Getting started at Bates is easy... Follow these steps to register for classes. From choosing a career education program to getting financial aid, we’re here to help. Read on to learn what you need to do to get started on reinventing your life!

Learn how to get started at Bates Technical College! See the schedule on page 5. The information session begins promptly, so please arrive on time to avoid missing important information. You can also set up a followup appointment with a career advisor for educational planning.

STEP 2 Apply for Financial Aid

Financial aid is available for qualified students. Apply early to receive full funding. Apply online at www.fafsa.ed.gov and sign the free application using your Personal Identification Number (PIN). If you don’t have a PIN, apply online at www.pin.ed.gov and receive your PIN within 2-3 days. After you submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), you will receive a Student Aid Report (SAR) within 4-5 days. FAFSA worksheets are available at both the Downtown and South Campus financial aid offices. If you have any questions about your FAFSA, visit www.studentaid.gov or call 1.800.4.FED.AID.

STEP 3 Complete Entrance Testing

The COMPASS test provides placement information for general education courses, which some career education programs may require. Get a testing schedule for both Downtown and South Campus at the Downtown Assessment Center, M216, or call 253.680.7030. The fee for this test is $19. To request accommodations, contact the Disability Support Services (DSS) office at 253.680.7013, (TTY) 253.680.7045.

STEP 4 Schedule an appointment with a Career Advisor

A career advisor can help you learn about certificate and degree requirements, support services, college policies and procedures and work with you to develop your educational plan. Your career advisor will also talk with you about general education or basic studies requirements. During this appointment, students will complete an application form and pay the non-refundable $62.70 application fee. To speak with a career advisor, call 253.680.7002.

STEP 5 Complete the registration and enrollment form

You will complete the registration and enrollment form with your career advisor. Remember, tuition and fees are due at this time. You may pay in the registration office, M210, at the Downtown Campus or in A115 at South Campus.

STEP 6 Attend a New Student Orientation

The New Student Orientation provides helpful information that will prepare you for your career education program. The orientation is usually the week before the start of a new quarter. If you cannot attend the orientation, visit www.bates.ctc.edu/MyBates and click on New Student Orientation for the online orientation. Paying for College Financial Aid

Apply Early

Even if you’re receiving financial assistance from agency sources (L&I, VA, DVR, WorkSource, WorkFirst), you may be eligible for additional grant aid from state and federal financial aid sources. We determine eligibility by comparing the difference between the cost of attending school and what you and your family can afford to pay.

Financial aid is intended to supplement, not replace, a person’s resources. If your combined resources aren’t sufficient to cover expenses, you may be eligible for financial aid in the form of grants, scholarships, low-interest loans, or work study employment.

Financial aid is available for eligible students. Students and their families do not necessarily need to be considered low-income to qualify for some kinds of financial aid, but students must demonstrate financial need to be eligible for federal assistance.

Students are encouraged to apply for financial aid as early as possible since pre-qualification may take up to eight weeks from your application submission date. Award of financial aid notification is by mail and begins in the month of July.

Information submitted on the financial aid form determines your eligibility for grants, scholarships, work study and low-interest loans. Students should plan to use personal resources to buy books and supplies prior to their first financial aid disbursement.

Roxanne Immel Legal Office Assistant A Legal Challenge The youngest of five, Roxanne Immel knows about challenge. Her first challenge came at age 7, when she was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes following a three-day coma and a week-long stay in the hospital. “Type 2 runs in both sides of my family; nobody has type 1,” says Roxanne. “I believe we all have something that we are consistently challenged with and diabetes just happens to be mine.” Growing up in a blended family in Renton, she knew her parents weren’t going to entirely fund her education. So when she graduated from high school in 2001 and enrolled in college, she wasn’t expecting much financial assistance from her parents. This represented another challenge. Thankfully, her parents agreed to pay for a portion of her tuition. “I continued to work part time to fund my education,” she recalls. “I really enjoyed [college] and was progressing well, but due to personal circumstances and limited finances, I withdrew.” The challenge was the requirement to list her stepfather’s and mother’s income, even though they weren’t fully funding her education. “It hindered the amount of financial aid I could receive. It was a frustrating situation.” Roxanne knows she’s not alone in her frustration. “Many students trying to obtain a college degree face the same challenge.” In 2005, Roxanne and her family moved to Auburn. She spent six months at home, off of work to recover from surgery because of a wrist injury she sustained earlier in the year. “Six months of not working leaves a lot of time for reflection,” she says. “I was the last child at home, I was 22 years old, in a job I didn’t like, with no career and no direction.” Then, her aunt gave her a valuable piece of advice.

