the installation of a range of innovative energy systems, including: • lighting, heating and cooling systems that result in a 10 per cent reduction in energy use compared with a conventional hospital; • 2 .4MW tri-generation plant that will use gas (not coal) to produce power equivalent to the electricity use of 447 households. Heat produced in the generation of electricity by the plant will be captured and used for heating, domestic hot water and cooling ; • patient areas cooled by 'active chilled beams', which use cold water and fresh air to provide gentle cooling , improved air quality and improved efficiency; • roof-top solar panels that will provide around 40 per cent of hot water for ward areas, and • 800kW biomass boiler using renewable energy to help heat the hospitaL

The new RCH will be Australia 's greenest hospital and boasts a number of environmental initiatives. A 20 per cent reduction in water use will be achieved though a blackwater treatment system, rainwater collection , water-efficient fittings and water-conscious landscaping . There will be green transport options for travelling to the hospital, including a tram super-stop and 500 secure bike parking spots.

PROJECT REVIEW I THE NEW ROYAL CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL, VIC with running a large scale project has been invaluable to Lend Lease and other project stakeholders. " At its peak, the project workforce was in excess of 2, 100 people, which posed some coordination challenges. The sheer scale of the excavation (450,000m3) presented logistical challenges, particularly in relation to materials handling and the movement of vehicles around the site. To overcome these challenges, the project team developed a base design of a scaffold fall protection screen to assist the elimination of falling from scaffolds . The team also developed a base model for portable truck deck protection rails to protect workers from the risk of falling during truck unloading .
