This legendary fruit has been an important source of nutrition, a symbol of hospitality and an emblem of a proud and traditional culture. Bedouins have relied on dates for sustenance, poets have praised its virtues and generations have been nurtured by its blessing. The Bateel groves in Al-Ghat, Saudi Arabia, produce more than 20 varieties of premium quality dates, including the famed Nabout Seif, Sokari, Kholas and Khidri. Most of these date varieties are available in fresh, rhutab and the traditional Maknooz recipe. Bateel’s extensive date selection is matched only by the care with which each individual fruit is processed from the date palm to the boutique.

Known to Muslims as a holy date, the Ajwa has soft dark brown to black skin, with mildly sweet flesh and a raisin-like texture.

Round and golden brown, Barhi dates have a smooth surface and very sweet, caramel-flavoured flesh.

The Dakhlanoor or Deglet Nour date has a soft texture, a translucent blonde colour and a soft caramel-like taste. Its Arabic name translates as “Date of Light�.

Dark skinned and elongated, Dekkini dates are very sweet, sticky and chewy.

Dhawi dates are milder than other date varieties, are long and cylindrical in shape and have firm, deep red skin.

Thick and round Fankha dates have soft reddish brown skin and very sweet, starchy flesh.

Small and prune-like, the Gattara date is similar to the Ajwa, not only in appearance but in taste. It is however slightly bigger and less sweet.

The most renowned Bateel date, the Khidri has dark maroon skin and sweet, chewy flesh.

Often taken with Arabic coffee, Kholas dates are golden brown with loose and smooth skin over delicate, toffee-flavoured flesh.

The Lahamiya has an intense brown colour, with very sweet and soft flesh.

The Mactoumi has dark reddish brown skin and moderately sweet, soft and chewy flesh.

Also called Californian dates, Madjool dates are large and moderately sweet, with thin brown skin and chewy, succulent, amber-coloured flesh.

Monief dates are long and oval, have yellowish brown skin and are soft and fleshy.

The Muttawa date ranges from dark to light brown colour andis moderately sweet.

Oval shaped and sweet, the Nabout Ali is firm and yellow at the top and soft and brown at the base.

The Nabout Salma is a dark and round date with wrinkled skin and chewy flesh.

A dark brown date, the Nabout Seif has loose wrinkled skin and moderately sweet, chewy flesh.

The Nabout Sultan is cone-shaped with dark maroon skin and chewy, caramelflavoured flesh.

Oval-shaped and yellow brown in colour, Roshadia dates have mildly sweet and soft flesh.

Round and light brown, Rothan dates are mild in sweetness and have soft dry flesh.

The Safawy is a dark and oval-shaped date with its creased skin and sweet, chewy flesh giving it a prune like texture.

Segai dates are interesting in both appearance and flavour - yellow, firm and very sweet at the top, and dark, soft and mildly sweet at the base.

The light brown and cylindrical Sifri has smooth and firm skin over moderately sweet flesh.

The Silaj is dark maroon and elongated, with smooth and slightly creased skin over mildly sweet flesh.

Long and oblong in shape, the Siri date has thin, smooth and reddish-brown skin with firm and very sweet flesh.

Popular in the Middle East, Sokari dates are hard and cone-shaped with creased, yellow skin and mildly sweet flesh. Named after the Arabic word for “sweet�, Sokari dates are also known as royal dates.

The long and oval-shaped Um Al Hamam has creased, reddish brown skin over soft and very sweet flesh.

The Wanan is long and cone-shaped, with dark, wrinkled skin and soft, mildly sweet flesh.
