Join us in the autumn session of our seasonal series as we learn what our plants and animals are doing to prepare for shorter days and colder weather. Each meeting will have participants engaged in an indoor and an outdoor activity, as well as a short story and craft. Adults must attend, but do not need to register.
Great Pumpkin Hunt
All Ages
The Great Pumpkin is hidden in our woods! Grab your list of clues and go on a selfguided investigation through our forest to find it! Photograph yourself with the “Great Pumpkin” and receive a small prize! Registration is required to receive the prize. Adults do not need to register.
Full Moon Hike
Ages 5+ w/Adult
The October full moon is called the Hunter’s Moon as it is brighter and shines longer, allowing hunters of the past to stalk prey late into the night. We will look for nocturnal critters that call our forest home, and finish with some roasted marshmallows around the fire. Children must be accompanied by a registered adult. Adults must register.
NEW!
Natural Chatter - Book Swap
Ages 18+
Share some of your favorite nature-based books (field guides, fiction, non-fiction) and discuss with others what you like about them. We also will provide the option to swap books, so feel free to bring any nature books or periodicals that you do not need anymore, and possibly find a new treasure yourself! Light refreshments will be served.

International Rock-Flipping Day
Ages 3+ w/Adult
Venture outside and explore the microhabitats found underneath rocks! On this International Rock-Flipping Day, participants will be guided outdoors along our trails to find and flip rocks! Feel like a kid again getting dirty and making discoveries. Each participant will receive their own rock to paint and create a micro-habitat at home! All participants must be registered, and children must be accompanied by an adult. Adults must register. For more information, visit www.rockflipping.org.
Talkin’ Turkey Take-Home Kit!
Ages 3+
In honor of the noble turkey, participants will learn how special turkeys are, and how they almost became our nation’s mascot. Participants may watch a digital presentation at home to learn about this funny foul and follow up by creating their own tender-hearted turkey plush to stuff, love and take care of at home! Must be ordered by November 10 for kits to arrive on time.
Working for Wildlife
Ages 8+
Learn about different wildlife and what it takes to help them thrive under human managed care. Each meeting will have participants focusing on a different species, with special guest appearances from our own animal ambassadors! Through hands-on inquiry and live animal interactions, we will learn what we can do to help the wild versions of these amazing animals.
Animal Feeding Time!
Ages 8+
Engage with some of our animal ambassadors as an assistant animal caretaker! Participants will learn fun facts about the species we care for and personal background information about what makes each one unique. Fee is for a group of up to four people and must include at least one adult.
Holiday Party with the Animals
All Ages w/Adult
Come show the animal ambassadors at Red Oak Nature Center the holiday spirit by decorating, interacting, and having fun right next to them! Self-guided craft stations will be available for you to create decorations for our Wildlife Room, including a few special, enrichment-style treats to be gifted to these incredible animals for all their hard work. Adults do not need to register, but must accompany their participant.