“A career isn’t always about doing what you love. Find a career that you are good at, and that you like,” said the aunt. This wisdom propelled Roxanne into her current career. In the summer of 2005, she enrolled in the Legal Office Assistant program at the recommendation of a friend. “The legal field has always intrigued me and the attributes needed for the program were what came naturally to me,” says Roxanne. She began the program that fall, and continued to work approximately 20-30 hours a week. “On days I attended both school and work, I drove over 100 miles, and my days were more than 17 hours long,” says Roxanne. Given her past struggles with financing her education, she made it a priority to apply for as many scholarships through the Bates Foundation as possible. Instructor Karin Kelley encouraged her to apply and helped proofread her work each quarter before she submitted the application. “Karin’s compassion while I attended Bates was instrumental in obtaining my degree,” Roxanne says. She estimates scholarships funded about 51 percent of her education. “Each month I pay my student loan, I remember, and am grateful—the amount I am paying off could have been a lot larger if it weren’t for the Foundation.” Even though her biological parents have always had solid employment, they don’t have college degrees, and, she says, she was hungry to earn one. So as the Foundation announced scholarships each quarter, she applied. “If it wasn’t for the generosity of the donations people gave to the Foundation, I don’t know if I would have finished my program,” says Roxanne. “Each time I was awarded a scholarship, it was another person telling me that they believed in me and wanted me to succeed. All-Washington Academic Team Bates All-Washington Academic Team nominees Justyna Nowak and Tia Sundberg were selected because of their service and commitment to the communities in which they live and to honor their academic achievements. Sammamish resident Justyna learned of dental lab technology from a family friend. After a job change, she decided to pursue a degree in the field. Justyna, who travels 100 miles a day to attend classes, earned a bachelor’s degree in computer science in 2002, but her dream was to land a job where she could use her creativity and information technology skills. For her, the Dental Lab Technician program fit the bill. She is on track to graduate this summer. Before coming to Bates, Tia worked in retail for 17 years. Seeking a change, the Spanaway resident enrolled in the Administrative Office Assistant program. Tia’s newly-acquired expertise helped her land a job as an office manager at a landscaping company, where she uses her skills to help the business run more smoothly. The mother of three will graduate this spring, and she credits online courses with helping her finish the two-year program in just one year. As members of the All-Washington Academic Team, both Nowak and Sundberg will receive a $250 scholarship sponsored by KeyBank and the opportunity to receive other scholarship awards. In addition, nearly every Washington state public and private fouryear college offers scholarships to the All-Washington team members.

