Engineering and Science at Bates
Bates partners with five prestigious institutions offering a dual engineering degree to our students. The program, often referred to as 3-2 because of the divided time between schools over the five-year span, allows interested students to earn a combination of B.S., B.A., and B.E. degrees.

“You may (and probably should) ask for advice and guidance from others, but you should always be the final arbiter of your own destiny.”

Q: A: What was it like coming to Bates (and Maine) as an international student?
While I was pretty excited before I came to Bates, I still had some nervousness as we neared Orientation. I was about to take a journey in which I was going to join a new community that definitely had many different perspectives from mine in a number of dimensions.
I realized that just being myself was the best way to navigate a foreign land. I was eager to share my experiences and perspectives. These differences made me and everyone around me more interesting. I came to understand how easy it was to make friends and create different circles — I even joined the track and field team, which I have loved!
Being at Bates has made me realize that I love being part of a community instead of just being another student. I have come to embrace a very valuable lesson that I will carry with me for the rest of my life: come as you are.

What are your favorite parts of life on campus?
The surrounding nature is a true highlight of Bates. I love hiking Mount David with my friends or by myself, for stargazing or just clearing my head. Some of my earliest and fondest memories from Bates are around Lake Andrews, as I’d walk by it from my dorm to the dining hall every morning. Being greeted by our campus ducks and sometimes professors’ dogs is a great way to start the day!

How has Bates prepared you for life after college?
Though I knew Bates would be a great place to live and learn in, I didn’t really grasp its true potential until getting here. On top of the job shadowing, internship, and research opportunities that were offered directly to me through the Center for Purposeful Work and my amazing academic experiences being a psychology major and a dance minor, Bates has also prepared me in growing as an individual. After spending three years at Bates, I know I have become a more critical thinker, a more curious scholar, a more caring friend, a more expressive dancer, and overall — and most importantly — a better version of myself.
