Dear Residents: Parks and green spaces remain central to health and wellness. We invite you this summer to pick a park you’ve never been to in Batavia and tag us on social media, or send your picture to us for a chance to be featured in an upcoming Park District Fun Guide. Our map of 40 parks is located on pages 94 and 95. Give us your best shot!
A Message from Our Executive Director
Opening day at Hall Quarry Beach is May 28, so take advantage of the deeply discounted preseason rates between March 21 and May 27. Passes will be sold at the regular rates beginning on May 28. New this year—for last year’s season pass holders, you can renew your season passes simply by logging into your Park District account. We are proud to be the largest employer of youth in the area. The Park District teaches young men and women how to be professional, develop a work ethic, focus on core values, create a customer service style and strengthen their leadership skills. A park district is the first job that many will experience in their lives, whether they start off as a day camp counselor, lifeguard or paddleboat cashier. Please remember this when you meet one of our seasonal staff members. They are learning and are aspiring to greatness, but it’s a work in progress. They are doing the best they can and learning through their interactions with you. Thank you for making their experience a positive one! This year’s Windmill City Festival will take place July 8–10 at the Batavia Riverwalk. We will feature one stage at the Peg Bond Center during the course of the 2 1/2 days that will feature all of the acts you’ve grown to love throughout the years, such as the Pet Competition and bands like 7th Heaven. The carnival also will make a comeback. An all-time favorite tradition is the Golf Challenge, in which people chip a golf ball onto the green to earn prizes. There’s never a dull moment at the festival! Perhaps you’ve seen the Park District’s “Foxy Lady No. 9” open-air trolley rolling through town and are wondering what the commotion is all about? On page 85, you can sign up for a historic trolley tour of Batavia for just $15, or you may choose the day and time to have your own private trolley tour! Tours last between 45–60 minutes and can fit up to 12 participants. What are you waiting for? Experience Batavia like you never have before! Take time for fun! All the best,
Allison Niemela, CPRP Executive Director

BATAVIA’S BIGGEST EVENT OF THE SUMMER!
FREE!
Once hailed as Batavia Boo Boo Days in 1956, a humble sidewalk sale transformed from a bonanza of bargains to entertainment for kids of all ages. This longstanding tradition was renamed to “Windmill City Festival” in 1978 to reflect Batavia’s rich history and a popular, citywide family celebration! Bring your family and friends, grab some tasty food and beverages, and listen to some of the Midwest’s best music at the Batavia Riverwalk! Back by popular demand is our hometown carnival, our favorite Pet Competition, an adorable Diaper Derby, and the Golf Competition! Saturday, July 9, also is “Unplug Illinois Day,” where residents across the state are encouraged to head outside to unwind and play at their local park districts. Join us and draw what you love about Batavia during our annual Sidewalk Chalk Contest at South Plaza! Visit windmillcityfest.org for more details. New Horizons Preschool The New Horizons program is designed to provide an opportunity for social and emotional growth as well as a beginning adjustment to a more formal school experience. The program is based on the philosophy that children learn more through play. Play provides opportunities for children of all abilities to participate in common activities, yet allows for success and mastery. This is paramount in the foundation of self-esteem and self-confidence. A knowledgeable staff works together to provide a safe and happy environment. Parent involvement in the classroom is encouraged! Program Takeaways: • Language, listening, and speaking activities • Art and sensory activities • Social skills with conflict resolution • Science and math skills • Problem-solving techniques Young 3’s Program: • For a first away-from-parent experience • Emphasis on socialization skills • Pull-ups are allowed in this class only. Hall Quarry Beach
30 | Summer 2022
The Story of Hall Quarry Beach Hall Quarry Beach is an award-winning facility of the Batavia Park District! Hall Quarry Beach occupies a former stone quarry now owned by the Batavia Park District. It has been used as a swimming facility since 1920. The story began over 150 years ago in 1842, when a limestone quarry was opened on the west end of town and Batavia received the name “Rock City.” By 1860, nine quarries were in operation, and one of these quarries sat on an acre of property along the Fox River. More than 150 men mined limestone from the quarry until it was so deep and wide that water began permeating up through the floor of the site. Soon enough, six ponds were formed that fondly were known as “old swimming holes.” By 1920, the Quarry was purchased by Frederick Beach. Beach donated the Quarry to Batavia Township, and they converted the six ponds into one swimming area. This area was named the Frederick H. Beach Park and Pool. Fast forward to 1969, when the Batavia Park District formed and the property was then transferred to the Park District and later renamed. Today Hall Quarry Beach features a sand-bottom swimming area covering 60,000 square feet, which includes islands, slides, and a diving area. There is a playground and plenty of picnic tables, as well. Come visit the beach that Batavia built!

