in itself, if you’re a fan of dense, beat-driven, rhythmical, dubstep-inspired sounds, this is right up your alley. My alley is more melodic and focusing on songwriting sensibilities, and the guys manage to do this as well. 98 OCTOBER 2015

After waiting four years for these guys to release their fourth album, I’m pleasantly surprised to see that the wait was considerably shorter for the fifth one. Actually, In Dream happened faster than any other album they’ve recorded so far. I guess they felt the need to prove themselves after The Weight of Your Love received somewhat mixed reviews, which was awfully rare for them. Anyway, enough with the introductions. Just go ahead and listen to this, no questions asked. It marks a new start for the talented English rockers since it’s created so that you can listen to it in one go, from start to finish, like in a dream. Epic win. BASICMAG.NET

EDITORS – In Dream

BORN RUFFIANS – RUFF RUFF, Born Ruffians’ fourth studio album is pretty manic! Pops and fizzles and sounds like fireworks exploding on music. It’s jumpy and takes the bull by the horns, which is not so common for indie rock bands. I mean, when comparing it with their 2013 studio album, Birthmarks, which was polished and presentable, RUFF “is the ugly innards that hide beneath”. They’re also touring extensively up to early December, so keep your eyes peeled – seeing them live is quite the experience, especially if they’re playing songs from this craziness of a record.

THE NEIGHBORHOOD – Wiped out!

HERE WE GO MAGIC – Be Small

The guys behind Sweater Weather, my number one autumn song since they’ve released it, actually remind me of another favorite band of mine – Foals, the only difference being that they blend the rocky tunes with touches of minimalist hip hop, thus giving their tracks (especially R.I.P 2 My Youth – which I’ve listened to on repeat for days already) a vibe that’s both playful and despairing. Pretty cool, actually, I’m more than excited. Can October 30th come any sooner, please? Like, tomorrow?

The Brooklyn indie rockers’ fourth album sees them adopting a more intimate sound and a “smaller approach to production” (they actually produced the album themselves). It’s inspired by Brian Eno and John Cale’s Wrong Way Up and Robert Wyatt’s Shleep, so it can’t be half bad. The album’s lead single, Falling, is rather bubbly and optimistic and maybe too synth-driven for my personal taste, but nevertheless they preserve that weightlessness and elegance to their sound. That’s the kind of music acrobatics I dig.

99 OCTOBER 2015

KEEP SHELLEY IN ATHENS – Now I’m Ready Dreampop duo Keep Shelley in Athens has been a favorite of mine ever since I first listened to their plaintive, yet powerful songs. This October, they’re releasing their second album, Now I’m Ready, brimming with ethereal, synth-driven ballads and lush instrumentation. Makes me want to snuggle with a comfortable blanket and a cup of warm coffee, thinking about the reason of existence and such. Perfect for late October evenings, when all you need is someone to tell you that, yes, you are ready to face these cold nights ahead.

When you need some time away from the craziness that is life, make sure it’s with your favorite book - one that can transport you to the richest, most poorly exploited land there is - your very own imagination. Or pick any book, for that matter. Just read, ok?

We Are Not Ourselves, Matthew Thomas

Expo 58, Jonathan Coe This book felt like watching a high quality British TVmini series: entertaining, well researched, showing up the folly of man. Beautiful prose that flows by very quickly and leaves you wanting more. 100 OCTOBER 2015

All the light we cannot see, Anthony Doerr This is a very special, gut-wrenching read. I’m not going to give you details about it because I want you to maintain your curiosity intact. It’s worth it.

All the bright places, Jennifer Niven

Geek Girl All that glitters, Holly Smale

This novel is so good Elle Fanning is going to play the lead character in a movie that will sadly be released somewhere in 2017. So before that movie arrives in theatres, please read it. Pretty please?

I admit it, I’m a nerd too. And I love to read YA. Yeah, yeah, sue me. This is the fourth book in the award-winning series Geek Girl and promises to be more on the heart-breaking side than the hilarious one. Still good, still fresh and fun. BASICMAG.NET

As difficult as it might seem (after you finish it), this is a debut novel. Don’t be fooled. This was a novel that took 10 years to make. That’s how long the author tweaked at it before gathering the courage to try and publish his manuscript. And it’s one of the greatest novels I’ve read in quite some time. Possibly ever.

