Caring for Kids Sarah Haren ‘05, Early Childhood Education/Child Care

“Going to school at Bates changed my life and set me on the path to success,” says Sarah Haren ‘05, now a lead teacher at the college’s child care center. After the birth of her daughter in 2001, she decided to test for her General Education Development (GED) at Bates. While sitting for the battery of tests, she had the opportunity to explore the campus and the college’s vast program offerings. “Ever since I can remember, I’ve loved being around younger children. I’ve worked as an assistant or a break person in child care settings since I was 15 years old,” says Sarah, now a mother of two daughters. So, it was natural that she pursued a career that connected her with her passion of working with kids. Soon after earning her GED in 2002, she enrolled in the Early Childhood Education/Child Care program. “I am so grateful that both of my children were able to attend the child care center and be close to me while I attended school,” she says. Graduating with an associate of technology degree in 2005, with honors, she worked an hourly position in the college’s child care center. “I patiently waited for a full-time position to open as an early childhood education specialist,” she says. “Finally, in 2007, a position opened, I was hired, and my career began.” Sarah notes that some of her fondest memories of her studies were when she worked in the child care center as part of her lab. “It was a great experience. [Instructor] Laurie O’Neill demonstrated a passion for teaching,” she says. “Bates is my career. It is part of a diverse community and I love the opportunity to meet and talk with new people every day,” says Sarah.

Tuition Refund Policy A student who has paid tuition before the quarter starts but is unable to attend the class may receive a full tuition refund. After the first day of class, Bates grants refunds as follows: • From the 1st to the 5th calendar day - 80% • From the 6th day to the 15th calendar day - 40% • After the 15th calendar day, there is no refund The tuition refund policy applies to all students in state-supported programs. It is the student’s responsibility to complete a withdrawal form and submit it to the registration office. The date the withdrawal is received will be used for calculating refunds. Self-Support Courses • The college cancels the class - 100% • Withdrawal on or before one business day prior to 1st class - 100% • Student registers but doesn’t attend - None Limitation of Liability The college’s total liability for claims arising from a contractual relationship with the student in any way related to classes or programs shall be limited to the tuition and expenses paid by the student to the college for those classes or programs.
