Says Andrealle, “I’ve always known I wanted to work with computer software, so when the Boys and Girls Club showed me some web design, and how things worked in the background, I said, ‘I want to do that!’” She enrolled in Bates’ Software Development program in 2012 on the advice of a University of Washington Tacoma career advisor, who said the college’s IT programs were the best pathway for her to start her IT education. Andrealle earned her associate of technology degree summer quarter, and will be a student in the computer science program at the University of Washington Tacoma in September. “The Software Development program allowed me to learn about the entire information technology field, and helped open the door to employment in different programming positions,” she says. “Students spend time in the Web Development program and the Database Technology program, so we can learn about those facets of the industry. With this degree, you can work anywhere that needs a programmer, like Facebook, Microsoft, government entities, and Boeing,” says Andrealle. State Support for Education Washington state contributes to the cost of resident students’ education. The average total cost of resident full-time tuition for a full year of education is $6,168. Resident students pay an average of $2,849 of this amount; the remaining $3,319 is paid for by the state of Washington.

Tuition Refund Policy A student who has paid tuition before the quarter starts but is unable to attend the class may receive a full tuition refund. After the first day of class, Bates grants refunds as follows: • From the 1st to the 5th calendar day - 80% • From the 6th day to the 15th calendar day - 40% • After the 15th calendar day, there is no refund The tuition refund policy applies to all students in state-supported programs. It is the student’s responsibility to complete a withdrawal form and submit it to the registration office. The date the withdrawal is received will be used for calculating refunds. Self-Support Courses • The college cancels the class - 100% • Withdrawal on or before one business day prior to 1st class - 100% • Student registers but doesn’t attend - None