CITY GUIDE

PARIS

Things have changed since the sixties, but Paris remains Europe’s fanciest, most romantic and culturally diverse capital. 101 OCTOBER 2015

BASICMAG.NET

F

orget what you’ve heard about this city’s penchant for croissants and ridiculously hard to conjugate verbs: Paris is much more than its tiny coffeeshops and famed Tour Eiffel. With beautiful bridges and rows of tall but narrow houses, it’s arguably one of the most aesthetically pleasing cities in Europe. And its charm extends far beyond its proverbial non-so-friendly residents. Wander the boutique-lined streets of the Marais neighbourhood, spend a culture-filled afternoon gazing at the famous paintings in the Louvre, or wander around the city in search of its best crepes. Whether it’s down to its infectious laissez-faire spirit, freshly brewed coffee or cool new eateries, the appeal of Paris is endless.

WHERE TO LAY YOUR HEAD

Our pick of the fancy hotels and boutique digs • Le Citizen. The first designer boutique hotel on the Canal St Martin is just a few steps from the hipster hangout Hotel du Nord (which is actually a restaurant and bar, not a hotel) and within walking distance of the newly trendy North Marais district. Rooms feature crisp white linens and highend amenities such as iPads and a thoughtfully chosen selection of gourmet snacks in the minibar.

• Hotel Amour.

One of the first designer budget hotels in the South Pigalle district, Hotel Amour is still going strong with its unique artist-decorated rooms that focus more on style than utilities (you’ll find Kiehl’s toiletries, but no TV or phone). You’ll love to hang out in the lobby’s brasserie and large garden terrace, where all the cool people meet. 102 OCTOBER 2015

• L’Hotel. Not only was it originally the home of Oscar Wilde, but it is one of Paris’ chic, hidden hotels in St Germain. Another great thing about it is the fact that every suite here is a different design and look, and that’s what makes it so eclectic.

HIGH-END EATS

With over 70 Michelin-starred restaurants, Paris is a far cry from the meat-and-potatoes stereotype.

• Sol Semilla.

100% vegan and organic restaurant, this rare and wonderful place serves raw food in a welcoming and chic setting. Located a stone’s throw from the Canal St. Martin at 23 rue des Vinaigriers, this is one part restaurant and one part healthy superfood concept store with

products whose ingredients mostly come from South America.

• Le rubis. Hidden away round the corner from the Place Vendôme, this place is completely untouristy, which makes it great. The food is simple French cooking but the wine list is huge and impressive. This is the place to soak up real Paris.

• Le Petit Zinc.

This St Germain des Prés landmark continues to thrive as it has done since the turn of the century. You’ll feel as if you’re having a real Parisian experience since the menu is classic French cuisine. The classic Art Nouveau brasserie style is elegant, with ivy arches, iron banisters to the mezzanine and beautifully-lit glass ceiling fanlights. BASICMAG.NET

rooms and gift boutiques make fun alternatives to stores elsewhere in Paris. Make sure you visit Passage Jouffroy, which houses Musée Grévin, Paris’ answer to Madame Tussauds.

4PM Nature lovers and those who like to indulge in a bit of park life will definitely love a stroll in the Parc des Buttes Chaumont. Set high up in Belleville and often missed by weekenders keen not to stray too far from the tourist loop, this 19th arrondissement gem is one of the city’s most magical spots.

THE ULTIMATE CULTURE HIT-LIST

In a city packed with museums and galleries, you need a plan of attack. Here’s our edit.

9AM Line up early at the Louvre, because it has galleries and wings so vast you could easily spend a day feasting your eyes on treasures like the Mona Lisa, the Venus de Milo and Egyptian mummies - not to mention the building itself, which sports amazing architecture remodelled over the centuries by the rulers of France. When you get tired of the cultural stuff, relax with a cocktail in the Café Mollien.

11AM

Centre Pompidou, home to modern art treasures by the likes of Matisse and Ernst, is a must as well. If you’re a frequent visitor of Paris, the fact that the art exhibitions are ever-changing will ensure you’re always surprised when going there. You can come back after closing time, when Georges, Pompidou’s trendy rooftop bar, serves cocktails in a futuristic setting with panoramic views over the city.

Dragged your boyfriend to the shops? Then it’s only fair to take one for the team and head to the Stade of France. Football and rugby fans will absolutely love the behindthe-scenes tour of France’s handsome national sports stadium.