Jeff Hannem Marketing and Business Management Connecting People to People After a job change in 2002, Jeff Hannem decided he needed job skills. So he enrolled in Bates’ marketing and sales program. “It was a huge transition for me,” says Jeff, who confesses he didn’t know how to use a computer. “I have dyslexia and ADHD, and Bates gave me a lot of support.” Jeff admits it was tough going back to school. Now in his eighth year as a real estate agent with Keller Williams, he made a successful transition. “It is hard to succeed in a field where 90 percent of people fail in the first two years,” says Jeff. “But this experience has taught me not to give up.” Jeff works tirelessly to help people find a home. “What I do best in life is to connect people to people, and help people set and achieve goals. I’m a cross between a cheerleader and a coach,” he says. And this is why his son enrolled at Bates following high school. “I supported my son’s transition to college, and I helped mentor and coach him through his program.” Jeff credits his instructor Kathy Brock and his son’s instructor Emmett Peterson with their success. “We were given the gift of education and mentorship from Kathy and Emmett,” he says. Mathew Landers Information Technology Specialist Troubleshooting Success Mathew Landers has two passions in life: computers and writing. When he graduated from high school in 2009, he decided to pursue computers because there were more opportunities for gainful employment. “I chose Bates because my dad is a graduate of the Marketing and Business Management course, and I was familiar with the area,” says Mathew. He and his father met with Information Technology instructor Emmett Peterson and soon, Mathew was a student. “Emmett pushed me from the beginning to keep going and obtain my certification,” says Mathew. “The certifications aren’t part of the curriculum, but they help you out in the information technology world.” Mathew graduated in February and has already found employment. “Because of a class assignment, I networked with people who needed an information technology person, and now I have a job with St. Clare Hospital in the Allergy and Asthma specialty center,” he says. Mathew’s father was a driving force for his success. Along with Emmett, he helped support, inspire and coach Mathew over the past two years. “Bates gave me the opportunity to learn in a collaborative environment,” says Mathew. “And I’m thankful to have earned a degree and landed a job in the industry.” You can read the story of his father, Jeff Hannem, on page 12.

Train to get your Home Inspectors License with part-time evening classes! Enhance your skills with Bates Technical College’s part-time evening Certificate of Training in Home Inspection Fundamentals. Several classes are now offered each quarter and our evening class times are designed for the working adult. There are no prerequisites so take one course or all five! Washington State Department of Licensing requires all home inspectors to have 120 hours of classroom training provided and 40 hours of in-the-field training (not provided by Bates). There are five classes that make up a Certificate of Training in Home Inspection Fundamentals. Upon completion of our series, students will receive a certificate of training and will be eligible to test for the Washington state Home Inspectors License. Bates offers three to four classes each quarter, and students can complete the program in just two quarters. The classes that make up the complete certificate are: Communications and Professional Practices; Structures, Exteriors and Roofing; Plumbing and Electrical; Heating, AC and Heat Pumps; and Interiors, Insulation and Ventilation. Tuition is $600. “Within the next ten years the telecommunications world will need millions of qualified and certified fiber optics and datacom technicians to support billions of people and business connected via the Internet,” says instructor Jim Underwood. Judie Ross, Early Childhood Education/Child Care A Starting Point Judie Ross learned of Bates when her husband enrolled in the accounting program in the ‘70s. Since then, she’s been involved with the college. When she began her home day care, she enlisted Home and Family Life instructors to help develop curriculum. She began taking classes to secure her Early Childhood Education/Child Care (ECE) certificate. Now, Judie owns Alphabet Preschool. “Bates is a jumping off point. You can start here and move on up,” she says. “That’s what Bates is all about. It’s a way to get started, to fly even higher,” says Judie, who has since earned her associate’s of technology degree. Judie and her husband aren’t the only family members who have enrolled at Bates. In 1991, her son enrolled in the nursing assistant course and eventually the Practical Nurse program. Her daughters and daughters-in-law who work at the preschool each received their ECE certificates and associate’s of technology through the college. “All of the preschool’s program directors received their associate’s of technology at Bates,” says Judie. “And each of our employees have either received their education, or are in the process of earning their certificates or degrees at Bates.” Judie loves how easy it is for her employees to pursue an education. “They work in the morning, attend classes in the afternoon, then finish their day working at the preschool,” she says. “The program is excellent for working people. It’s just awesome!” Currently, Judie serves as an advisory committee member to the ECE program. “I consider it the highest honor to be able to give back by serving on the committee,” she says. “It’s like ice cream on a piece of pie!”

Join other families for fun, socialization and information-sharing in a safe, supervised environment for children 0-30 months. We welcome one or both parents to participate. Children and parents interact together for supervised activities including music and movement. Learn about research-based early learning techniques from a parent educator and discuss common parenting concerns with a special focus on the brain. Fees are $85 for an eight-week session.
