From combat to college Student veteran Jeffrey Carbullido said enlisting in the U.S. Marines was the best decision he’s ever made. Even though he wanted to attend college following graduation from Rogers High School in 2006, he didn’t know what he wanted to study, didn’t have any funds, and lacked transportation. “I walked into the Marines recruiting office and I was hooked,” he said. “I did four years with the Marines and was deployed twice to Iraq and Afghanistan. I was released from active-duty in January 2011,” said Jeffrey, who was a machine gun operator while overseas. In November 2011, he enrolled in Bates’ Fire Service program. “I chose Bates because I heard that this program was a good way to become a firefighter,” he said, adding that the fire chief instructors are great at helping students work toward their goals. After a full day of fire service training, which begins at 6:30 a.m., Jeffrey heads to work. He gets home at around 1 a.m., fits in any studying, and wakes up at 5 a.m. to start the day all over again. “It’s tough and tiring, but the way I see it, it’s what keeps me going. This is what I want, and I will do whatever it takes to become a firefighter and get hired on at a department,” he said. The 25-year-old credits his life experiences with helping him to reach his ultimate goal of becoming a firefighter. “If you want something, fight for it. Be patient and keep fighting for it,” said Jeffrey.
What makes Bates military friendly? From the moment a veteran or a service member steps onto a college campus, they face a unique set of challenges and barriers that set them apart from other students. They may have family responsibilities, a different perspective on life than a traditional college student because of military-related experiences, or they might be out of practice with their academic skills. Some also struggle with PTSD or other injuries. So, how can Bates help make the transition into higher education easier for America’s heroes? Bates began serving U.S. military members in 1940, when the original trade school helped with our country’s war efforts. Now, with about 690 veterans or military students taking courses at Bates, we remain committed to providing every opportunity to help make the transition from military life to civilian life easier. Program Specialist, Karin Frans, works in the Financial Aid Office at the Downtown Campus, Room M208, and is dedicated to serving special-funded students like those using G.I Bill funds. A self-proclaimed Air Force brat, Frans feels a kinship with veterans. “I want to help them as much as I can, and I want to help them succeed,” says Frans. “I encourage students to proceed with enrollment one step at a time, and ask for help if you need it. I’m here to help you with the enrollment process.” You have served our country. Learn how we can serve you at: www.bates.ctc.edu/Veterans.

Bates named a Military-Friendly College Bates Technical College is among the top 15 percent of colleges across the nation to be named a ‘Military Friendly School’ according to Victory Media, a group dedicated to helping veterans transition into civilian life. “It is an honor to be included in [this list], especially given our proximity to Joint Base Lewis McChord,” said President Dr. Ron Langrell. “Our veteran students face unique challenges and Bates stands ready to ensure our military families have the resources they need to achieve their educational and personal goals.” The list recognizes more than 1,700 colleges for actively supporting the educational endeavors of current service members, veterans and their family members.
