Music Together: Family Classes
Ages 1-5 w/parent
You and your child can make beautiful music together! Enjoy an eight-week session with an experienced instructor guiding you and your child(ren) as you sing, dance, move, laugh, play instruments and more! Through music and play, children will practice large and small motor skills, develop emotional, social and classroom skills, and expand their verbal and cognitive skills. Please note: each session introduces a new song collection. Tuition includes a CD and digital download of the music we use in class, an illustrated songbook, and the Music Together newsletter. Ages 3-6
Expand your child’s world! Introduce your child to the Spanish language in this Spanish immersion class developed especially for very young learners. Vamonos Spanish Kids Club
Ages 6-10
Learning a second language can open a world of possibilities for your child. In this class, students will embark on their Spanish language journey, learning conversational Spanish and some Spanish grammar, reading, and writing skills through interactive, engaging, and fun activities. Cupcake Decorating for Older Kids and Teens
Ages 9-14
Learn some beginner decorating skills using buttercream frosting and a variety of piping tips. Each participant will decorate 4 cupcakes to take home. All materials are provided for you. Instructor: Lori Smerz
Spring Rolls & Dipping Sauce (Parent/ Child Class)
Ages 9+ with Parent
Learn the steps to making this popular Asian appetizer and the accompanying sauce. This also is a good class to hone your knife-cutting skills. You will have plenty to take home with you, so bring a take-home container with you. Instructor: Lori Smerz
Horsemanship for Kids
Ages 10-17
Dunham Woods Farm is a superior equestrian facility dedicated to providing the best lesson and horse care instruction available for over 50 years. You will explore the proper ways to groom, tack and handle horses. Lessons will be held in our indoor arena during inclement weather. First day of class is orientation and groundwork. Make-up class held at the end of the six weeks. Riders should wear jeans or Jodhpur pants and hard-soled riding or hiking boots with a small, low heel. Checkmate Chess
Ages 5-12
Develop your child’s intellect through the royal game of chess! Current research has shown a strong link between chess and academic performance in a variety of areas, including mathematics and language arts. Chess has been proven to enhance children’s motivation, concentration, focus, social skills, and creativity. Each class will consist of a fun, interactive teaching period and guided practice time. Magic Class
Ages 5-12
Children are guaranteed to have fun as they learn a collection of fascinating and mesmerizing tricks! Amaze family and friends with tricks that involve cards, ropes, coins, mind-reading and more. While the tricks may appear difficult, kids will discover they are quick to learn and easy to perform. Note: All materials are provided and each child receives a magic kit to take home. Children are grouped by age and always learn tricks that are age appropriate. New tricks are taught each session, so you can sign up again.

As the demands of the school year begin to lessen, spring is a great time to work on calming our worries. Anxiety in children continues to be on the rise and is considered one of America’s TOP health problems. Through funny and elaborate dramatizations, kids will garner 15 strategic tools to use after they depart this workshop to whack their worries on the spot. School’s Out for Summer Slime

School is almost out for summer! We are celebrating with the ultimate sensory experience. Have the slime of your life creating seasonal slime. Our creations will pop like fireworks, smell like summer, and be textured to remind kids of the beach. Every participant will go home with the slime they made. Explore the world of musical theatre through developmentally appropriate, age-based instruction in singing, acting and dancing through songs and scenes from a musical! Building ensemble and technique in character work, voice, stylized movement, and storytelling will culminate with a cabaret-style showcase for friends and family. ACT 1: Acting Fundamentals
Grades K-3
Recommended for new or beginning acting students who want to participate in the next play or musical, Beginning Acting covers the fundamentals of acting through sensory, observation and relaxation exercises and games. Beginning actors will learn and practice good habits of basic stage movement, blocking, and body work in order to learn to move and act with purpose. This class will provide actors with the groundwork to take the stage with confidence and culminates with a fun mini showcase on the last day of class.
ACT 2: Acting in Performance
Grades 4-8
Recommended for students who are currently in or planning to participate in a play or musical production, this class focuses on meeting the needs of each actor, and working to get to the next level of performing for an audience. Through learning and application of techniques, we will work on setting each actor’s goals and finding and fixing performance gaps through individualized coaching on techniques and methods for performance. The second half hour will focus on extension of the craft by digging deeper into character work, objectives, relationships, and putting the words to action to develop a scene or monologue that engages the audience into the world of the character. This class concludes with a monologue showcase on the last day of class.

Come to the Red Oak Nature Center and listen to an exciting nature-themed story! Each meeting will feature a different book, and simple craft, and may include a short hike or a special animal visitor. Each registered child will receive a plush reading buddy to take home at the end of each session. Adults must attend, but do not need to register.
Cave Hike
All Ages, with an Adult
Join us for a guided hike to the only cave in the Chicagoland region! Along the way, our staff will stop to point out areas of interest and signs of the season. Learn what makes our cave so unique before taking home a piece of geologic history for yourself. Children must be accompanied by a registered adult. Dress for the weather, hikes go rain or shine!
Grow with Me
Ages 2-5, with an Adult
Spring brings new life in the forest giving us so much to discover! Each meeting will have us exploring outside to see what new and wonderful changes our environment has to show us, in addition to a simple craft and/or story. Dress for being outside and possibly getting messy.
Earth Hour Illuminated Hike
All Ages, with an Adult
Join the world as we partake in one big, iconic action—turning off the lights! Show love for the earth by powering down lights and electronics and enjoying time outdoors or with others in a way that doesn’t use energy. Our trail will be lighted with solar-powered lanterns for this unique time of exploring the outdoors at night! Campfire and marshmallows included! All children must be accompanied by a registered adult.

Relax around the campfire and hear some legends or go on a short night hike to explore the woods before sitting down to roast your own marshmallows! All children must be accompanied by a registered adult.

Spend part of your morning learning about some of our amazing animal ambassadors at Red Oak Nature Center while decorating your own set of cupcakes! Fee covers four cupcakes and supplies to decorate them.

The April Fool has been out in our woods playing tricks! He left a set of clues behind that may lead to a hidden treasure! Solve his riddles and follow the directions to find the location of his secret loot!
Earth Day Buddies!

Pick up one of our take-home kits to help your littles explore the meaning of Earth Day! Each kit comes with a link to an interactive, digital presentation, their own plush buddy, and seed kit for you to plant and grow your own mini garden of native flowers! Registration ends on April 11 so that supplies can be ordered.
Forest Fairy Kits!

Let your creativity fly as you put together your very own fairy habitat or gnome home! Each take-home kit is unique and comes with everything you need, including a container, decorations, and your own fairy! Then, head out onto one of our trails where forest fairies have been spotted for inspiration!
Fantastic Fens-A Unique Wetland Community
Ages 18+
Fens are a rare type of wetland found in northeastern Illinois. Discover how this unique habitat is formed, its special characteristics and the unique plants that call it home! After a short presentation, we will head outdoors on a one-mile roundtrip hike. Please note, portions of this hike will be on uneven, wood-chipped trails.