Self-Esteem Through Comedy, A Kids Life Coaching Laughter Lab
Ages 6-13 Why is hope so important to happiness? Having hope is that “bridge” until we get to the other side. Sometimes we must do things (strategies) to get to the other side. Smashing negative thoughts, knowing our strengths, using humor, having emotional self-control, and using a growth mindset are just some of the strategies we will learn. Applying these strategies and envisioning a better outcome can be very motivating for kids in a tough present scenario. To dramatize the concept of hope, we will engineer a Hershey’s chocolate decked-out candy bridge while we learn about the world’s most decadent bridges. Kids may take their edible creation home or eat it on the spot! Instructor: Lisa Lombardi

Recommended for new or beginning acting students who want to participate in the next play or musical, Beginning Acting covers the fundamentals of acting through sensory, observation, and relaxation exercises and games. Beginning actors will learn and practice good habits of basic stage movement, blocking, and bodywork in order to learn to move and act with purpose. This class will provide actors with the groundwork to take the stage with confidence and culminates with a fun mini showcase on the last day of class.
ACT 2: Acting in Performance Grades 4-8 Session 1: June 28-Aug. 9, Tuesdays, 4:20-5:20P Session 2: Aug. 16-Sept. 20, Tuesdays, 4:20-5:20P Recommended for students who are currently in or planning to participate in a play or musical production, this class focuses on meeting the needs of each actor and working to get to the next level of performing for an audience. Through learning and application of techniques, we will work on setting each actor’s goals and finding and fixing performance gaps through individualized coaching on techniques and methods for performance. Red Oak Adventurers Camps (5 weeks)
Nature Nuts (4 weeks)
Ages 8-10 Spend your summer in nature at Red Oak’s Adventure Camp! Each week features a different theme that will get and keep your camper outside exploring the world around them. We’ll hike, play games, make crafts, use tools and have fun. Campers who sign up for all 5 weeks receive a free Red Oak Camp T-shirt. For those signing up for all 5 weeks, a $250 security deposit is due at the time of registration with the balance being charged on June 15. Full-session fee includes a discount on the weekly camp fees. Space is limited.
Ages 5-7 This camp is the perfect way for your youngsters to get that camp experience while they may not be ready for that full day of fun at Red Oak. Each week of camp has its own theme filled with outdoor games, exploration, hiking, crafts, stories and more! All campers are required to bring a healthy and energizing snack and refillable water bottle. Please sign your camper up for one session, either AM or PM.
• Mad Scientist Become mad about science this summer as you uncover the hidden secrets of spies, step into the shoes of an engineer, or blast off rockets like an astronaut. Test theories, devise a plan and see how messy and exciting science can be!
• More Cryptids Exposed There’s a buzz at Red Oak about last summer’s cryptid team discoveries: Bigfoot, fairies, gnomes and Nessie all living here! The word is out and the cryptids are coming to spend some time in our habitats. Your expedition skills will be put to the test!
• Planet Heroes Planet Heroes unite! Join us as we learn about our natural world and the superheroes who live in it. Each day we will learn what it takes to help care for the habitats and their inhabitants through games and activities while turning into superheroes ourselves! Each camper must bring a zero-waste lunch and water bottle to camp every day.
• Amazing Race Crisscross all over Red Oak playing games, solving puzzles, finding clues and competing in challenges that will help them to learn more about the habitats and their inhabitants. It’s not how far they go, but what happens along the way.
• Wacky Water Week Discover what’s lurking in the mud down at Lippold Pond! We will talk about what a wetland is and why they are so important to us and the animals. We also will play games, use dip nets, fishing poles and other tools to help us investigate our pond. Wear clothes and shoes that can become wet and muddy as we will be exploring in the water! Meet at the Lippold parking lot each day and bring a change of shoes and a towel.

