DUTCH DESIGN WEEK WHAT AN HONOR!

Program: Location: Period: Client:

Installations, lectures, book launch, workshops Eindhoven (The Netherlands) October 21-29th, 2017 Dutch Design Foundation

About:

DDW The biggest design event in Northern Europe presents work and ideas of more than 2600 designers to more than 335,000 visitors from home and abroad. In more than hundred locations across the city, DDW organises and facilitates exhibitions, lectures, prize ceremonies, networking events, debates and festivities. MVRDV As one of the ambassadors for Dutch Design Week 2017 Winy Maas co-curated together with MVRDV, The Why Factory, Municipality of Eindhoven, Technical University Eindhoven, DDW, De Projectstudio and many others four interventions in Eindhoven exploring Future City Products.

w(e)go installation at marktplein

3,500 VISITORS

The future city is flexible. Have you ever dreamed of sleeping suspended high in the air? How would it feel to sleep inside a vertical hanging garden? What if your room was made of stairs? Would you dare to sleep in a room that was a billboard? Or inside a shimmering grotto? What is your dream room? In this installation, nine rooms are made to fulfil these idealistic but egoistic perspectives in a limited space. When confronted with the dreams of others, users must learn to negotiate with each other. How to defend your ideals? Users start to work with and around each other and, somehow, together create something that is even nicer. And with the surrounding intrusions and negotiations, one begins to feel that something interesting is happening ‘next door.’ Why not visit your neighbour? Thus, Ego becomes W(E)go. The (W)ego installation represents a frozen moment in the living and flexible (W)ego vision. In (W)ego a research platform from The Why Factory, future urban dwellings are capable of adapting in real time to the users’ needs. This vision is detailed in a film that plays in one of the rooms of (W)ego. (W)ego shows that evolutionary and flexible architecture is possible. That the most perfect situation can be achieved at every moment, leading to an even more optimal use of our limited urban space.

Project leader Oversee all MVRDV matters regarding DDW Budget control, planning, contact with client, (inter) national press relations, MVRDV design teams, external design teams, contractors, personal assistant Winy Maas, production, PR strategy, July - October (2017) After a great success of the MVRDV Office Opening Event in April 2017 Bastiaan was asked to fulfill the role of project leader where he would focus on translating ideas and request by principal Winy Maas into practical solutions and outcomes and on the other hand would strive for the best PR exposure value possible during the DDW 2017. In this dual role he had to find the balance between managing design teams (internally and externally) as well as keeping contact with for instance clients, contractors and (inter)national press. His daily tasks varied from budget control, planning, setup press agendas, implementing PR strategies, external and internal meetings, online/offline content, production, etc. To keep the overview and guide all matters in the correct direction while being faced with a very short amount of time, low budget, short amount of team members and a lot of daily changes, he always had to be alert to keep the aimed quality at the same level or higher. This asked him to be anticipative, flexible, and most of all being stress resistant, due to a certain amount of daily pressure. As a result, MVRDV and its collaborators were able to provide the DDW with a colourful installation, a book launch, a 24-metre video performance, several lectures, debates, interviews with the press and take a seat at a national television programme.

Project leader Lead production & planning official opening event Budget control, planning, design, artists, security, production, catering, decoration, VIP guidance, PR strategy February - April (2017) On April 6th and 7th of 2017 MVRDV hosted a twoevening event to show their new office to clients, relations, friends, family and staff. The total amount of guests for this event was in total more than 500, divided over two moments. Because of the influence that the office has on it’s hometown Rotterdam and on a national and international level, the Mayor of Rotterdam made a special exception to open MVRDV’s office during an official opening moment. This brought an extra dimension of allure and exposure with it. In December 2016 Bastiaan lead the production and planning for MVRDV’s internal Christmas event. In his role as project leader he made the annual party for more than 250 guests possible. Due to the great succes Bastiaan was asked to act as project leader for the opening of MVRDV’s new office. This is a moment where the company has to shine in its own house, the MVRDV House. Therefore everything the company stands for has to be represented. With a wide variety of exhibitions, artists and guests the stakes are high. Bastiaan’s daily tasks varied from budget control, planning, external and internal meetings, invitation, concept design, design team overview, production, assigning and managing catering/security/artists, etc. and handdling invitations of 500 guests.

