Car-pooling: A UX design problem Background: The ever increasing fuel prices and growing environmental concerns are compelling us to think of sustainable and affordable mobility solutions like carpooling or ridesharing. In this era of social networking, carpooling not only makes travel cheaper and environmental friendly, but also gives Strategy chance to connect with new people. There are already number of online sites and apps available for carpooling, used by regular daily commuters mainly for home-office-home travels. However other Strategy is where it all begins: what I want travelers also use it for odd pickups and drops or travelers who are looking for company on long to get out of this ? what problem I am distant travels. Although the response for this idea has been overwhelming, there are few primary solving. What do my users needs etc. concerns such as: Safety: A certain segment of people do not feel comfortable travelling with total strangers. Especially women who need to travel during odd hours have concerns of safety. Timing: There could be sudden instances like change in office timings or late overstay in office, etc. which may affect your routine travel plans. Cost: Sharing a car ride with other people means sharing the fuel costs. There could be additional charges also involved like car maintenance, tyre puncture, etc. Travelers registering online are always curious to know the payment distribution terms beforehand to avoid conflicts later. Design opportunity: With the consistent increase in the multi-screen interactions, more and more daily tasks are being carried out seamlessly over desktop, mobile and other form factors. So there is an urgent need for highly intuitive software applications that help users to complete their tasks with ease across devices as a seamless experience. Our final objective is to design a system or an application for web mobile or multi-screen experience for booking/availing a carpooling facility that would address all the above mentioned primary concerns of a traveler. It would also be good to have some interest elements that would make the overall user experience more engaging (eg. Carbon footprint, etc.)
UX- methodology Followed STEP- 1 Research Information gathering based on the project brief /Strategy created. A dip- stick study has done on the trend and similar apps like Uber, Side Car, Lift etc. I have put an attempt to gather information from original user like car owners who put their car for pooling and people who use carpooling in Rajeev Gandhi info park. Pune Based on the research I have made a Mind map to explore the ideas and pain points of users.
Dipstick Trend study/ User Reviews “Tripda is a very innovative concept! I Use tripda for my commute between Mumbai and Pune very frequently. Customer support is brilliant and the rides are genuine.” “Fake Application This application doesn't work when you want to offer a ride, it says enter promo code. Firstly I didn't understand why I need a promo for publishing a ride, the promo code will not be send to you after long wait, I was trying to offer a ride 3days back till date I haven't received any SMS for that promo code or any SMS from tripda.” “Won't even let me sign up This app is crap compared to Uber. Actually it's crap just by itself. It keeps telling me my phone # is invalid when I tried to sign up, which is funny considering I pay a legitimate phone company money each month for it and I talk on it just about every day. Sure seems valid to me. Uber was a breeze, Lyft won't even let me register.” “Would be nice if I could schedule a ride. I use Uber very frequently and never have any issues.” “Complicated The app is little complicated make it user-friendly. Too many clicks” “Finally, an easy way to order a car in a foreign city Tried finding a taxi app in San Diego. Issue after issue with multiple apps. Getting a taxi shouldn't be this hard. Have up and tried Uber - as easy as the others were difficult. Car arrived in about 2 mins and my short ride only cost about $4. Consider me converted.” “Fix it Make the auto-zoom and auto-re center optional on the map.. There should be some sort of compensation for passengers that are too drunk and stupid to submit a request to be picked up at the correct location.. Although I guess I could just rider no-show them after five minutes instead being the nice guy that I am continuing to figure out where they are.. Also let the app stay running and logged in, in the background until a request is missed. Location only updates when the app is open in the foreground.” “Not able to submit background check. Not able to submit background check. Even tried on ios. I type in my SS #, check box, and push submit. Nothing happens. ios says internal server error”

Mind MAP Mind map helps to understand
STEP-2 UX- Design Mind map and Persona helped me to identify more details about the user requirements and aspirations. I have created a persona to visualize the pain points in real context. Base on that I have used a card sorting technique to get more clarity on the requirements and solutions which the user is looking for. Based on the data I have identified key user goals and decided on the key features that might support the user to achieve the goal. I selected the mobile device to create the wire frame. I have used Mobile first principal, as I have assumed it as a Responsive web app. A scenario/ use case has created and a particular task flow has been show cased in the coming pages. After finalizing the use case I have decided on the Information Architecture and Navigation pattern. I have used a drill down character and side panel drawer menu to add the features.

STEP-3 Wire frames/ Visual design I have created a rough paper prototype to ideate the scenario. Once I had clear idea about the screens, I have replicated the screens in Power point to give a look and feel of the application using Samsung galaxy 4 as template. I have created only one pages in Photoshop to show my VD Skills. It is attached separately with the ppt.