• Treasure Hunters Treasure is all around you if you know how to look. This week we will be exploring all types of ways to discover treasure right here in Illinois. All campers are required to bring a healthy, energizing snack and refillable water bottle.
• Animals on Stage Campers will learn about the real-life counterparts to some of our favorite cartoon characters. Everyone from Space Jam 2’s players, Kermit the Frog and more will be the focus of our adventures. All campers are required to bring a healthy, energizing snack and refillable water bottle.
• Wetland Wonders Water is important to all living things! This week we will investigate who visits Lippold Pond and what kinds of creatures call it home. Campers will use tools like dip nets to scoop in the muck, search for tracks along the water’s edge, check the nearby creek and more. Campers must wear old gym shoes (no crocks, flip-flops or rain boots are allowed) and clothes that can become wet and muddy.
• Creature Features There are many different kinds of animals that call Red Oak “home” and each one has special features that help them to survive here. Each day we will focus on these special adaptations through hands-on discoveries before heading out in search of them. What if we even use some of the creature features ourselves to help in the investigation? All campers are required to bring a healthy, energizing snack and refillable water bottle.

Nature Camps Oak Sprouts (3 weeks)
Lil Acorns (4 weeks)
Ages 2-3 w/Parent Our Sprout series is a wonderful way to encourage your tiny camper to explore nature with you! Fun activities will have you and your child outside explore, creating simple crafts and listening to stories all based on that week’s theme. Adults must accompany their child but do not need to register.
Ages 3-4 This camp series is great for your preschooler to help reinforce concepts they may have started learning while challenging them with fun and engaging topics. The day will be packed with plenty of outside time for your campers, including hiking, games, hands-on exploration and more all based on that week’s theme. All campers are required to bring a refillable water bottle. There is no snack break during these camps.
• Crazy for Colors Join the search for some of the craziest, brightest, and rarest colors in nature! We’ll go on short hikes to locate colors, create colorful art, and even listen to a few colorful stories.
• Splish-Splash Our wetland habitats are filled with animals that love to splish and splash about! Dress to get a little wet as we explore how much fun they have in the water.
• Ooey-Gooey Fun Discover together ooey-gooey science while also investigating nature for similar textures. Be sure to come dressed to get messy!
• Mini Mess Makers Let your littles enjoy a grimy-good time as they investigate the natural world around them through sensory play. Each day will have them digging into good, clean fun while sparking curiosity and adventure. Please dress your camper in clothes that can get dirty.
• Bug-ology Join us as we investigate the extraordinary “mini beasts” that live all around us. We will learn about and then explore Red Oak for these bone-less wonders to see what makes each one unique! Campers will take part in games, sensory activities, and outdoor investigation.
• Tales to Trails Join us as we bring some of our favorite stories to life. Each day will be focused around one of our favorite nature-themed stories followed by investigations, crafts, games, and more!
• Dinosaurs Come “RAWR” with us as we investigate dinosaurs and their living relatives! While animals like the chicken, dragonfly and turtle might not seem so ferocious, their ancestors sure went on some colossal adventures. Meat-eating, plant-loving, land and sea dinos will be up for investigating.