YES! WE WON!

Position: Task: Topics: Period: About:

Project leader Win Public Choice Award DDW 2016 Planning, PR strategy, data analist, vote collector, exhibition designer, research, campaign September - October (2016) Thirty-two nominees competing for an award, but only one can win. How do you stand out from the rest to eventually become the winner, while you don’t have full control over the outcome? In the weeks before and during the Dutch Design Week voting could be done digitally or at the special initiated Award exhibition show. With 8 different groups of disciplines a huge variety of competition visitors had to make a choice which one they liked best. All nominees were free to influence the digital part by gathering as much votes as possible, through the social media platform Facebook. Bastiaan designed a small exhibition, which was part of the nominee assignments, where visitors could see, feel and learn about the bricks through video, samples and photography. By doing research on the other 31 nominees and keeping daily reports about the voting during 8 weeks the MVRDV team was very much aware of the current conditions. Together with a PR strategy and an active campaign a place in the top 3 was almost certain. Because of a final pull on votes in the past 24 hours MVRDV managed to obtain the first place. Winning such an award is of importance to clients and future clients. In this way it shows that our work is also appreciated by the many others. On the other hand, this prize means a lot to us as well seeing that we like to design for future cities and its inhabitants.

using Instagram as an recruitment tool

Position: Task: Topics: Period:

Instagram specialist Bring MVRDV Instagram to next level Planning, PR strategy, data analist, research, recruitment July - May (2016-2018)

About:

As a social media platform Instagram is a tool to express in a higly visual and direct way. For artists and brands this can be a perfect way to show their work and services. In June 2016 Bastiaan proposed the idea to singlehandedly start taking over the MVRDV account and provide followers with more content. In his eyes the account had even more potential than it already showed and to keep up with the competition improvements had to be made. Non the less because MVRDV already focused and worked on being a highly visual company. Therefore, Instagram should not be forgotten. Before starting to post in the account Bastiaan did a 4 weeks research about the history of the account, MVRDV on itself and the competitors worldwide and their Instagram accounts. Due to the research he learned what the strengths and weaknesses were and how to implement improvements and innovations better and more efficient. With this knowledge he was able to form a strategy and set monthly and quarterly goals. Apart from the research and posting it was of great importance to him to monitor data on a daily and weekly bases. Seeing in numbers what the account for MVRDV and its competitors did make him more aware of his own actions and the responses of others. In a period of 18 months he was able to bring the account from 56,000 to 276,000 organic followers. Because of this success MVRDV started to invest their HR matters more into social media regarding recruitment. Special strategies were designed for this.

Press Tour Writing about the Skygarden project? Yes! Writing about Seoul and other hotspots? Yes! The city has bloomed into a cultural capital with highprofile architecture, top museums and an influential arts scene. Inviting international journalists means providing them with opportunities for story writing and investing in getting the most out of potential project and publicity. MVRDV proposes to the Seoul Government to organize so called ‘press tours’ during which journalists are introduced to the city’s identity and program. The journalists presence should be used to show them how fantastic seoul is. In terms of culture, food, hospitality and innovation. In this way the city marketing will receive a lot of extra exposure which will make a big impact in the city’s future developments.

Press Officer Assisting on project opening in South-Korea, writing Press Proposal Planning, PR strategy, proposal writing, relations with international and national press, tours, copywriting March - May (2017) Located in the heart of Seoul, a true plant village has been realised on a former inner city highway in an ever-changing urban area accommodating the biggest variety of Korean plant species and transforming it into a public 983-metre long park gathering 50 families of plants including trees, shrubs and flowers displayed in 645 tree pots, collecting around 228 species and subspecies. With the long expectation of Seoullo 7017 Skygarden to be opened MVRDV wanted to bring extra attention to this special project. To be able to do so MVRDV proposed a Press Package to the client in which they were informed about the high potential PR value of the project and the low investment requirements. In this Press Package MVRDV described the possible actions taking place during the event, like for instance a official cutting ribbon ceremony with artists and children, live music and fireworks. On the other hand, more important in a broader perspective, was the intention to invite international press to be present during this event so they could write instantly about the project, the usage of it by the visitors and the value for the city. During this process Bastiaan had written the Press Proposal and was present during the opening in Korea to make sure the photoshoots for the project were possible to take place, guide international press for several days through the city and provide content for social media.

