F O R E W O R D B Y C L L R G AV I N C A L L A G H A N , LEADER OF BASILDON COUNCIL Basildon is at an exciting point in its history. As we near the end of a year-long celebration of the New Town’s 70th birthday, it is the right time to look to the future, by building on the best of our history to make a town that works for everybody.

At the heart of all of this is our town centre. Crafted as a testament to the New Town ideal, our town centre may have its challenges, but it has even more opportunities, and we are determined to create a place that forms the focal point for the future of the entire borough.

So, our ambitions are big, matched only by our commitment to making this vision a reality. But we know we will not get there alone. For a town built on the ideals of community, collaboration and togetherness, it is only fitting that we look for partners to come with us on this journey.

If you stand at Tower Bridge, and look east down the Thames all the way to the sea, only Canary Wharf has a bigger economy than Basildon. This success is built on the back of a culture of hard work, entrepreneurialism and innovation, with hundreds of startups combining with multinational companies to provide a resilient mixed economy.

Our vision is to create a town centre that builds on the best of the historic architecture and takes us into a new era of sustainable, inclusive growth. We want a high street that is vibrant and meets the needs of residents, visitors and businesses alike. We want a nighttime economy that serves all the diverse communities we are lucky enough to have in the borough. And we want to see innovative approaches to the use of public spaces, the incorporation of business space, and the provision of homes to create a place for everyone.

So, if you share our ambitions of sustainable growth, shared prosperity, and a Basildon that is a place for everyone, and you have the expertise and resources to help us deliver them, I have one question for you:

Basildon is blessed with unrivalled accessibility, by road, rail and air. Less than ten miles away from the M25, and with immediate access to the key east-west routes of the A13 and A127, Basildon is the central hub within a corridor of commercial activity. The town also has fast, direct access to London Fenchurch Street, and is within 40 minutes of three international airports.

I Believe in Basildon – do you?

Cllr Gavin Callaghan Leader of Basildon Council