Red Oak Legends (5 weeks) Ages 11-13 Become a legend this summer and explore the wilds in five styles of camp to discover what kind of champion you are! Two of these camps have overnight components. Please read the individual descriptions online for more details. For those signing up for all 5 weeks, a $250 security deposit is due at the time of registration with the balance being charged on July 15. Full-session fee includes a discount on the weekly camp fees and one T-shirt.
• Myths vs. Legends Are you ready to take on the legendary creatures of Red Oak? How well do you know the cryptids that call Red Oak home to lure them in to gather evidence and prove their existence or dispel them as a myth? Use all your learned skills of investigation and scientific technique to prove fact, fiction, or possibility!
• Ghostbusters Learn the history and mysteries of our area to determine if the ghost stories are more myth than truth. Campers will research local stories, learn about paranormal researchers and gather their own data to separate the natural from the supernatural. This camp ends with an overnight “ghost hunt” à la “Ghostbusters.”

• Survival Impossible Would you know what to do if you were dropped off on a deserted island with limited supplies? What about first aid assistance if a fellow survivor required it? Challenge yourself this week with scenarios that will test your survival skills from compass reading, first aid skills, food, water prep and more.
• Anything Goes Well, almost anything! As we gear up for the end of summer and the start of the school year, campers will get a chance to be a kid again during this week’s fun. Activities may include campfire cooking, an inflatable obstacle course, capture the flag, messy crafts, water fun and more!
• Outdoor Explorers Head out in our mean green traveling machine and explore some amazing areas in and around Illinois! Each day will be filled with adventures to a new destination so we can explore and have fun. The week ends with a camp out at a state park, where participants pitch tents, cook dinner, hike and more! Previous year’s activities have included creek walking, beach days, cave exploration, dune hiking, museum visits and more! A more-detailed schedule of activities will be sent with camp forms. Our schedule is subject to change as most are weather dependent, but camp will meet regardless. Fee includes transportation, admission fees, camp out materials and more.

NATU RE Out of this World Ages 8-11 With Red Oak as our home base, campers will explore the habitats during that magical hour when the sun sets and the moon rises! Who comes out to visit, what sounds will be heard? We will explore through hiking, telling campfire stories, looking at the constellations and maybe roasting a marshmallow or two. All registrants will receive one Red Oak flashlight to keep.
Cave Hike All Ages Join us on a 1-mile round trip hike to the only cave in the Chicago metropolitan area! Along the way, we will stop to point out areas of interest and signs of the season. Learn what makes our cave so unique and take a piece of geologic history home with you. Dress for the weather - these hikes go rain or shine!
Rusty Rodeo Wild Artists Ages 8-11 Spend a week in the late summer afternoon at Red Oak letting nature inspire your creations! Campers will use different forms of media with our visiting guest artists, which may include clay, dyes, paint, mud, fabric and other natural materials. Some art will be taken home while others will be left to decorate our “Art Nook” hidden in the woods. Campers should be dressed in clothes that can get “redesigned.” Those signed up for Wild Artists week automatically will be enrolled in our Summer’s End Party at no additional fee.
66 | Summer 2022
All Ages w/an Adult Participate in our 4th annual “Rusty Rodeo” event at Glenwood Park Forest Preserve. he Batavia Depot Museum, a cooperative effort between the Batavia Park District and the Batavia Historical Society, houses the rich history of the city’s past. The museum is in a restored Chicago, Burlington and Quincy railroad station, which was built in 1854 and recognized in 1979 for its uniqueness by the National Register of Historic Places. There are two floors of exhibits on local and state history to explore, as well as a 1907 caboose! The Gustafson Research Center, in the lower level of the Depot Museum, houses our archives. Researchers have access to Kane County Census records, Tri-City directories, cemetery records, obituary indexes, local church records, probate and court records, historical books, photograph files, local business catalogs and more. For additional information on the history of Batavia and the Historical Society’s collections, visit the Batavia Historical Society web page at www.bataviahistoricalsociety.org.
Expanded Hours | June, July, August The sunlight lasts a little longer at this time of year, and so do the Museum’s hours. Beginning June 4, visitors will have nearly double the time to explore the Museum thanks to the addition of extra summer hours on weekends.