A mixed program of housing, offices, work spaces, commercial spaces and public spaces are arranged in a 20 meter deep and ten-story-high urban envelope. The apartments differ vastly in size, price and organization, which appeals to a changing demography and the desire for individuality.

The client wanted 100 units for elderly people with a gallery-type circulation. At the first meeting, a half joking solution whereby the houses that would not fit inside the gallery block were glued to the outer side of the volume drew attention. The client saw the potential and so MVRDV made it work.

The program is split into five towers connected with a patio which forms a lifted semi-public area that overlooks and enlarges the surrounding park. The park building is seen to continue the optimistic tradition that characterizes the history of these post war modernist neighbourhoods.

The entirely transparent faรงade uses glass bricks, glass windows frames and glass architraves in a way to evoke the vernacular of the area with the goal to maintain the character of the site without compromising the historical ensemble.

Press Officer Arranging/guiding tours, film crews and photography Planning, proposal writing, relations with international and national press, relations with clients, film crews, photographers, guiding May - April (2016-2018) In the past 25 years MVRDV has been able to realize a lot of projects, nationally and internationally. In The Netherlands alone this number exceeds above the twenty-five. To inform relations, (potential) clients and press about MVRDV’s work and its value it is by far the best way to show these in real-life. In Amsterdam and Rotterdam MVRDV holds over more than 6 projects per city which can be seen from the outside and sometimes even from the inside with a guided tour or due to the good relations with residents. As Press Officer Bastiaan took care of arranging and guiding many of these tours, varying from high-class clients such as Pellegrino (CEO group) and Dolce & Gabbana to CEO’s and other form of clients from countries and cities all over the world. For instance, Middle-East, Indonesia, Japan, Taiwan, Australia, Canada, Germany, China, The Netherlands, and many more. Visiting De Markthal in Rotterdam was almost a weekly event. Requests from press and others were also arranged. For instance, a visit to a project in China by a Dutch television crew would mean that Bastiaan would assist in getting visas and talk with external parties in China to make the filming extra efficient. Filming and photographing MVRDV projects in The Netherlands has been taking place multiple times. Preparation for this takes a different angle due to the longer duration of visits and with film crews also a bigger amount of crew being present.

Press Officer Handling all requests coming through the PR Mailbox Relations with international and national press, relations with clients, (ghost) writing texts November - April (2017-2018) The PR department receives a lot of press requests on a daily base due to the rising star of the company on an international level. Due to the opening of new projects and entering new markets this amount keeps growing as we speak. To deal with the growing demand of requests in the PR Mailbox Bastiaan was asked to assist and use his talent of ‘fixer under high pressure situations’. This meant that he was put in charge of all communications and had to handle every single email coming in. Together with his team he was able to provide the service of ‘response within 24-28 hours’. The amount of ‘unread mails’ was normally around the 250 emails per week, due to Bastiaan’s work attitude and new designed and implemented strategy, this amount never exceeded above the 25 per month.

Forming my personal pallet with the focus to not become an expert on one topic, but rather knowing a lot about many things and become an expert in bringing people and initiatives together to make great things possible. Wanting to stimulate and improve talented artists and let businesses become more successful. Most of the time they know exactly what their talents are, but sometimes they just need some extra assistants in design, management, sales or branding. Because I seem to be aware of many things and know what design means, how precious and sensitive it can be, I’m able to implement a strategy around it which can help bringing it to next levels and make people more aware of talents and innovations.
