Adult Basic Education (ABE) and General Education Development (GED) preparation classes help those who may or may not have a high school diploma improve mathematics, reading and writing skills. ABE provides you with a foundation so you can beneﬁt from technical education and gain job-speciﬁc skills. In many cases, you can start career education programs while also taking ABE classes. HS21+ classes: If you’ve earned high school credits, have work, military or life experience, but have not yet earned your high school diploma or equivalency, then this competency-based diploma program may be the perfect fit for you. If you’re at least 21 years old, you can earn a high school diploma. An advisor will examine transcripts and knowledge gained from life experience, and work with you to craft an educational plan to fill gaps. Nursing is a fast-paced, exciting career, with a bright economic future. Our Licensed Practical Nursing (LPN) program is approved by the Washington Nursing Care Quality Assurance Commission. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the 2016 median pay for LPNs is $21.20 per hour, and the job outlook is projected to grow. New student cohorts are admitted in the fall and spring for the foundation courses that cover the first year of your nursing degree. Upon successful completion of the courses with a minimum 3.0 or higher GPA, you will be automatically admitted to the next nursing cohort entry point. RECIPE FOR SUCCESS: CULINARY SKILLS AND ENTREPRENEURIAL LEARNING YIELDS PERFECT BLEND FOR BRIGHT FUTURE

Raymond Mendoza, Student

hen Culinary Arts student Raymond Mendoza was serving in the U. S. Coast Guard, his love for exploring and learning about different cuisines grew. “At each port of call,” recalls Ray, “I found myself flocking to local restaurants to taste the native cooking.” Now retired, Ray decided to use his Post-9/11 GI Bill benefits to explore his culinary interests “I was looking for an opportunity to provide an outlet for creative expression while also being a service to my family and the community,” says 45-year-old Ray. “After 15 years of maritime law enforcement, I was ready to try something different.” Ray researched programs, and Bates Technical College’s Culinary Arts rose to the top of the list. “The American Culinary Federation accreditation that Bates holds,

plus the positive reputation in the community and proximity to my residence were strong considerations,” says Ray. “I quickly scheduled a tour and an appointment with the chef instructors, and then enrolled in the program,” he says.

The six-quarter Associate in Applied Science degree program prepares students for careers in the culinary arts profession, and for advanced education at other culinary institutions. For summer quarter, Ray decided to experience the food truck program to help round out his culinary education. “The summer is always busy in the food truck program, and I wanted to get out of the kitchen and into the field,” he smiles. The hands-on focus in the college’s cafe’, fine dining room, catering services and food truck helps ensure graduates are prepared for a variety of entry-level careers.

“My experience has been great,” boasts Ray. “I think my military training has helped me adapt to the ‘chain of command’ structure that the professional kitchen highlights. All of my instructors, including substitutes, have provided me with excellent hands-on education.” With the ultimate goal of pursuing a Bachelor of Science in a nutrition or dietetics field, he hopes his background in culinary arts will help him use his kitchen skills to deliver healthier eating options. “Attending the program at Bates has been fun, informative and enjoyable. I look forward to the start of each day,” he says. “I enjoy both the classroom lectures and hands-on application in the kitchen. Learning the academic material and then applying the concepts is, without a doubt, priceless—it’s how I learn the best,” says Ray. Earning an Associate in Applied Science represents a big accomplishment for Ray. “A degree from Bates means that I have the foundation I need to create a second successful career that will carry me on to my golden years,” adds Ray. 

CIVIL ENGINEERING INSTRUCTOR TAINA PADILLA ANDERSON ENJOYS PASSING HER REAL-WORLD EXPERIENCE ON TO STUDENTS

aina Padilla Anderson has been teaching students in the Civil Engineering program since January. She holds a Master’s Degree from University of Washington Tacoma in geospatial technologies, and a Bachelor’s Degree from University of Texas El Paso in civil engineering. Taina, who is bilingual and multicultural, has performed data analysis for several public and community organizations, worked for a wastewater engineering firm and a land development firm. The program, located in the Advanced Technology Building at Central/Mohler Campus, prepares students for careers as engineering technicians. We recently sat down with Taina to talk about her teaching style, what drew her to the profession, and more.

Q: Why did you choose to enter the civil engineering field? From the age of five or six, I assisted my grandfather with the repair and maintenance of cars and buildings. He is an engineer by trade, with an immense ability to design objects that facilitate mechanical functions, but lacked the opportunity to attend school to formalize his knowledge. I have always had strong math abilities and an interest in urban design, so I decided to study civil engineering to get the best of both worlds. Q: What is unique about your teaching style? I strive to make every lesson a hands-on, student-centered experience, and act mostly as a facilitator leading students to resources to find solutions. It is of utmost importance the students leave school with significant experience in being resourceful and self-sufficient.

Giving my students the skills required to succeed not only in this course, but as a professional is highly rewarding for me. Q: What do you like to do outside of work? I enjoy taking long walks with my husband and experiencing all this beautiful area has to offer. After the first day of class, Bates grants refunds as follows: • From the 1st to the 5th calendar day - 80% • From the 6th day to the 15th calendar day - 40% • After the 15th calendar day, there is no refund The tuition refund policy applies to all students in state-supported programs. It is the student’s responsibility to complete a withdrawal form and submit it to the registration office. The date the withdrawal is received will be used for calculating refunds. Self-Support Courses • The college cancels the class - 100% • Withdrawal on or before one business day prior to 1st class - 100% • Student registers but doesn’t attend - None Limitation of Liability The college’s total liability for claims arising from a contractual relationship with the student in any way related to classes or programs shall be limited to the tuition and expenses paid by the student to the college for those classes or programs. In no event shall the college be liable for any special, indirect, incidental, or consequential damages, including but not limited to, loss of earnings or profits. The Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP) recently awarded accreditation to four programs at Bates Technical College. The programs include Accounting, Administrative Medical Assistant, Administrative Office Assistant, and Marketing and Business Management. ACBSP is the only organization that offers specialized business accreditation for all degree levels, from associate to baccalaureate to doctoral degree programs.
