Apprenticeship

Pierce County TV moves to Bates Pierce County TV, the awardwinning channel that provides transparency for nine local governments, has moved its operations to Bates Technical College under a new partnership that expands training opportunities for students. PCTV is now operating out of offices and shared studio space on the college’s Central/Mohler Campus, located on South 19th Street in Tacoma. Under the agreement, PCTV staff will work with college faculty to provide training for students with professional-grade video gear in the field and in the studio. “This partnership with Pierce County TV makes a significant investment to our Broadcasting/Audio/Visual Production program, which prepares students for careers in the video, audio, film, television and multimedia industries,” said President Dr. Ron Langrell. PCTV operates television channels that air meetings and EMMY-nominated news programming for Pierce County and other local governments, agencies and schools. PCTV is available on channel 22 on the Comcast and Click! Systems, and channel 20 on Rainier Connect and in HD on Click! Channel 522. Programming is available on demand at www.piercecountytv.org.

Richard enlisted in the Army while in high school. He worked as a wheeled vehicle mechanic, and later, as a shop foreman. He became a father during his first year in the service, did two tours in Iraq, and met his future wife, a fellow service member, during his first tour. After nine years in the military, stationed at Joint Base Lewis-McChord since 2005, Richard medically retired and took the opportunity to follow in his grandfather’s footsteps. After researching colleges, Richard chose Bates’ welding program because it was the only program in the state that offered an AWS certification, not just the WABO certification. “The AWS certification is something you can take anywhere you go, whereas the WABO certification is only valid within the state of Washington,” explains Richard. Now in his fourth quarter, Richard’s goal is to obtain a dualshield flux-cored arc welding and stick welding certification, and then the six G unlimited pipe certification, so he can work on the pipeline in Alaska while his wife studies to be a physician’s assistant. “Ultimately,” says Richard, “I’d like to own my own fabrication shop, building frames and custommade cars, just like my grandfather. The hands-on training and experience I’m receiving at Bates is instrumental in helping me reach this goal,” he says.

Tuition Refund Policy A student who has paid tuition before the quarter starts but is unable to attend the class may receive a full tuition refund. After the first day of class, Bates grants refunds as follows: • From the 1st to the 5th calendar day - 80% • From the 6th day to the 15th calendar day - 40% • After the 15th calendar day, there is no refund The tuition refund policy applies to all students in state-supported programs. It is the student’s responsibility to complete a withdrawal form and submit it to the registration office. The date the withdrawal is received will be used for calculating refunds. Self-Support Courses • The college cancels the class - 100% • Withdrawal on or before one business day prior to 1st class - 100% • Student registers but doesn’t attend - None

Limitation of Liability The college’s total liability for claims arising from a contractual relationship with the student in any way related to classes or programs shall be limited to the tuition and expenses paid by the student to the college for those classes or programs. In no event shall the college be liable for any special, indirect, incidental, or consequential damages, including but not limited to, loss of earnings or profits. 17 years of making nights merry and bright

For the 17th year, Bates Technical College students bring light and sparkle to the largest drive-through holiday light display in the Northwest. Fantasy Lights features more than 300 elaborate holiday-inspired scenes that bring holiday cheer and sparkle to the shores of Spanaway Lake. This year, a jolly giant crab and a twinkling octopus join an orca, seaweed, fish, clams, jellyfish and other life under the sea. These friendly six-feet-high marine creatures and a 14-foot resplendent rocket ship docked near the glowing alien invasion are Bates Technical College’s contribution to the popular holiday drive-through gift of lights. “We are proud of our long partnership with Pierce County Parks and Recreation,” said President Dr. Ron Langrell. “Our annual participation is a shining example of our community involvement with neighborhood partners. Fantasy Lights is a fun and rewarding tradition for our students and employees, and we look forward to being a part of it each holiday season,” he said.
