Emergency Oxygen Practice Sheet Instructions: Provide each student with a practice sheet. Use a volunteer or yourself as the ‘patient.’ Equipment list: use at least 1 each of the following: nasal cannula, non-rebreather mask, bag mask, oxygen cylinder with pressure regulator. Practice Session 1: Calculate Respirations Per Minute (RPM): Watch the Instructor or pair up to practice assessing the respiratory rate. While the ‘patient’ sits up in a chair and breathes normally, calculate the RPM.

   

Use a stopwatch, second hand or other timer Count the number of breaths by watching the patient’s chest for 15 seconds Multiply the number of breaths in 15 seconds x 4 Record Number of Breaths: ________ X 4 = ________ RPM

Practice Session 2: Connect Pressure Regulator

 Assess environment and equipment to ensure safe for use.  Clear cylinder valve: Slowly open and close the valve to expel particles. Use an oxygen wrench if needed.  Attach pressure regulator: Insert o-ring, line up regulator pins w/ holes on valve, slip regulator over valve. Attach regulator using thumbscrew until hand tight.

 Charge pressure regulator: Turn pressure gauge away from rescuer and bystanders, open valve (counterclockwise) one full turn.

 Check Equipment: Read pressure gauge to determine amount of oxygen in cylinder, listen to tank to ensure an airtight seal. Practice Session 3: Delivery Devices Nasal Cannula

   

Connect tubing to regulator. Adjust flow rate to 6 LPM. Listen for flow of oxygen. Carefully insert prongs, wrap each side around ears, and secure adjusting band. Instruct patient to breath normally, inhaling through the nose as much as possible.

Non-Rebreather Mask

    

Select correct size mask based on manikin or volunteer. Ensure cylinder valve is open; connect oxygen tubing. Select flow rate of 15 LPM; listen for flow of oxygen. Place thumb or finger over one-way valve inside mask until oxygen reservoir is filled. Place mask over face, starting at bridge of nose. Ensure mask fits over mouth and nose; apply elastic band so mask fits snugly.

 Instruct patient to breathe as normally as possible. Bag Mask Assembly

   

Select correct size bag and mask based on manikin or volunteer. Assemble bag mask: Attach face mask to top of bag; ensure bag is fully expanded; attach oxygen reservoir to base of bag. Connect oxygen tubing to pressure regulator. Select flow rate of 15 LPM. Listen for flow of oxygen.
