Meet the Board Candidates Jaleh Dabiri Why do you want to be elected to the Basics Cooperative Board? I have had a long connection with Basics, beginning with the original owner Peter in the 90’s. I helped educate interested customers on the Mediterranean diet using fresh produce, cheeses like feta, and other Mediterranean foods at the store. More recently, in the spring of 2016 I again taught cooking classes at Basics. I value the mission of Basics. I think Basics is not just a store – it represents a way of life, as far as food and culture. What special skills or experience will you bring to the Board? I have lived in Janesville since 1995. I struggled to find the variety of spices I needed for my Mediterranean and Middle Eastern cooking, until I found them all at Basics! I have taught cooking for 20 years. I have knowledge on real food, health, organics, locally grown, and how to eat right without it being too expensive. What role do you think Basics Co-op offers in our community? Basics brings our community together, offering a variety of fresh healthy foods, foods from different countries, and showcasing food and culture all over the store. I respect the staff, as they are very helpful and welcoming to all.
Joyce Bush Why do you want to be elected to the Basics Cooperative Board? I would like to have the privilege of being elected to the Basics Cooperative Board to help make a difference in the health of people's lives. What special skills or experience will you bring to the Board? I am a good listener, well organized, able to find a way to get things done, a team player, and I can lead and follow. I have been a teacher for 18 years. I would bring new ideas and a fresh mind to help. What role do you think Basics Co-op offers in our community? I believe Basics offers our community a gateway to healthier living. It provides healthier alternatives in food, vitamins, personal care and household products.

Meet the Board Candidates S.A. Welch Why do you want to be elected to the Basics Cooperative Board? I believe in the mission of the Basics Cooperative. I see its mission as providing safe food, supplements, and resources for promoting healthy lifestyles. Being a Board member would allow me the opportunity to work closely with others to help Basics continue to succeed in serving the needs of the community. The most important thing I learned during my first term on the Board was how integral Basics’ employees are to accomplishing that mission, and a primary goal of the Board should be providing support to them in accomplishing Basics' mission. What special skills or experience will you bring to the Board? I have served on two nonprofit organizations as a board member (one term on the Basics Board of Directors and three years on the board of a ballet company in Florida). I have an accounting background and worked in two different CPA firms. I am currently a professor in the Communication Department at UW-Whitewater, with an emphasis in corporate communication. These diverse backgrounds allow me to work with both the financial issues and corporate communication issues involved in Cooperatives. What role do you think Basics Co-op offers in our community? When I first moved to the area, a friend recommended Basics to me as an interesting, informative, and inviting place. This description is still fitting. I see Basics as serving individuals with unique dietary needs (for example, gluten free foods, fair trade products, and organic produce). Basics offers all of these while maintaining a friendly and supportive environment for those seeking resources not readily available elsewhere. The employees’ knowledge and customer-service skills are the face of Basics, and they provide the answers to the questions our community members have about the resources Basics offers. With all of these qualities, Basics serves the community as a vital component of healthy living.
Jim Hutchinson Why do you want to be elected to the Basics Cooperative Board? I would like to be re-elected to the Basics Cooperative Board because I feel that Basics, as I know it, parallels many of my beliefs and values. I am a lifetime organic gardener and have a “heal thyself” approach to health care. I see my diet, exercise and relationships as playing an extremely important part of very good health throughout my life. I see Basics as supporting these ideals. As a continuing Board member I would be working to further these ideals within our community. What special skills or experience will you bring to the Board? I have forty years of experience working for and on Boards of nonprofit organizations, in just about every capacity, including Director, Board member, Board Chairperson, Treasurer, Secretary and communications coordinator. Our current business provides accounting, management and administrative services for nonprofits. I believe my work representing the cooperative members in the purchase of Basics provided a valuable service. I would like to continue this service on the Board. I am an independent thinker and can be fairly creative in terms of vision and issue resolution. I like working with people to reach the solution that meets the needs of as many people as possible. What role do you think Basics Co-op offers in our community? Intricately tied to eating and health is the community in which one lives. A Community can feed and nurture the emotional environment in which we live. Basics has been an incredibly important part of my community since it opened on West Court Street. I have always felt cared about and for at Basics. The people at Basics actually care about how I am and go out of their way to help when I need it. I think the caring and alternative to a “sugar and medicine” approach to living is one of the most valuable contributions to our community. Basics has been a leader in this respect, in a holistic way. In addition, as our Governmental agencies, such as the FDA, continue to fail to protect us and offer us informed choices about our food, the role that Basics plays in providing clean, healthy, unadulterated food becomes critically important. As a Board member I will continue to help keep Basics a vibrant nourishing organization for the body and soul.

Meet the Board Candidates Fern Rasmussen Why do you want to be elected to the Basics Cooperative Board? During the last forty years, I have had the "time of my life" searching for the source of good health. Basics Co-op has been a large part of those years, beginning in the mid-1970's when the store opened. When I lost a close family member prematurely, even though seeking medical aid, I knew there had to be another pathway to abounding well-being and freedom from disease. In discovering diets, treatments, and products, and putting them into practice, I found a whole other world of exciting evidence that illness is truly avoidable, that the power that put us together in our mother's womb continues long after birth. The body is made to take care of itself; we need only to understand and cooperate with its intelligence. What special skills or experience will you bring to the Board? My claim for offering myself as a Board member is my experience in healthful living, my conviction of its truths, and a desire to share with and encourage others. My former life was as a vocal music teacher in Wisconsin public schools, interspersed with secretarial employment, ministerial assistance, and finally retiring from office work at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. I also briefly engaged in running a mini-business of my own. What role do you think Basics Co-op offers in our community? Basics is a great name for a health food store, because there are basic truths about how the body functions. Once we learn and follow them, we lay the foundation for building and maintaining our bodies with the very best structural components.