City of Energy – The Forces that Built Batavia
Refraction: Finding Identity Have you ever struggled to decide if the child in the beautiful dress in your old family photographs actually is greatgrandpa or his sister? Do you know which First Lady cemented the idea of pink for girls and blue for boys? Learn more about the changing norms of identity and celebrate the stories of Batavians who have created their own path throughout our history.
Inspiring Expression Batavians of all skill levels from the prehistoric period to the present day have used visual art to express themselves and their view of the world. “Inspiring Expression” celebrates our community’s creativity and showcases the Museum’s deep collection of rarely seen visual artworks created and treasured by Batavia residents.
August – December 2022
From windmills to steam engines, dams to particle accelerators, Batavia’s history is filled with movement and the devices that people made to help make work easier for each generation. This new exhibit explores the natural forces that have built Batavia, from the work of our community’s early engineers and inventors, up through the contributions made by their modern-day counterparts. Take a look at how they utilized wind, water and steam power—all of the forces that were harnessed to build Batavia.
History Garden May – September
We’re taking the Museum outdoors! This summer check out how our garden grows and learn to read the stories told by our landscape.

If you or someone you know will require an accommodation for District service, or have any questions about the District’s compliance please contact the A.D.A. Compliance and Inclusion Officer for the Batavia Park District, 327 W Wilson Street, Batavia, 630-406-5282.
Cancellation decisions will be made one week in advance of the beginning of the program in most cases. All participants in canceled classes will be notified by Park District staff and will receive a full refund.
Class Transfers If you wish to transfer to a different class, please bring $5 per transfer to the Park District and complete a Transfer Form during business hours.
Waiting List Many of our classes have registration limits due to facility space and staff limitations, therefore we cannot always guarantee you will be enrolled in the class of your choice. The Park District maintains waiting lists for classes that have reached their maximum registration and encourages everyone to be placed on a waiting list. We will open additional classes whenever possible.
Scholarship Program The Batavia Park District Board of Commissioners and staff believe in providing program scholarship opportunities to residents with financial limitations. Park District residents are invited to complete the Scholarship Application, attach the required documents, and return to the Civic Center office at 327 Wilson St. For a list of qualifying programs, please visit bataviaparks.org.

WAIVER & RELEASE
batavia park district waiver and release of all claims Important Information The Batavia Park District (the “Park District”) is committed to conducting its recreation programs and activities in a safe manner and holds the safety of participants in high regard. The Park District continually strives to reduce such risks and insists that all participants follow safety rules and instructions that are designed to protect the participant’s safety. However, participants and parents/guardians of minors registering for the program/activity must recognize that there is an inherent risk of injury when choosing to participate in any activities. You are solely responsible for determining if you or your minor child/ward are physically fit and/or adequately skilled for recreational activities. It is always advisable, especially if the participant is pregnant, disabled in any way or recently suffered an illness, injury or impairment, to consult a physician before undertaking any physical activity.
Warning of Risk Recreational activities are intended to challenge and engage the physical, mental and emotional resources of each participant. Despite careful and proper preparation, instruction, medical advice, conditioning and equipment, there is still a risk of serious injury when participating in any recreational activity. Depending on the particular activity, certain risks and dangers may exist due to inclement weather, slips and falls, poor skill level or conditioning, carelessness, horseplay, unsportsmanlike conduct, lack of safety equipment, inadequate or defective equipment, failure in supervision and instruction or officiating, and premises defects. It is impossible for the Park District to guarantee absolute safety.
Waiver and Release of All Claims and Assumption of Risk Please read this form carefully and be aware that in signing up and participating in the Program(s), you will be expressly assuming the risk and legal liability and waiving and releasing all claims for injuries, damages or loss which you or your minor child/ward might sustain as a result of participating in any and all activities connected with and associated with the program(s)/ activity(ies) (including transportation services, when provided).
