The 7 Co-op Principles: Democratic Control Did you know your co-op is governed by a democratically elected, volunteer board made up of five Basics Co-op Owners? Democratic Governance is the second principle of the internationally recognized Seven Co-op Principles. Pictured, at right, are current Basics Co-op Board president Jim Hutchinson, vice president Sverre David Roang, secretary Clarice Green, Dr. Carrie Kaiser, and S.A. Welch. Our board meets every other month to establish policies to advance the mission and goals of the Co-op. As a group they are the elected stewards of our community-owned asset, responsible for any major plans or commitments, long-term financial planning,

and accountable empowerment of the general manager. These duties are part of a board model called policy governance. Under policy governance, decisions related to daily operations or organizational issues (Means) are delegated to the general manager and hired staff, so that the board can focus on policies to achieve the Co-op’s bigger picture goals (Ends). How does a co-op board’s purpose differ from that of a corporation? Co-ops are organized to benefit their owners, who, in our case, are also the customers. Fairness, transparency and equity are prioritized more than financial returns. The main purpose of a corporate, or for-profit, board is to ensure profitability for shareholders and employees. Did You Know? Organic Packaged Foods “USDA Organic” versus “100% Organic” versus “Made with Organic” We hear many myths and rumors about organic foods. Contrary to some of them, the USDA certified organic seal (above) is still a uniquely reliable source to find out whether ingredients were grown or produced according to organic standards, and verified by a third party. (The most reliable, of course, is getting to know your local producers!) Here is a quick primer on organic food labels:

February Staff Anniversaries

Only foods that are 95-100% organic (and GMO-free) can use the USDA Organic seal. 100% Organic – made with 100% organic ingredients, may display USDA Organic seal Organic – at least 95% organic ingredients, may display USDA Organic seal

Co-op Principles (cont’d from p. 1) How can a Basics Co-op Owner join the Board? Basics board members are elected to staggered two-year terms by their fellow Basics Co-op Owners. Each year either two or three of the five seats are up for election. To run for board, eligible Basics Owners (fully vested or up-to-date on payments) submit answers to the following three questions which are published on the ballot: 1.) Why do you want to be elected to the Basics Cooperative Board? 2.) What special skills or experience will you bring to the Board? 3.) What role do you think Basics offers in our community? Voting takes place each year in May, and results are announced at the annual meeting each June. All Basics Owners are encouraged to participate! Whether you run for Board, take the time to vote in May, write to the Board or just drop feedback in the suggestion box, your participation is the key to democratic cooperative governance.
